Hello I just joined the list and am happy to find so much information regarding the Irish in NYC. The family I am researching is: James John MURPHY married to Mary Ellen MOORE (datess unknown) ----together they had ,among other children, Mary Francis MURPHY and Margaret Rose MURPHY---There may have also been a child named Sarah. Info from a divorce record states there was another sister and a brother. This family was in NYC in the 1860s on . Mary and Margaret were born there Mary circa 1863 and Margaret circa 1870. Mary and Margaret both had connections to William Striven HEAL who was a taxidermist in NYC but who came from an English-Scottish family from Bowmanville, Ontario Canada. Mary Francis MURPHY married William Striven Heal in 1884 in NYC and they had one son Elbert Montgomery HEAL in 1887. Later when Elbert was about three , Margaret (Mary's younger sister) ran off with Marys husband. Mary was divorced from Mr. Heal in 1891. A possibility exists that if William S. HEAL and Margaret had any children from their alliance I wuld be related to them on both sides. Would be so interesting to find out about this part of my family. My father was Elbert Montgomery HEAL. AM going to NYC in October to do research on this family and would love any helpful suggestions on where to go and what to look through. Thank you for your help Ginger Montague
My ancestors arrived from Ireland approx. 1850 & settled in St. Joe, MO. Then relocated to Denver, CO. Any connections would be appreciated. Mary Jo
Owen MARTIN born in Ireland around 1839. I have no information on his parents name, or where in Ireland he came from. Death Certificate left blank on parents info. Same for his wife Ann KENNY or KINNEY. Her death certificate was left blank on parents info, she also was born in Ireland around 1839. What I do know is that they were married at St Michael Catholic church in New York City on Sept. 7, 1862. On the marriage record from the church, it list Peter KENNY as the witness whom I'm guessing is either Ann's father or brother. I checked with the church to see if they had any records that would tell me where in Ireland they came from, and St. Michaels advised they do not have that information. They also do not have any baptism records on the first three children who were born in New York. By 1870, they had moved to Trenton, NJ where I have found them on census records and birth records for the other children born in NJ. Owen died in 1896 and on the census records in later years where it asks for immigration information, it was left blank, so I'm not even sure how long they were in the US. Ann died in 1916.

It took me three times to actually access the site tonight. I wonder if there is some sort of hiccup with Freeservers? Anyway, here's the URL: http://www.irishinnyc.freeservers.com/ To search the site, use the new Pico search engine. (the second one) It's recently indexed and more sensitive. You can use that to search for keywords or surnames, etc. If you'd like to just read through the transcriptions, you will find them added to the pages listed on the site menu: ie, Marriages in Ireland, News in Ireland, etc. If anyone has any more problems, please let me know! Take care, Tracy

My great-great grandfather, LUKE CRANNEY arrived in Albany, NY at the end of 1870. This is before Ellis Island opened. He must have docked in New York City somewhere. He probably lived there before coming to Albany, NY. Is there any way I can find where his ship would have arrived. Also, is there a list of all ships and passengers arriving in New York in 1870? Luke was with his wife Lucy and baby Mary. They immigrated from Liverpool, Ireland. Thank you very much Regina Cranney

I am fairly new to this list. Here is the family I am researching: Thomas H Carroll b abt 1822 Ireland. m Anna Murphy b abt. 1830 Ireland. children: Catherine A b. 12/22/1849 NYC d. 1915 Evansville, IN Thomas b abt 1853 NYC d. 1926 Evansville, IN There is probably more children to them but I can not find them in the 1860 Census. In 1850 they were in NYC Ward 16 Dist. 2. The other problem is also Catherine's birth. I have a paper indicated she was born 1849. Her death record indicates 1850, Her marriages (2) along with census indicates 1852. So the parents above in the 1850 census could be wrong....but it is the only one found that matches completely with the fact she is listed 7/12 months old and that goes with Dec. 1849. If anyone can find them in the 1860 that would be great. So far I haven't. Thanks. Regina Finan

Is anyone on the List san expert on voting rules. I had once looked up the record of an Irish immigrant for 1871 or thereabouts. I had his address in Manhattan and after finding the right book ( microfilm ) I found his name on a voting register. To the right was written the date and court house where he was naturalized. It seemed that everyone in this particular book had been naturalized so I assume there were two records: one for native-borns and one for aliens. I have not checked other records for other years, but I am wondering if this was the procedure for other towns and other states. Anyone know? Of course once I got a copy of this immigrant's naturalizaton papers I did not get all the information I was hoping for because in those days they did not give the date of immigration.
