    2. On Saturday, April 6 at 2 pm, midtown Manhattan will be taken over by a drum and pipe parade in honor of National Tartan Day. An estimated 10,000 pipers & drummers are expected for this record-breaking parade! The parade will span 36 city blocks up Sixth Avenue and through Central Park. The FDNY Emerald Society has already distributed the music and it is reported to contain seven sets in three groupings: 'Green Hills of Tyrol', 'The Battle's O'er' and 'Lochanside' in 3/4 slow time; 'Farewell to the Creeks' and 'Cock of the North' in fast 6/8 time; and 'Scotland the Brave' and 'Minstrel Boy' in common 4/4 time. Instructions are to play each tune once and repeat the set until instructed to stop! The brigade of pipers will be led up Sixth Avenue by actor Sean Connery. The fund-raising goal of the event is $1 million for cancer-care organizations throughout the US and the UK. It is reported that the FDNY Emerald Society will be honored. Pipe & Drum bands from most Scottish-American and Irish-American organizations will be represented! The parade will be televised both in the US and the UK. Stations haven't been announced. 1. Re: [IRISH-NYC] Calvary Cemetery-Free Grave
    2. Bud, Thank you so much for your response to my post. You are correct in saying that some buried in this location lived alone and died in a hospital as my grandmother died in the hospital and she was alone, as all her children were taken away in the 40's for some reason and she and her husband divorced or just went their seperate ways, and you could also be correct in saying she was looked after by a priest, as their was a priest from Saint Vincents that helped my grandmothers, mother raise her children. My grandmother was not allowed to visit or see her children. I know their father tried to see them once but was thrown off the property and sent away. We still to this day have nothing further on my grandfather or grandmother. I know very little of my grandparents families. Its sad though to think she died alone and didn't even have a family plot to be buried in. Hopefully one day I will learn more about my grandmothers life and what lead her to be alone in life and death. Thanks for your kind response. Wanda

If by chance, you should find yourself unsubscribed (and didn't request it), please just go ahead and subscribe again. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. 1. RE: [IRISH-NYC] Calvary Cemetery-Free Grave
    2. BudL
    3. Wanda - Calvary Cemetery has a few "Free Grave" sections - I know section 39 also has this. Free grave burials were generally requested by a Parish Priest for a deceased church member who did not have funds to purchase a regular site. Often these poor souls lived alone and died in a hospital and no family could be found. The purpose was to have them buried in consecrated ground as opposed to the City's Potters field. I believe this practice still exists. Some have been re-buried into a purchased grave after family members were made aware of the death. This happened in my family, but the re-burial occurred within a year of death and free grave burial location could be determined. You are looking back 50 years, think of it as a burial section, not individual graves. Be comforted that your Grandmother was buried in consecrated grounds, some Parish Priest looked after her. 2. Any time I've encountered the word 'gentleman' as someone's occupation (in the early 20th century), it's for a person who was retired. So I always assumed it was a polite term for retired. Was this in reference to an older person? Take care, Tracy

    2. My grandmother is buried in Calvary Cemetery and the address on her death cert. gives address as Long Island City, Queens Co.NY. She died in 1952 and is buried in Section 14,Range 47 Plot L GRAVE 13 AND 14. When I called the cemetery to find out exactley where she was buried I was given the above information and told this part of the cemetery was owned by Calvary and for those who could not afford a burial. This section has no head stones and when I asked her who else was in the same grave she said many people, and not related, it was the way she said "Many" that makes me think there is an awfull lot in her grave.I would like to find out who else is in the graves with my grandmother, can someone tell me how to go about this? The last time I wrote to Calvary I waited over a year and still never heard from them thats when I called them for the location of her grave. Can anyone help me get this information? If I can get it I will post all names on this board maybe it will help others find their relatives also. Wanda
