    1. [IRISH-NYC] Roll Call: McGovern, Cullen, & McDonough
    2. Don McGovern
    3. I am researching a James McGovern and wife, Mary Cullen, who came to NYC in March 1849 from Co. Leitrim, Ireland. James was born 1792 and Mary 1794. Two of their children, John and Bridget, came to NYC in April 1847 with Mary Cullen's younger brother, John Cullen and his family. The McGovern's lived on Roosevelt Street in the 4th Ward from 1849 till approx 1861. (I have found no trace of my NYC McGovern's after this point; they were in the 1860 census and the 1861 NYC directory).Their 3 sons all moved on to the state of Mississippi, 2 in 1852 and the last in 1869. John Cullen, ba 1800, and his wife Ally or Alice McDonough ba 1800, came from Co. Leitrim. John Cullen and his family stayed in NYC for a short time and where living in Lawrence, Mass by 1850. I am trying to locate the death records for the McGoverns that stayed in NYC. I have found Bridget's death record from Dec. 27, 1851. On the death record it said she was "Removed from City". I thought this probably meant she was buried at Calvary. I wrote Calvary and just this weekend found out she is not in their records. 1. [IRISH-NYC] HOLIHAN, SULLIVAN, O'DONNELL, FLOOD 1836+ in Bklyn
    2. Hi, My ancestor was Margaret Holihan (b. abt 1827) in Nova Scotia and arrived in Bklyn about 1836. She married first Lawrence HARROLD (1822-1848) and had one son James HARROLD (1846-1905). Then she married my ggg-grandfather, Patrick FLOOD and had 2 children John (1854-1901) & Catherine (1862-1899) who m. Henry LAKE. I have recently gained new information abt Margaret's HOLIHAN family. Her brother ( who very kindly left her $5,000 in his will ) was Thomas HOLIHAN (1806-1879), a contractor living at 283 Pacific St., Bklyn. A sister was also mentioned - Bridget O'Donnell (1815-?), who I have since discovered was first married to a Mr. SULLIVAN and had 2 girls - Bridget (b.1843) & Catherine (b.1845). A widowed Bridget then married Patrick O'DONNELL by 1850. Any one researching HOLIHAN (HOLAHAN, HOULIHAN) or FLOOD in Bklyn ? Does anyone have an ancestor born in Canada who traveled to NY before 1850 ? How did they arrive ? by ship ? overland ? Any ideas welcome, Kathy Then

    1. [IRISH-NYC] Roll Call - McDONALD, McCARTHY, LEDDY, O'MEARA, HIGGINS
    2. My husband's great-grandfather was Patrick McDONALD, born 19 Nov 1841 in County Cavan and died 1 Nov 1918, buried in St. John's Cemetery in Queens. Before his marriage, he was a bartender for a Patrick KENNAN in Manhattan and lived on East 7th Street. According to family lore, he immigrated first to Canada and then to NYC. Patrick McDONALD's siblings were John, born abt 1839 in County Cavan, later a member of the NYPD; Frank, born about 1843; Bridget, born about 1845, married LEWIS; and Rose, born about 1847, married LAWLOR. Patrick McDONALD married Ann Catherine LEDDY on 14 Jun 1885. He and wife Ann later lived in Richmond Hill, Queens. She was born 8 Mar 1854 on a farm in Ridgewood, Queens, and died 9 Sep 1935. Their children were: Francis Joseph [my husband's grandfather] born 7 Jul 1886 and died about 1935 [more below]; Thomas Patrick born 2 Jul 1889, died 31 May 1915; Mary Elizabeth, born 2 Jul 1889 and died in her 90s; Catherine/Kathryn Anne born 27 Dec 1890 and died 22 Jun 1952; and Anne/Anna Marie born 6 Jun 1893 and died 1975. Ann Catherine LEDDY's parents were Patrick LEDDY and Catherine/Catrine McCARTHY. Patrick was born 17 Mar 1822 in County Cavan, died 19 Oct 1894 in a road accident on Metropolitan Avenue [family rumor says it was 'no accident']. He immigrated about 1845 and worked on a farm in what is now Flushing, Queens (Union Tpke and Vleigh Rd). His wife Catherine worked on the same farm. Catherine McCARTHY was born 16 Dec 1821 in County Kerry and died 14 Dec 1906. They were married 8 Feb 1852 at St. Peter's Church on Barclay St., NYC. The couple later bought the farm where they worked and did quite well selling butter to the govt during the Civil War. Their children were Ann Catherine [above], Daniel born 2 Mar 1856 and died 29 Feb 1940; and Thomas Patrick born 8 Sep1858 and died 15 Mar 1925. Catherine McCARTHY had a brother John and a sister Mary. John was born about 1815 in County Kerry and immigrated before the girls. He died 12 Jun 1882. Mary died Jun 1916 in NYC. Francis Joseph McDONALD [above] married Ruth O'MEARA, born about 1890 and died 1963. She was the daughter of Thomas O'MEARA and Adella/Della HIGGINS. Thomas worked at Masterson's blacksmith shop in Brooklyn. Della was from Waterford, Ireland, immigrated about 1860, and her father's name may have been Edward. Her father was allegedly a close friend of the author William Makepeace Thackeray, and there may be some military connection to India.

Most of them lived in the NYC,Brooklyn, LI area. Mary Ellen and Charles and the children attended St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Brooklyn, though Mary Ellen was, I believe, a Catholic by birth. 3. Hi Regina, I rarly see the name Finan but that's one I'm trying to find info on. I have a Bridget Finan who married James McCaffrey in Ireland. My great grandfather was born after 1845, James Thomas McCaffrey was born after 1845 so I would guess they were born circa 1820-1830. That's all the info I have on the Finan side of the family. I don't know if they came to the US with James Thomas or not. He emigrated about 1970 at about age 24 years. In 1850 they were in NYC Ward 16 Dist. 2. The other problem is also Catherine's birth. I have a paper indicated she was born 1849. Her death record indicates 1850, Her marriages (2) along with census indicates 1852. So the parents above in the 1850 census could be wrong....but it is the only one found that matches completely with the fact she is listed 7/12 months old and that goes with Dec. 1849. If anyone can find them in the 1860 that would be great. So far I haven't. Thanks.
