Thanks so much, Maureen. I had forgotten all about GenExchange, it had been a long time since I used it, I guess. I see that you have Shannons and Sullivans. I have John Shannon (m. Nora Lynch b. 1864 Ireland) and John Sullivan (m. Catherine Lynch b. 1868 Ireland), both married to older sisters of my grandmother and living with their families at 547 W. 26th St. in Manhattan in the 1900 Census. Do we connect? Thanks so much, Nancy! At least I remembered the right person to ask! Yes, GenExchange, of course! I was wracking my brain, sure there was another source of free databases I had used awhile back, but could not think of it. I did not know it was such a "drop in the bucket" compared to the total of Emigrant Savings Bank records, however. I will try to get to the films if I can ever get to NYC again. Meanwhile, if one were going to purchase film rolls instead of plane fare, Nancy or Don or anyone, can you repeat, please, 1) which are the film rolls that serve as an "index" to the others and 2) where and how does one order them? Thanks to all for the great help on this list! Would SKS be willing to do me a big favor? I lost my gt-grandparents in the 1920 census, and was hoping someone would be willing to take a peek and see if they're there. Brooklyn, Kings County, NY LYNCH, Martin head approx age: 60-65 born: Ireland LYNCH, Bridget wife approx age: 60-65 born: Ireland I believe they're residing at 144 Bergen Street in 1920 and should have at least two kids at home - John & Annie. The residence may have been a boarding house at this time. I didn't see them in the soundex at NARA, but I may have overlooked them. I just wanted to double check. Thank you so much for your time and help. Take care, Tracy
Dear Maureen: The Emigrant Savings Bank database is a part of the GenExchange which is currently down for repairs (some reprogramming, servers moved, providers changed, etc.). We are in the final stages of testing and reconfiguring everything and hope to have it back online soon. The GenExchange is independently operated and owned and has no affiliation whatsoever with Ancestry.com or RootsWeb. It is a completely free database website. I will make an announcement as soon as we are back. Keep in mind that even this database is but a fraction of what is included in the entire record group of the ESB records. To date I believe there are somewhere in the neighborhood of 4500 records. That is a drop in the bucket and if you find someone there, you've lucked out. It's a work in progress. So, if you DON'T find your ancestor listed it does not mean they did not have an account. You should check the original microfilms. Best regards. Nancy. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Maureen" <maureen1024@yahoo.com> To: <IRISH-NEW-YORK-CITY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 02, 2002 1:57 AM Subject: [IRISH-NYC] Emigrant Savings Bank > > Don, I don't know what happened to that wonderful database > at Ancestry.com! Hi Joy, I have been emailing several people back and forth about the Emigrant Savings Bank Records of NYC. The Emigrant Savings Bank was established in NYC about 1850 by Irish emigrants for emigrants. What makes the records special is that test deposit accounts were set up, since many of the people depositing money could not read and write. On the account information was listed such information as the person's address in NYC, family members names, what ship they came to America on, when they emigrated, their age, where they were from in Ireland, Germany, whereever. Now to the email below. There are very few places you can veiw these records. The test deposit account records have been microfilmed for the years 1850 - 1880. If you have access to NYPL then you are in luck. There are 7 other libraries that I know of that also have the collection. Let me know if you want the list. Other options are to hire someone to research for you or to purchase the microfilm for $25 a roll. Listed below in Mario's email is the phone number for requesting a form to fill out to purchase the microfilm. Don, I don't know what happened to that wonderful database at Ancestry.com! Does anyone else know? Nancy Coleman, do you know? I see something that comes up on AOL "members only" on a Google search .... and I wonder if that's where I found it. About two years ago, when I would have been searching Emigrant Bank Records, I used an AOL free trial for a bit. I know I went back to it several times over a period of weeks or months, as they added new records .... and there was comment about the woman who was compiling it, etc., probably on the regular NYC list at rootsweb. I know it was before October 2000, because I was still hunting for my grandmother when I was searching there .... and I found her in October 2000! I can't think where else it could have been besides Ancestry ..... but it surely doesn't seem to be there now. It even contained the private little personal notes from the "remarks" that the bank employees added on accounts, such things as "has mother in Galway town" and such. There is a book containing an index of depositors from 1950-1953, that one can order from the compiler. That shows up on a Google search. I havenoticed on sevral lists that people will often hire a "researcher" for looking and or checking out 'Names" of possible ancestors, especailly thru the rolls of films at the FHC. I have ben using a girl who lives i the SLC area nd charges $15. per hour. She is very good and seems verythourogh even checking things on a "just in case" scenerio. This may allow some of you to get more research done for your "buck". I know myself being on a fixed income I cannot afford most of the researchers that advertise. If anyone wants her name and e-mail address contact me. Just remember that they ( researchers are doing th ework for you that you cannot do and may have more knowledge of places to look, and need to be paid before they will send out the info. It's only fair--you'd want to be paid for your work, whatever you did. It's unfortunate that times some people just want the info and forget the hard work put into this obsession of looking for people who sometimes just refuse to be found, and do NOT pay! Pat

Was wondering if anyone braved the crowds at the National Archives to use the 1930 census today. If so, could you tell us all about it? Was the census difficult to access because it's largely unindexed? Do you have any tips for searching that you can share with us? Have read all the articles about using the 1930 census, but would rather hear from people who actually used it. Thank you for your time, Tracy

Elizabeth, I have not been able to search any microfilm myself, but I hired a research in Salt Lake City to look at the indexes for an hour. They charge $40 per hour so I did not want to hire for too long a period. They found several McGovern's on the index, so I am hopeful one of them will be my ancestors. I am not sure why the restrictions on the microfilm. Several people have mentioned that it is most likely the NYPL that put the restricitons on the microfilm. Supposedly they own the rights to the microfilm. Don --- "Elizabeth V.
