My husband's great-grandfather was Patrick McDONALD, born 19 Nov 1841 in County Cavan and died 1 Nov 1918, buried in St. John's Cemetery in Queens. Before his marriage, he was a bartender for a Patrick KENNAN in Manhattan and lived on East 7th Street. According to family lore, he immigrated first to Canada and then to NYC. Patrick McDONALD's siblings were John, born abt 1839 in County Cavan, later a member of the NYPD; Frank, born about 1843; Bridget, born about 1845, married LEWIS; and Rose, born about 1847, married LAWLOR. Patrick McDONALD married Ann Catherine LEDDY on 14 Jun 1885. He and wife Ann later lived in Richmond Hill, Queens. She was born 8 Mar 1854 on a farm in Ridgewood, Queens, and died 9 Sep 1935. Their children were: Francis Joseph [my husband's grandfather] born 7 Jul 1886 and died about 1935 [more below]; Thomas Patrick born 2 Jul 1889, died 31 May 1915; Mary Elizabeth, born 2 Jul 1889 and died in her 90s; Catherine/Kathryn Anne born 27 Dec 1890 and died 22 Jun 1952; and Anne/Anna Marie born 6 Jun 1893 and died 1975. Ann Catherine LEDDY's parents were Patrick LEDDY and Catherine/Catrine McCARTHY. Patrick was born 17 Mar 1822 in County Cavan, died 19 Oct 1894 in a road accident on Metropolitan Avenue [family rumor says it was 'no accident']. He immigrated about 1845 and worked on a farm in what is now Flushing, Queens (Union Tpke and Vleigh Rd). His wife Catherine worked on the same farm. Catherine McCARTHY was born 16 Dec 1821 in County Kerry and died 14 Dec 1906. They were married 8 Feb 1852 at St. Peter's Church on Barclay St., NYC. The couple later bought the farm where they worked and did quite well selling butter to the govt during the Civil War. Their children were Ann Catherine [above], Daniel born 2 Mar 1856 and died 29 Feb 1940; and Thomas Patrick born 8 Sep1858 and died 15 Mar 1925. Catherine McCARTHY had a brother John and a sister Mary. John was born about 1815 in County Kerry and immigrated before the girls. He died 12 Jun 1882. Mary died Jun 1916 in NYC. Francis Joseph McDONALD [above] married Ruth O'MEARA, born about 1890 and died 1963. She was the daughter of Thomas O'MEARA and Adella/Della HIGGINS. Thomas worked at Masterson's blacksmith shop in Brooklyn. Della was from Waterford, Ireland, immigrated about 1860, and her father's name may have been Edward. Her father was allegedly a close friend of the author William Makepeace Thackeray, and there may be some military connection to India.
