Hi - I've sort of lost track of where this Calvary Cemetery train of messages is leading. If any one is looking for internments in Calvary Cemetery (49-02 Laurel Hill Blvd., Woodside, NY 11317 ) it might be helpful to also look into the volunteer database maintained by the Irish Genealogical Society Int'l. (IGSI) in Minnesota. They have been putting this together for years. Keeping in mind that a majority of Irish immigrants came through NYC in the mid/late 1800's. Many had relatives here, and some family members stayed and others went across America. Those that died in NYC in those years (up to the 1930's) were likely buried in Calvary So there is a strong tie to this resting place. Members of IGSI have been submitting Calvary burial information into a database in the following form: First Date Grv Year Place RA- Donor Surname Name Interred # Age Born Born SEC NGE PLOT IG# If you find a relatives burial you also have found another family researcher by contacting the information donor. This is not restricted to just Irish, it has any Calvary burial submitted. There are also links to other sites containing Calvary information. This link should get you to the IGSI site. http://www.rootsweb.com/~irish/igsi_published/cemetery/calnet96.htm Also to follow the "Perpetual Care" tales; try opening an old grave for a new burial if the "Perpetual Care" bill is overdue. If you can prove it did not exist when the plot was purchased (you have the original deed) you can fight the costs. However this generally comes up when a new burial is about to be held and the original deeds are nowhere to be found. So the distraught family members pay. I have family buried in Calvary since 1887 and the plots are all still there, although the cemetery "accidentally" removed some iron boundary markers in order to allow faster grass cutting. Some older plots from 1910's had no headstones but we know their exact location and they have not been disturbed. They did not have any such thing as extra perpetual care cost, that is a recent innovation, about 1950's. Cemetery maintenance went with the gravesite. In "olden" days they had the manpower and took more care in maintenance. Good Luck in your research, Bud L
Hello Maureen, I would love to find aconnection to Mary KING SHANNON (b July1859 Brooklyn) she was my ggrandfather's sister. I know she lived at least until 1932 in Manhatten. I don't have her husband's name. Her sister Sarah or Sadie lived at 231 E. 72nd Manhatten in 1932. Now Mary King Shannon's parents names were Francis KING and Bridget McCue. Most of this family lived in Williamsburg, after arriving from who knows where in Ireland, from 1850 to 1908. After that I find them in Manhatten and the Bronx. Any possiblities? In response to Barb's situation with NY Death Certificate. When you request a death certificate you should write on there that you'd like the VAULT COPY. Otherwise you get the computer generated form. :-)Barbara from Seattle

I could probably manage to afford that. $5,000.00 is a little out of my reach. Barb in CT

Merriam's defines the word 'esquire' as: 1. member of the English gentry ranking below a knight 2. candidate for knighthood serving as shield bearer and attendant to a knight 3. a landed proprietor 4. a title of courtesy when placed in its abbreviated form after the surname (John R. Smith, Esq.) Take care, Tracy
Start with e-mailing archives@newyork.nara.gov Tell them everything you know about him, as briefly as poss. Since you have the all-important date, you'll probably get *copies* of the original documents in the mail within a few weeks, with a letter and a bill for research services. I did that, had the date too, and got the copies I wanted with an invoice for $10. which I was happy to pay. I never expected it to be so easy! However, the date of my relative's natz was in 1900. I don't know if you'll have the same response. I found out the one thing I was longing to know: where in Ireland he came from! I e-mailed for info on another relative on whom I had very little info,- just approx dates. They sent me back copies of the index cards (forget what they're called) of several indiv. with that name, and a letter saying if any of them looked like mine and I wanted copies of the full file, to contact them. So thought you might be happy to find this out! Good luck! I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I need to ask again. I have a naturalization date for one of my ancestors, 10/25/1867, Superior Court, NY County. How do I obtain a copy of the original record and should it provide much information? Thanks in advance. <<Is it possible just to make a tax deductible contribution of, say, $100 a year to the "Archdiocese of NY, Calvary Cemetery" if one cannot pay the $5,000 due? >> I do not see why not. All contributions of that kind are deductible and you can earmark it for Calvary. You can also negotiate with Calvary. They m ight wave the old charges if you pay the current fee for Perpetual care. I did that in one instance. Elizabeth V. Cardinal EVC1369@comcast.net evcardinal@yahoo.com www.geocities.com/evcardinal/
The soil at Calvary is extremely sandy hence the quick decomposition. Once you bury two or three people in them using concrete liners that ends the burying of another person. Elizabeth V. Cardinal EVC1369@comcast.net evcardinal@yahoo.com www.geocities.com/evcardinal/
It is my understanding that Calvary is well endowed and investments have paid off. How true this is, I do not know. I do know they took down all those lovely wrought iron fences and then sold plots in what were once walkways. My in laws are buried there. Calvary told me once they do not resell plots. Does anyone know if this is still true? I inherited numerous plots in Pinelawn that my great grandmother purchases in 1905. There has never been a burial in any of them and Pinelawn is not interested in buying them back either. Elizabeth V. Cardinal EVC1369@comcast.net evcardinal@yahoo.com www.geocities.com/evcardinal/

I used to see them in NY and NJ ---- now I see them in Chicago papers. There are regular sections for them, just like furniture or real estate ads in the classifieds, there are cemetery plots, too. Try your favorite paper in the vicinity of the cemetery. Maureen --- "Elizabeth V. Today we generally use the honorary term "Esquire" for members of the legal profession. I was noticing the use of the term in the 1857 Irish-American in the references to marriages and to general news. Is anyone familiar with the usage in 1857? Jim B.
