Just now got the message about John Ridge's tour of lower Manhattan and even if I weren't in Michigan, visiting our daughter and her family, I still couldn't have made it since home these days is LA and, oh yeah, it's Dec. 5, four days after the event. For all that, I would have loved to join the stroll. Not all Irish who emigrated to NYC were Catholic. My GM, as Irish as they come, was Catholic but my GF was Scots-Irish Presbyterian. My understanding is that more than a few of our forebears were Protestants and is there anyone there in Mr. Ridge's organization who might be able to help those of us descended from, gasp!, mixed marriages, to trace their ancestry? Best regards and Happy Holidays, George Alexander
City Hall Area Walking Tour A tour of historic sites within walking distance of City Hall on Saturday, December 1, presented by the New York Irish History Roundtable, will be led principally by John Ridge, our Vice President for Local History. Occasional contributions will be offered by Charles Laverty, President. Among the places to be visited are 165 William Street, where John Devoy published the weekly Gaelic American from 1903 until his death in 1928 and where he led the nationwide Irish Republican Brotherhood/Clan na Gael conspiracy and funding that culminated in the Easter Rising in Dublin, 1916. Directly across the street at 164 William Street is the William H. Sadlier, Inc. publishing house, famous for its early novels, general books, and textbooks for Catholic readers. The firm is still in business after 170 years. It became known in its early years for bestsellers by the immigrant from Cavan, Mary Anne Madden Sadlier, who produced a phenomenal sixty titles addressing issues of domestic servants, immigration, famine, historical romances, Western pioneers, and grammar-school catechisms. Other historic places to be visited are St. Peter's at Church and Barclay streets, New York's oldest Catholic church, and the nearby St. Paul's Episcopal Chapel on Vesey Street and Broadway. Here we'll view the Gaelic inscription on the William J. MacNeven monument executed by a member of the Gaelic-speaking Draddy family of sculptors from Kerry. Also here on Broadway was Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa's first New York business, a travel agency on Broadway at Murray Street. On Chambers Street, on the same block as the Emigrant Savings Bank, was the Draft Office commanded briefly by County Down-born Colonel Robert Nugent of the Irish Brigade before the outbreak of the 1863 Draft Riots. Nugent's home was pillaged and burned by the mob during the riots. Also on Chambers Street was the office of the Irish-language weekly newspaper The Gael and the office of the lawyer-historian Michael Doheny from Tipperary, an escapee from the failed 1848 rising. By 1851, Doheny would organize a New York militia unit, the 69th Infantry, and later, on St. Patrick's Day, 1858, the Fenian Brotherhood at his office just north of Foley Square at 6 Centre Street. The assembly point for this walking tour of about two hours (rain or shine) will be at the City Hall Guard's Booth on the east side of Broadway, opposite Murray Street, Saturday, December 1, at 2 p.m. The tour requires two hours of walking on sidewalks.

According to the NYC municipal archives website, these two types of records are available on microfilm. Has anyone ever accessed any of these records, either in person or by mail? Thank you to the people who answered me about the question below. I still struggling to find any information about her, as I said before I am very limited in my resources. Could somebody please give me some advice on shipping lists, as I have tried www.findmypast.com here in the uk but the list dates seem to be too late. Again any advice would be gratefully recieved Debbi -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi, I am trying to find some information about my x2 great grandfather's sister and try to figure out why it came that she moved to the USA from England, as far as I can tell, with the information I have, on here own. Her name was Mary Ellen Eaton (Father: John Eaton, Mother: Bridget Eaton nee Corrigan). She was born c1856 in Ireland but lived mostly in Manchester, England with her parents (I found them in the 1861 census). I have been unable, with my very limited resources, to find her on a shipping list to see who she may have travelled with. When in the USA she married a Timothy James Sullivan (Born: Massachusetts. Father: Jeremiah Sullivan, Mother: Elizabeth Lovett, both his parents were Irish) at Nativity Church, on the 10th Nov 1878, Manhatten, New York, New York. I have also found them on the 1880 United States census on West 49th Street, Manhatten, New York. This is the only information/records I have been able to find on her and I would be extremely grateful for any help or advice anybody could give me, as I would love to know some more information/records about her and how she came to live in the US, but I have never researched any family history in the US before. Have you tried www.castlegarden.org yet? If she entered the US through New York prior to 1892, then she would have gone through the Castle Garden immigration center. This website is free and allows you to search by name and years. You can also research, be certain of the certificates for your family, and then order through LDS for $2.00. That was my plan when I visited the Archives but I ended up paying for most of the copies through them. Municipal Archives actually only charged $6.00/copy in September when ordering in person (less than what their website says) but they are $10 + shipping when ordered online. The microfilm readers are first come first serve, but there was plenty of room when I was there. Going early is best. Maureen, Sorry, but like so many other things, the price has gone up. Certs are now $10, per the Muni Archives site. Genie Last time I was there, it's $5.00 to search for the day. Certificates, which you can see before you buy, were $5.00 each. Still a bargain. The staff is very helpful.
