Census Can the federal census be helpful in determining the county of origin in Ireland? Indirectly. It can definitely give you the tools to find more records. The federal census asks for country of birth. Well, we know its Ireland. But it also gives the year of immigration, number of years the person has been in the US and in the case of a naturalized individual, the year of naturalization. (I'll go into naturalization records in detail in a later post.) However, the 1925 New York State Census can be even more helpful. This census specifically asks naturalized individuals for, not only the year of naturalization, but where! From the census pages I've viewed, the name of the court is usually given, ie: Kings County Court, Brooklyn City Court, etc. The 1925 NY State Census is *not* surname indexed. In order to properly search the schedules, you will need to obtain the Assembly and Election Districts. This is usually done by obtaining an address, then checking the ad & ed maps. If you are unable to determine an address but know your ancestors lived in a specific neighborhood during this period, you can locate the Assembly District for the neighborhood and search the schedules page by page. There is one big drawback to any census: it is only as accurate as the person giving and/or recording the information. In other words, you will find lots of discrepancies in the censuses for one family. It's best to use the census information as a guide. I have a copy of the 1925 Kings County (Brooklyn) Assembly District map. I would be very happy to search an address! I only ask one thing - if possible, please try to give a house number with the address. Many streets ran through more than one Assembly District. This map does *not* break down into Election Districts. Take care, Tracy
