Edward COSTELLO b. 1838 in Ireland, who emigrated 1853 to New York City, and Margaret RAFTREE/RAFTERY, b. 1841 in Timacat, Kilkerrin, County Galway, Ireland, who emigrated 1855 to New York City, married at Nativity Church, New York City, June 1861. They had nine children, six of whom survived to 1899: 1)-- Eliza COSTELLO who married (at St. Columba or Guardian Angels) John STEDMAN, a longshoreman. They lived in the area of 10th Ave. & 26th St. in Chelsea. By 1900 Federal Census they had Lizzie STEDMAN (1890), John STEDMAN (1892), Joseph STEDMAN (1896) and one other survivor of a total of 10 childbirths. 2)-- Catherine "Kate" COSTELLO who did not marry and remained at home to help her parents raise her 10 orphaned nieces and nephews. 3)-- Mary COSTELLO who married Felix KIRK ca. 1887. Felix KIRK died in 1898 and Mary COSTELLO KIRK died in 1899. They left five children: William KIRK (1888); Edward KIRK (1892); Charles KIRK (1894); Felix KIRK (1896); and Hazel KIRK (1899). 3)-- William COSTELLO who married Bridget "Delia" LYNCH in 1895 and lived on West 26th St. in Chelsea until Delia died in 1909. Then he moved to Hoboken, NJ, to be near his family who had moved to Weehawken, NJ earlier. William and Delia had Della COSTELLO (1896) who married Andrew "Hi" DOUGHERTY; Hazel COSTELLO who died in the Convent in the 1918 flu epidemic; Mildred COSTELLO who married Joseph Patrick CORCORAN in Hoboken in 1919; Edward COSTELLO who married Barbara Anne GANSBERG in 1929 in Ridgefield, NJ; and Martin COSTELLO who married Margaret DUMONT in Cliffside Park, NJ, in 1939. 4)-- Matilda COSTELLO who married William Patrick VERDON in 1895 in Weehawken, NJ, and thereafter lived in Hoboken, NJ. Their surviving children included William VERDON, Dr. Robert VERDON, Dr. Alfred VERDON, Frederick VERDON, Dr. Franklyn VERDON, Kathryn "Kitty" VERDON and Jane VERDON. 5)-- Edward COSTELLO who married Anna LINDSAY in 1913 in Hoboken, NJ.
