    1. [IRISH-NYC] Re: IRISH-NEW-YORK-CITY-D Digest V02 #105 Calvary Plots for the indigent
    2. I questioned a plot number that a cousin provided and asked for the interment list. An office worker told me that the plot was assigned for burials where no funds were available. Sometimes a parish would own some plots. She said the people in the plots were not related to each other and for me not to waste my money.

    1. Re: [IRISH-NYC] Updates to list website
    2. This is for Betty Garcia in NJ. I was reading your posting earlier when you mentioned the name Coffey. The Coffeys in my family came from Galway Ballinasloe area. Now this neck of the woods is like a border area and several other counties touch on it like Rosscommon,Mayo and maybe one or two more counties. I was recently in touch with my Grandfather Patrick Coffey's(dob 1870's aprox) sister's (Elizabeth (Bessie) Coffey dob late 1860's early 1870's) great grand daughter and she told me Bessie was from Co Claire which borders on the South of Galway. So my Coffey's are either from Galway or Claire. Lots of help eh, but it gives you a couple of places to look. Best Wishes,Ann

    2. This is for Russell Brown, I have Purcell's from Kerry. I know the spelling is wrong here but they are from the Ivarragh Pennelsa area. If you can see a map of Kerry it is one of the fingers sticking out on the coast. The Bishop of Galway that just resigned was a Comiskey which hits me as not a very Irish sounding name but guess it is. I think the Purcells were from Cosha or Casha in Kerry my spelling is not my strong suit you can tell(and the spell checker is not finding the right spelling either.) Best Wishes, Ann

    3. Looking for any information on David McNeill (1845-1895) - first appearance was in the 1875 State Census in Brooklyn, Ward 17. He was a boatman - his wife was Marcella (Margery) McVickers (1847-1893). I believe they were from Antrim (family story). I also believe they did not come to Brooklyn directly from Ireland - according to death certificates, they were somewhere else in the US for about 5 years.... Thanks in advance Grace

    2. David McDevitt (b. abt. 1831)/ Mary Corey (b. abt. 1818): in NYC 1853-1856 and 1866-1888 David McDevitt married Mary Corey in 1853 at Old St. Patrick's Cathedral witnesses were James Corey and Sarah Corey.  All moved to West Rutland, VT by abt.1856.  David McDevitt and Mary Corey McDevitt returned to New York in 1866 and lived at 312 W. 44th St. until he returned to West Rutland, VT in 1888. David McDevitt was from Parish of Ardstra, County Tyrone, Ireland and Mary Corey was from Parish of Dromore, County Tyrone, Ireland. James Corey (b. abt 1836) in NYC 1853- 1856 James Corey is related to the above Mary Corey but is not son or brother.  He moved to West Rutland, VT abt 1856 at the same time as David McDevitt and Mary Corey.  Sarah Corey (b. abt  1820) Sister of James Corey, she does not appear in West Rutland records until 1900.  * In 1916, John H. 3. Hi Listers, My roll call submission is William BEATSON who was born abt. 1876. William was from: Townland - Ballygilbert County - Down Barony - Castlereagh Lower Civil Parish - Bangor PLU - Newtownards Province - Ulster William married Rose McKENNA who was born about 1876 and they emigrated to New York in the late 1800's. William died about July 1949 and his will states that he resided at 16 East 69th Street, Manhattan, New York and that he was to be buried at St. James Episcopal Church, 71st Street and Madison Avenue, City of New York. I have e-mailed the church several times but I don't receive a response. Does anyone have access to records at St. James Episcopal Church or know if there is a graveyard at the church? Or could SKS living near St. James call them up for me just to find out if they will even provide any information. The telephone number on their website http://www.stjames.org/home.html is (212) 288-4100. I would be grateful for any advice or guidance. Regards Shirley Deasley

    1. [IRISH-NYC] Moloney, Fitzgerald, Rieley, Leonard, Lennon, Kehoe, McGrath
    2. Russell K. Brown
    3. Roll call: Jerry (Jeremiah?) Moloney arrived in NYC before 1830, married Charlotte Wardelien about 1830, died about 1832. He was a smith of some sort. His name is on a family marker in Evergreens Cemetery but I don't know where he's buried. John Fitzgerald, from the city of Cork, arrived in NYC in 1847. He married Bridget Rieley about 1852. They lived for many years on Front St. John died in 1910. He was a caulker all his life. Buried Calvary. Bridget Rieley, from County Cavan, arrived in NYC in 1846. She married John Fitzgerald (see above). They had 5 or 6 daughters, no sons. Calvary. Thomas Leonard gave his age as 28 when he enlisted in 1861 and his birthplace as Kilkenny. He married Margaret Lennon about 1852 and they had 6 or 7 children. Tom was wounded in the Civil War and collected a pension until his death in New Haven, CT, in 1878. I have never found his burial place. Margaret Lennon came to NYC about 1846 at the age of 16 with "a spinning wheel and a rocking chair," unlikely implements for a teenage girl. She married Thomas Leonard about 1852 and remained in NYC after he left her in 1872. She died in 1914. Her mother was a Comiskey; her cousin was Peter Bannon, the Trappist monk, who lived and died at Gethsemane, KY. Calvary. Michael and Sarah Jane (Purcell) Kehoe came to NYC with several children about 1852. They had at least 5 more children after arrival. Michael was a tailor and practiced his trade until his death in 1879. Sarah Jane died in 1883. Both Calvary. John Francis McGrath was born NYC in 1885. His parents' names were allegedly Thomas and Mary. Thomas was a grocer. John was placed in an orphanage when his mother died about 1890. John died in 1912, age 27. John is my worst brick wall. I found him in the 1900 census as a 14 year old printer at the Mt. Loretto home on Lafayette St. but nothing earlier.

    1. [IRISH-NYC] CREAN-BREEN
    2. My family of Creans came to New York in the 1860's. My great grandmother Mary, brought her children over after the death of her husband. She settled on the west side and lived there all of her life. My grandmother, Catherine Breen, came over in 1893, and met my grandfather in New York. Ironically, they came from two nearby towns in County Kerry. She was from Castleisland, and my grandfather, Nicholas was from Currow, but never met each other until they arrived in New York. My father, Cornelius, and all of his brothers were born in the area of W. 56 St. and Columbus Circle. Like most family's of that day, they migrated to Queens in the early 20's, and settled in the Jackson Heights, Elmhurst area. Dotty McManus
