Clan na Gael and the Fenian Brotherhood (US branch).  Deeds committed by one are attributed to the other.  The two organizations coexisted for some time.  But there were some differences. Clan na Gael was the largest organization dedicated to Irish freedom.  It was founded and operated in the United States.  They were an open society.  Their mission and deeds were published regularly in Irish-American newspapers.  They were adept at fundraising and operated closely with high-level compatriots in Ireland.  Clan na Gael operated under one charismatic head - John Devoy.  It was the death of Devoy and the realization of an Irish Free State that led to the end of the organization. The Fenian Brotherhood was founded in Ireland and brought to the US.  They were a secret society.  They were somewhat disorganized and not as successful in their actions, i.e., the invasion of Canada, even when they had the backing of the US government.  The Fenians had several different leaders, none very distinguishable.  The organization suffered from years of infighting due to lack of direction.  Many members would 'jump ship' to Clan na Gael.  When the Easter Rebellion came about, the Fenian Brotherhood was on its last legs. Many people were members of both organizations.  Maybe your ancestor started with the Fenians and left to join Clan na Gael.  Or maybe he was loyal to both.  They were two unique organizations with one shared vision.
