    3. Start with e-mailing archives@newyork.nara.gov Tell them everything you know about him, as briefly as poss. Since you have the all-important date, you'll probably get *copies* of the original documents in the mail within a few weeks, with a letter and a bill for research services. I did that, had the date too, and got the copies I wanted with an invoice for $10. which I was happy to pay. I never expected it to be so easy! However, the date of my relative's natz was in 1900. I don't know if you'll have the same response. I found out the one thing I was longing to know: where in Ireland he came from! I e-mailed for info on another relative on whom I had very little info,- just approx dates. They sent me back copies of the index cards (forget what they're called) of several indiv. with that name, and a letter saying if any of them looked like mine and I wanted copies of the full file, to contact them. So thought you might be happy to find this out! Good luck!
