Don, I don't know what happened to that wonderful database at Ancestry.com! Does anyone else know? Nancy Coleman, do you know? I see something that comes up on AOL "members only" on a Google search .... and I wonder if that's where I found it. About two years ago, when I would have been searching Emigrant Bank Records, I used an AOL free trial for a bit. I know I went back to it several times over a period of weeks or months, as they added new records .... and there was comment about the woman who was compiling it, etc., probably on the regular NYC list at rootsweb. I know it was before October 2000, because I was still hunting for my grandmother when I was searching there .... and I found her in October 2000! I can't think where else it could have been besides Ancestry ..... but it surely doesn't seem to be there now. It even contained the private little personal notes from the "remarks" that the bank employees added on accounts, such things as "has mother in Galway town" and such. There is a book containing an index of depositors from 1950-1953, that one can order from the compiler. That shows up on a Google search. Dear Maureen: The Emigrant Savings Bank database is a part of the GenExchange which is currently down for repairs (some reprogramming, servers moved, providers changed, etc.). We are in the final stages of testing and reconfiguring everything and hope to have it back online soon. The GenExchange is independently operated and owned and has no affiliation whatsoever with Ancestry.com or RootsWeb. It is a completely free database website. I will make an announcement as soon as we are back. Keep in mind that even this database is but a fraction of what is included in the entire record group of the ESB records. To date I believe there are somewhere in the neighborhood of 4500 records. That is a drop in the bucket and if you find someone there, you've lucked out. It's a work in progress. So, if you DON'T find your ancestor listed it does not mean they did not have an account. You should check the original microfilms. Best regards. Nancy. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Maureen" <maureen1024@yahoo.com> To: <IRISH-NEW-YORK-CITY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 02, 2002 1:57 AM Subject: [IRISH-NYC] Emigrant Savings Bank > > Don, I don't know what happened to that wonderful database > at Ancestry.com!
