    1. Re: [IRISH-NYC] IA Deaths July 4, 1857
    2. The Irish-American was published in New York City. The news, marriage and death notices from Ireland were gathered by their staff from Irish newspapers and/or reporters they had in Ireland. (For example, the Irish-American had an office in Dublin.) So, would the families appearing in the announcements have had family in the US? Probably, due to the large influx of Famine immigrants. (Even if it was just a distant relative.) The names that appear in the Information Wanted column were for people who had 'disappeared' somewhere in the US or Canada. Take care, Tracy

    1. Re: [IRISH-NYC] IA Deaths July 4, 1857
    2. Was the Irish American newspaper published in New York or Ireland? If a death that took place in Ireland is published does that mean the individual had relatives in the U.S.?

    1. [IRISH-NYC] IA News NYC July 4, 1857
    2. Irish-American July 4, 1857 News in New York City Serious riots took place in New York and its vicinty, on Sunday last. In the 11th Ward on Sunday a gang of rowdies made an attack on Hook and Ladder Company No. 12. Capt. McKINNEY, of the 13th Ward, and nine of his policemen, happening to be in the neighborhood, interferred to quell the riot and succeeded in arresting the leader of the rowdies. His companions then attacked the police, rescued the prisoner, and inflicted desperate injuries on some of the officers. Capt. McKINNEY, it is feared, will not recover. Another fight took place at Hudson Park, between a number of Germans, who were on an excursion, and some rowdies who molested them. Several of the Germans were badly beaten, and a man named John McCARTHY, of the opposite party, was carried off the field insensible. In Williamsburgh a riot took place in First Street, near Grand, originating with a German who was beating his wife. A number of bystanders were drawn into the row, and Frank KELLY, James QUINN, and two others unknown were stabbed severely. A fireman's riot also took place at a fire in Water St., Brooklyn, between engine companies 5 and 7. 1. [IRISH-NYC] IA News July 4, 1857
    2. Irish-American July 4, 1857 News from Ireland Tyrone - On Tuesday, June the 9th, an Oliver WHITENSIDE, aged seventeen years, son of Mr. W. WHITENSIDE, a respectable farmer in Killycalpy, about two miles from Stewartstown, was on his way home from the turf bog, with a shovel on his shoulder, he was overtaken by a thunder storm, and was struck with the electric fluid, which deprived him of life on the spot. Mr. McGAUGHEY, of Omagh, has been declared contractor for building the new Convent there, his estimate being much below any of the others, 5,022 pounds. The personal property of the late Hon. and Rev. Charles DUGLAS, of Tyrone, has been proved under his will at 2,000 pounds. Galway - On the fair day of Galway, as a man named GILMORE, from Carabrowne, was proceeding towards home, he was attacked by the two men named FLEMMING, father and son, and very cruelly treated. When knocked down the younger FLEMMING stabbed him with a knife and then made off. The father and sister were arrested that evening, and committed to prison. GILMORE was removed to the county infirmary, where his wounds were dressed. Young FLEMMING was arrested soon after and lodged in jail. The two men and the girl have been admitted to bail. On the 6th of June, about eleven o'clock, a young man named CONNELL was driving a cart from Athenry to Tuam, and within a very short distance of his house, going along a small boreen, the cart and mule were upset into a deep rut or pit on the road side, and the deceased, being at the time asleep inside a box or crate which was fixed on the cart, was suffocated before any assistance reached him. He was only 22 years of age, and was the chief support of his aged parents. We have seen some splendid specimens of new potatoes grown in the open air, on the lands of Ardfey, the property of James BLAKE, Esq. The gardener is Thomas DONNELLAN. They are a fine specimen of the productiveness of the season. The speculations in exportation of potatoes from Ireland have completely failed. The prices in Dublin, Liverpool and London are lower than at home.

    2. Forwarded from strovink@frazmtn.com : Haven't seen a posting on this lately. Hope it isn't a repeat.  Found this fun site which has an 1820 Painting of Brooklyn depicting life in the village at that time. The picture takes a long time to load, 3-4 minutes on my slow computer but I found it was worth waiting for. The "game" link on the page, when it finally comes up, will identify the characters in the painting and explain their role in the community. This even gives their names. Thought those of you that are researching that time and this area might enjoy it. 1. [IRISH-NYC] IA News NYC June 20, 1857
    2. Irish-American June 20, 1857 News in New York City Joseph TAYLOR, Esq., Commissioner of Streets, died on the afternoon of the 9th inst., at his residence in this city, of consumption. A married woman named Eliza SHAW, residing in the 1st Avenue, near 22nd Street, was found on the morning of Sunday week, under the windows of her residence quite dead, and with her throat cut. An inquest was held by Coroner PERRY, and the jury brought in a verdict implicating her husband in her death; but the Coroner refused to receive it as it conflicted with the evidence. The jury then found that the deceased came to her death by her throat being cut by some persons unknown. A laborer named Patrick KEARNS, residing in York Street, fell from the roof of the new iron building, corner of Chambers and Church Streets, on the 9th inst., and was killed instantly. A fire took place early on the morning of the 9th inst., in 53rd Street, in a frame house occupied by Mr. James SHERWOOD (or SHEPHARD). The building was burned to the ground, and Mrs. SHERWOOD perished in the flames. The Brooklyn Common Council have appointed John BERRY, Esq., Counsellor to the Commissioner on Williamsburg claims, and Joseph J. MARRIN, clerk, fixing the salary of the former at $2,000 and the latter at $1,000 per year. A plasterer named KEYS, residing near the corner of Hoyt and Butler Streets, Brooklyn, has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his wife. The woman was found dead in the basement where they lived, her jaw broken, her body covered with blood and bruises, and presenting a horrifying spectacle. Wm. SHEHAN, a sailor, and native of Ireland, was stabbed on Tuesday night week in Cherry Street, by two negroes, and died in the City Hospital on Friday. The negroes have been committed to answer. Thomas DENINEY, charged with setting fire to his grocery store, in 2nd Avenue, last September, was tried in the Court of Sessions last week, found guilty of arson in the second degree, and sentenced to ten years imprisonment in the State Prison. He was ably defended by Richard BUSTEED, Esq. A resolution has been passed by the Brooklyn Board of Health directing the Health Wardens to visit all places where hogs are kept in the city; and where they have no permit, to drive them to the pound. In case of resistance, they are directed to arrest and commit the offending parties.

    3. Hi , This dividing among ED's can make the line right down a street so that the odd are in one ED and the even are in another. If the street is long as I had in my case, Bethune Street, then the street can be in more that two ED's. This would mean you have to view the "whole" film to catch the parts which will be through out the film, not one behind the other. Or on more than one film. If one has a specific address that still exist today, I plug it in the map programs available e.g. Maps on Yahoo, to see where the address is and the cross streets. Hope this helps. 2. Hi All: The purpose of these lists are to help each other in our mutual quest to find our roots. Here is a little something that I would like to share with you which came to me from another list. This tip might prove helpful in the event that we find ourselves in a similar situation while researching the upcoming 1930 census.   The subscriber was puzzled that the Enumeration District micro film for 150th St., showed only addresses ending in even numbers and not the odd ending number he was looking for. Several responses indicated that the 150th St. address he was looking for, may be the dividing line for two ED's. Even numbers were in one ED and odd numbers were in the other ED.  Suggestions were to look at the other ED film. I hope that this will be helpful. Take care and good hunting Jim McCarthy
