    1. [IRISH-NYC] Irish-Language Mass at St. Patrick's Old Cathedral
    2. Jim Garrity
    3. Irish-Language Mass at St. Patrick's Old Cathedral Come celebrate the Feast of St. Patrick! In honor of St. Patrick, an Irish- and English-language Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Old Cathedral on Mott Street in Manhattan, between Prince and Houston streets, on Friday, March 14th, at 1:00 p.m. Father Andrew M. O'Connor of Holy Family Church in the Bronx will celebrate the Mass, with Msgr. Donald Sakano, pastor of the Old Cathedral, as a concelebrant. Readings will be done in English by Father O'Connor and in Irish by Padraig O'Cearuill, Language Lecturer of Irish Studies, NYU. The Washington Square Harp and Shamrock Orchestra, led by Mick Moloney, Global Distinguished Professor of Irish Studies and Music, NYU, will perform liturgical music, along with Irish-language vocalist Dawn Doherty. Charles Currin will play the beautiful and historic 1868 Henry Erben pipe organ. More information and photographs of this organ are online at http://www.jaredlamenzo.com/erbenrenewal. After the Mass, a party celebrating the Feast of St. Patrick will be held in front of the church, with traditional Irish music and refreshments. The Old Cathedral was the seat of the Diocese (and then the Archdiocese) of New York from 1815 to 1879. The architect for this Gothic building was Joseph-François Mangin, who also designed Manhattan's City Hall. Thank you, Jim Garrity jimgarrity@gmail.com

    1. [IRISH-NYC] FREWENs of Coolreiry, Castleconnell
    2. Brian M. Carr
    3. Hi Folks, To answer George Kelly's query about St. Joseph Catholic Church, Castleconnell, Father Minogue in 1999 told me that there was a fire that consumed the parish records prior to 1850. Therefore, I could not find the baptism record of my great-grandfather John Browne FREWEN who was born in 1841 nor that of his siblings born between his parents' marriage in 1838 in St. John's Cathedral, Limerick and 1850. This number could be as much as 5 or 6. The first entry in the parish records of Thomas and Margaret FREWEN's offsprings I could find was Patrick's baptism on St. Patrick's Day 1851. Pat's entry in 1851 is followed by: Elizabeth A. Frewen 27 July 1854 Margaret Frewen c.9 Sept. 1857 Stephen Frewen c.12 July 1860 Catherine L. Frewen 12 June 1864 Of these known children John was the first to emigrate in 1862. He ended up in Philadelphia where he was a stone polisher and a blacksmith. He was later joined by his brother Pat who partnered with him in the blacksmith venture. Elizabeth emigrated to New York City . More about her later. Catherine emigrated to Chicago where she married a Clare native and schoolmaster named (?) Mulbrandon. They had one son named Charles (b.1905). After an early widowhood she returned with her son back to the Coolreiry, Castleconnell dairy farm in the 1920ies. There is a story that Stephen was ordained a priest and joined a religious order whose motherhouse was to the south of Castleconnell, probably in Co. Cork. Elizabeth, known as "Aunt Lizzie" in the Philadelphia CARRs was my grandmother , Mary Aloysius (nee Frewen) CARR's aunt. She made it big when money was to be made (before income taxes). In the 1900s she owned a hairdressing business @ 529 Fifth Ave., cattycorner from the NYC Public Library's main location. She married a much younger dentist named (?) HUBBARD. I tried to look up his dentist license @ the Museum of Industry but failed to find it. She started a cosmetics business registered as HUBBARD'S GRECIAN CREAMS manufacturing cole cream... I am still looking for a jar of that. The HABBARDs purchased a mansion ??? (I haven't seen it ) on Summit Road, Port Washington, Nassau County , NY. In 1910 a Canadian named Florence Nightingale Graham started a partnership with Aunt Lizzie in the Fifth Ave., beauty salon. I believe the partnership was short lived with Florence hiring a sign painter to replace Aunt Lizzie's surname with the name ARDEN. Therefore our Aunt Lizzie is the Elizabeth in " ELIZABETH ARDEN " . Her final venture in life was the HUBBARD HOTEL CO. which owned and managed three hotels : The University Hotel (located in the 60s), a second of unknown name, and "The Wentworth", now known as the "Quality Inn Midtown" @ 59 W. 46th Street, NYC. Aunt Lizzie died 16 January 1923 and is buried in an unmarked grave with her brother, Pat, and sister-in-law, Mary, in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery , Glenside, (Phila.) PA. I would appreciate any help in locating Dr. Hubbard's professional license, the real estate records for the Summit Rd. residence, and their Catholic marriage records. Brian M. 1. [IRISH-NYC] Arrival in NYC
    2. Information Concerning Arrival in NYC: Before August 1855 the immigrants arrived at the wharves of New York City; >From August 1, 1855 through April 18, 1890, they arrived at Castle Garden, an island off Manhattan; >From April 19, 1890 through December 31, 1891, they arrived at the Barge Office; >From January 1, 1892 through June 13, 1897, they arrived at Ellis Island; >From June 14, 1897 through December 16, 1900, they arrived at the Barge Office; >From December 17, 1900 through 1924 they arrived at Ellis Island. It should be noted that ships never actually landed at Ellis Island -- they landed at Manhattan and the passengers were ferried over to the island for processing. Generally, only steerage passengers went to Ellis Island for inspection -- MOST of the first & second class passengers were allowed to leave the ship soon after docking. All passengers, however, were listed on the ship manifest (or passenger list). Dorothy **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. 3. Go to search NY and then all directories and then within that is a choice for city directory where various cities are listed in a sub file including Manhattan and, NYC and one other. The 1931(not 1930) directory is in one of them. It is an actual scanning of the typed pages. 1. [IRISH-NYC] Mailing Requests

    3. I was wondering what is the turn around for written replies on the list? I have sent several requests out over the last year by postal mail. The letters that go to governmental agencies all arrive without problems and I receive a reply in a timely manner. Most parish requests also arrive without problem and are replied to in a timely manner as well. I have had a few letters that have not reached the parish or that have been misplaced. I always send SASE along with private requests like churches but do not usually do so with the government offices. Is there something about a thicker envelope being sent to NYC that raises suspicion or clogs a mailing belt in the post office? I have had to cancel three checks and was is it the parish office, the post office or something else?

    3. Most of the LDS Family History Centers now have access to Heritage Quest. They also have access to WorldVitalRecords.com and the Godfrey Memorial Library. 3. You can see addresses on a map at www.mapquest.com ----- Original Message ----- From: Pauline Leonard To: IRISH-NEW-YORK-CITY@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, January 28, 2008 8:46 PM Subject: [IRISH-NYC] Heritage Quest ? Hi, I would like to thank you for this information. How do you get Heritage Quest? Is it only for libraries? I phoned our library and they don't even know what it is and they have a Genealogy department. Their Genealogy department was actually started by my best friend's Aunt but it is useless to me since it is all about Ontario and specifically Waterloo Region history. I was checking on-line and it seems that you cannot access Heritage Quest unless you are lucky enough to have your local library subscribe to it. Is this correct? I would appreciate it if you could send me a copy of the entry below for Hugh Leonards. I actually have 3 addresses for James Leonard. 1st his ship list in 1906 says he is going to his brother Johns at 3319 Third Ave, NY, NY In 1913 my grandfather, Hugh, says he is going to his brother James at 784 Amsterdam Ave, NY, NY In 1918, for the draft, James says he is living at 752 Columbia Ave, NY, NY. I don't have a map of NY so I don't really know where any of these adresses are. Regards Pauline ******************************************************************** This is from Heritage Quest. He is single and living as a boarder with a Thos. and Michl. Leonards. I know the names don't match but it is on the west side where James Leonard appeared to live in 1913 according to the ship manifest. 3. Pauline, Don't know where you are. If you are in the US, this site might help you find access. http://www.eogen.com/HeritageQuestOnline It explains what it is, what is has, and if you scroll down, you can see at least a good representation of which libraries have it. Sometimes, entire states can access through a certain link, as long as you have card. (or a couple of cases, a valid driver's license, I think). 3. My library has the access so here is what I extracted. 1920 US Census New York State New York County Manhattan New York City Supervisor's District 1 Enumeration District 446 Sheet 4B 8 Jan 1920 At 322 West 47th Street at the residence of Joseph McCullough Leonards, Hugh, Boarder, 35 years old, single, immigrated 1907(hard to read), Papers were filed for citizenship, reads, writes, born Ireland and speaks English same as both parents, motorman Street Rail Leonards, Thomas, 33 naturalized 1913 Leonards, Michael, 28, naturalized 1916 The year of arrival is very hard to make out for these three men. All three are listed as boarders. Third Avenue is on the east side of Manhattan near the East River, Amsterdam Avenue is on the west side near the Hudson River and Columbia Avenue is I believe on the west side but I am uncertain. The range of address in the 1920 would put them on west 47th between 8th and 9th avenues I think. Amsterdam exists only north of I think 59th street or so on the west side. Good luck, Kevin On Jan 28, 2008, at 8:46 PM, Pauline Leonard wrote: > Hi, > I would like to thank you for this information. How do you get > Heritage > Quest? Is it only for libraries?
