How exactly did you request this interment list from Calvary? Can you request by phone or does it have to be by snail mail and what does this cost please? Thanks in advance... The price?!? I think it is an exorbitant price, whatever it is. I remember way back when I was asked if I wanted to know how many people were buried. The staff member not only told me how many, but he gave me the dates of the interred.... I was able to find some of those buried there ( same last name)...but eventually, I purchased the list. Because some staff member had to go hunting "in another book" and have it typewritten, there was a charge. Over 30 bucks...... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Fran MIller" <ancabhan@taconic.net> To: <IRISH-NEW-YORK-CITY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 03, 2002 9:13 PM Subject: Re: [IRISH-NYC] Calvary Cemetery > How exactly did you request this interment list from Calvary? When you think of all the burials that have taken place in Calvary...what is it ...a million or two...and how many record books they must have, I have to disagree with you and say the cost for a transcript is pretty darn cheap. Look what we pay the Government for records. Elizabeth V. Cardinal EVC1369@comcast.net evcardinal@yahoo.com www.geocities.com/evcardinal/
Those days are long gone. :) When they used to do that they maybe received a few requests a month. Now they most likely receive hundreds in a month (given the number of times this question is raised on this list alone, that's probably a low estimate). With over three million burials, and the overwhelming increase in the popularity of genealogy, Calvary is quite busy handling genealogical requests now (not to mention handling current day funerals). The charges are there to offset the cost of the manpower, paper, postage, etc., to do the searches. They are a business. They have to pay their employees. The current price (and it's been this for quite some time with no increase) is $20 for the first name (in the plot) and $2 for every person after that. Quite reasonable by ANY standard. Considering the information you can get, it's a bargain. Obtaining real genealogical documents and conducting real (not online) genealogy at archives is not usually completely free. Everything cost something, even if it's just the copy machine. :) I think, as genealogists, we all have to keep in mind that what may be a hobby for some may be a business to the people who have the records. Take the Municipal Archives for instance. They are a city agency. But, they have to support themselves and run the department like a business OR they would be quickly shut down (if they had to rely soley on the city budget/tax revenues). So, they charge $5 for usage of a reader (which goes to pay for the bulbs and maintenance of the machine and the purchase of new equipment, probably also a share goes towards the cost of the microfilm itself) and $5 for each certified certificate or $10 for an index search and certificate (which goes to pay the cost of the labor/employee involved, the paper, the machine they use, the microfilm, the printing costs for the envelope, the postage, etc.). They have a charge for everything that COSTS THEM. They try to be self supporting. And, it's a good thing they do or we wouldn't have them (to kick :)) around. The city budget (deficit) wouldn't allow it. Genealogy Economics 101 :) Best regards. Call the Cemetery and ask them to look up the number of people in the plot. They will tell you the amount. Then mail them a check with the plot address. You do send snail mail to Calvary including all the pertinent date. Do not bother if you do not have either a date of death, a date of burial or the plot number. There records are not alphabetized. Calvary will send then send you a letter telling you they have found the records and quote you an exact price for the transcript. You like most of us, will also get a bill for perpetual care. It is rare (I think) when anyone pays it these days for the fees are high. Elizabeth V. Cardinal EVC1369@comcast.net evcardinal@yahoo.com www.geocities.com/evcardinal/
Thank you Elizabeth for your speedy response. I have an idea that in addition to my Grandmother and Grandfather, I may find our long lost cousins who died in the flu epidemic of the early 20's. I 'm sending for the interement list right now. Thanks again. Fran always searching for McCallion, especially those called Daniel. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elizabeth V. Is it possible just to make a tax deductible contribution of, say, $100 a year to the "Archdiocese of NY, Calvary Cemetery" if one cannot pay the $5,000 due? That would help them out somewhat, I think. Has anyone done anything like that? Maureen --- "Elizabeth V. <<Is it possible just to make a tax deductible contribution of, say, $100 a year to the "Archdiocese of NY, Calvary Cemetery" if one cannot pay the $5,000 due? >> I do not see why not. All contributions of that kind are deductible and you can earmark it for Calvary. You can also negotiate with Calvary. They m ight wave the old charges if you pay the current fee for Perpetual care. I did that in one instance. Elizabeth V. Cardinal EVC1369@comcast.net evcardinal@yahoo.com www.geocities.com/evcardinal/
