    2. Don McGovern
    3. Over the last several weeks I feel I have become quite a expert on the Emigrant Savings Bank Records. Probably learned a little more than I wanted to. But I wanted to share what I have learned with everyone so that may you won't have to go through the learning curve as I have. Availability of the records for research: If you live in the NYC area you should have no problem with finding the microfilm to research the records. The NYPL has the microfilm at its library on 5th Ave and 42nd street. If you live outside the NYC area there are 7 other choices for you in the US: Mormon FHL at Salt Lake City: The microfilm is restricted to the vault in SLC. It can not be sent out to the local FHC's. CO DENVER PUB LIBR FL BROWARD CNTY, LIBR DIV MA BOSTON PUB LIBR MA HARVARD UNIV, HARVARD COL LIBR TECH SERV MI LIBRARY OF MICHIGAN OH STATE LIBR OF OHIO I have checked with each of the libraries including the Mormon and NYPL and the microfilm at each library can not be sent out on Inter-Library Loan. Can be used only at their libraries. If you live in Oklahoma like myself, your just plum out of luck. One person on the email list had a good idea though. You might be able to purchase some of the microfilm through the NYPL for $25 per roll. If you go that route I suggest you purchase the index to the test deposit books. Two rolls I believe that cover from 1850 - 1866. Once you find the names and their corresponding account numbers, hire a researcher in NYC to make photocopies of the test deposit books for those you are wanting. Should end up costing a person alot less going that route. Don McGovern Oklahoma __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! 3. Hi Don...let me also add that the " microfilms - with the essential information - are available at the National Archives and the Huntington Historical Society..however, the NYPL has the entire set. If you are going to buy the set, I would say the ones with the names and other pertinent information would be worth purchasing. I beleive it is 4 through 10. Please correct me if I am wrong. 3. Charlie In that time frame the Irish lived all over the city. Yes, quite a few lived in the area of St. Agnes which is mid town and quite central to everything. It is possible the bride lived in that parish but the groom did not. They might have moved anywhere in the metropolitan NY area after the wedding. Elizabeth V. 2. Where would people who recently arrived from Ireland live in 1880s NYC? Was there a certain neighborhood where they gathered with other Irish? My gparents were married at St. Agnes on E 43rd in 1888. Would they have lived near there or just picked that church because it was the nearest one? How big an area did NYC cover at that time and were there a lot of RC churches in Manhattan? No luck with the 1880 census so far. Thanks, Charlie in RI

    3. Actually, it is a very common word used in print, both in annuls of history and in tombstones. It means "widow" but we have heard what is more the Biblical meaning of the word. You have to remember that many periods in history took meanings from the Bible very literally and they believed it very seriously. The point is, you need to know what this word means if you are venturing back in history. It is an important word in the genealogical vocabulary. Best regards.
