Thank you for the info, Michelle and Kevin. While I've been researching for over thirty years including NYC, I always find something new with these postings. I did not know about the info with the Poor houses nor about Footnote.com. Thanks again. Nora Hopkins FitzGerald Hopkins - Castlebar, Co. Mayo/New York City Grant - Drumboniff, Co. I try to start with death records because you have an event in time that will be recorded at the municipal archive, the cemetery and the funeral home. There might be an obituary or a memorial card to start with as well. Everyone dies. The obituary might list relatives both living and deceased along with birth and marriage dates and major events. The cemetery provides a possible connection to other dead people. People are buried in groups generally and one would not expect to have a John Brown in a plot unless he is related or connected somehow. Calvary in particular has been helpful in my search. Knowing who purchased the grave and when is a big help. Death certificates are great but often can be incorrect. Be careful not to be a literalist because if a mistake is made in names of ancestors it is most likely to be on the death certificate. Don't dismiss it but look to verify it. My ancestor was the last of the immigrant siblings to immigrate. His death certificate said his parents were Michael Cassidy and Mary Rabey. His spinster sister died three months earlier and hers said Michael Cassidy and Mary Ravey. The middle brother died in 1908 and his said John Cassidy and Mary Ravey. The youngest brother died in 1905 and it said Michael Cassidy and Mary Reavey(might be Rooney). The records in Newry, County Down verified Michael Cassidy and Mary Reavey as the parents' names. Using four records can correct discrepancies. My next big record is the census both federal and state/local. A person may not show up every census but they usually show up enough to provide a detailed picture of age and family structure. It also helps along with city directories to know where they lived and what parish they might have attended. Surprise family members in the census can be key. Next is using the IGI at Family Search. Doing a parent search for both North America/NY and British Isles/Ireland has provided extra dates and addresses for ancestors and collaterals. Check the Italian Genealogical Group site at italiangen.org These NYC vital records indexes are most helpful tracking people that pop up unexpectedly in a census or other record. This fleshes out the tree and expedites the tree. They have other records there as well. Church records are a last resort. Often challenging to obtain but sometimes worth the wait and expense. Sponsors and witnesses are key. Nice for completion to have full dates. Make sure to ask for full notations and send a SASE and a donation. They will let you know if it was not enough. Some will send info along and mention that your donation was short. Please send in the difference to maintain goodwill for you and the rest of us. Poor house records gave detailed information. I am still trying to find a gentleman entering the poor house. If I can see his card it will verify his parents' names and give the name of his closest kin at that date. This will verify who was his kid and when they were last known to be living. Online databases can be helpful too. Footnote.com has many Naturalization records online and you can search for ones where your ancestor was not only the new citizen but the witness sometimes telling you the address. Use birth dates to track relatives that died in the Social Security Death index. I found my grandmother's cousin because I knew her birth date from the church records. There was a burial in the family grave in 1984. I put in birth date and a death in 1984 and 17 names were pulled. The last one was a name that was her. With a death date one can get an obituary searched in the locality and sent over the e-mail sometimes. Then one can contact living members possibly and try to compare notes. **************Start the year off right. Hi, If you mean the actual book, no I have not seen it. I could kick myself because I did have the opportunity to look at the original book while at the parish house in Parke in 2003. I have reviewed the entry by using the LDS microfilm. There was no additional info in the margins. This was in Parke Turlough Civil Parish County Mayo. Are you saying there would be a record (if there is one) in the Diocesan office in Tuam, Co. Mayo (where the diocesan office would be located)? The marriage took place in 1892. Thanks. I may check that out or have my Irish cousins check that out. Nora PS Colleen is not my name just part of my e-mail address In a message dated 1/10/2008 10:45:04 P.M. If they handle the testing anything like they handled my order for Christmas toys and games for my far-away grandchildren, all I can say is WATCH OUT! I called them to correct various shipping errors between 20-25 times after placing the order the first week of November, and they still haven't gotten two items to the right address ..... along with many items multiple times to wrong addresses! I did the DNA testing not to find new connections but to see if it could be determined how close the cousin relationship was between my paternal grandparents (same surname and lived on adjacent townlands in Mayo). My cousin's paternal grandfather was my paternal grandmother's brother. Knowing that my grandparents were cousins (no dispensation noted in church marriage record) I was hoping that DNA testing would help. Out of the 79 markers, my brother and male cousin matched 77 markers. This does show a fairly close relationship but nothing to tell me the actual degree. However, you can have a difference in markers between a father and son or a paternal grandfather and grandson depending whether the marker is a fast changer. My paternal DNA is R1b1c and mtDNA is H1b. These were the most common haplogroups that over wintered in the Iberian Peninsula during the Ice Age over 4,000 years ago. Once the ice retreated these people moved onto England and Ireland. I told my husband (E3b) that my family was on Ireland's shores over 3,000 years before his family (FitzGerald) showed up (about 12th century AD). I just find it interesting. Colleen, Have you seen the actual register? There may be a notation that they missed it or chose to ignore it when they issued a certificate. Also check with the diocesan office. Dispensations were/are granted by the bishop. They should have a record there. I know I have a copy of my ancestors' dispensation from the bishop in 1929. This was a family record I did not get it from the chancery. They were related in the third degree. They were second cousins. Their parents the first cousins were born on adjacent townlands in County Cork. Hi Genie, I think the National Geographic program is research, much like the Sorenson program. I took the Y test a couple of months back. I really don't have any interest in the mt test. My Irish ancestors arrived here during the famine and I've been unable to locate any until the 1870 census, and those were my gg grandparents. So, I took the test in hopes of eventualy connecting with other descendants of their siblings and also to try and pinpoint a location in Ireland where the family came from. I did have a relatively close match with someone...a reasonably good chance that we are connected 10-15 generations back...surprisingly, it was the brother-in-law of a subscriber to this list.!! The one who actually suggested I get the test. I guess the DNA thing is just another fad until it works for you. Frank, what do you think of the DNA test National Geographic is offering? A few of my friends who do genealogical research only over the computer take the test results as gospel. Hi, I paid to get mtDNA done because I wanted to find out about my mothers lineage. She was second generation American. Her grandparents were from Ireland. There are over 4,000 matches and none that have the surnames I am searching, Penny, Donnelly and Condron. There are all kinds of nationalities on that list of over 4,000 matches...Mexican, Polish, German, Russian, just to name a few...but few Irish...I paid over $300 for this and still have no matches... If you want to help the research get it done, it is free. Rhoda **************Start the year off right. Frank, What's the point of getting this done? I thought Sorenson Labs was changing its methods but it says you don't get results. Yes, I do have mine. Nora Hopkins FitzGerald Hopkins - Castlebar, Co. But you don't get results back from this test. It is just for their research. **************Start the year off right. Easy ways to stay in shape. http://body.aol.com/fitness/winter-exercise?NCID=aolcmp00300000002489
