    1. [IRISH-NYC] Origins - Church Records
    2. County of Arrival - Church Records Certain denominations kept better records than others. Roman Catholic and Lutheran are the most noted examples of excellent record keeping. You are most likely to encounter your ancestor's county of origin in Ireland in marriage or death records, depending on the denomination. Here's an example: The Roman Catholic Church requires that all its members complete the appropriate sacraments prior to marriage in the church i.e., baptism & confirmation. When an immigrant (or anyone for that matter) wanted to marry in a Catholic Church, they have to provide the church with proof of (at least) being baptized. This is even true today. Many times, the immigrant would give the name and location of his/her church in Ireland. Now, whether or not the church in the US would record this information was up to the parish. In many cases, they did. The Quakers (Society of Friends) sometimes recorded the origins of newcomers in their monthly meeting records, as did other denominations. In one instance in my own research, I discovered a county of origin for an ancestor in the sexton's records of an Episcopal church! Church records (or parish rolls) are also a good way to track when your ancestors entered and left a certain area. For example, the census may tell you your ancestors arrived in 1890. However, they may appear in the church records in 1885! When contacting any church, it's a good idea to specifically ask if they have information pertaining to your ancestor's country of origin. I had contacted a church in Philadelphia regarding baptismal information on my grandfather. They were kind enough to send me baptismal info on the entire family AND the baptismal info on the parents in Ireland - church name, town and county! I couldn't believe it! If you never ask, you may never know. But remember, the churches were *not* required to record this information. Take care, Tracy

    2. I would like to apologize for the confusion I've created due to my not explaining myself better. These notes I am referring to are my own private notes. I will be sending each part to the list in a separate post - alphabetically. I will flag the subject line with the word 'Origin' so anyone who is interested will know it's part of the same thread. Again, I'm very sorry for any confusion I've caused. It's been a long and tiring week! Thank you for your time and patience, Tracy

    1. [IRISH-NYC] Post 1901 Census - another step in our campaign
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. My apologies in advance for the length of this message. During our campaign to regain public access to Historic Census Records we have used a variety of methods to make our needs known. We have written to MPs and Senators, to the Expert Panel, and various Ministers. Our recent brief tactic of faxing polite requests to Industry Minister Allan Rock was, we believe, a successful effort. Arising out of our legal Application for a Judicial Review and my recent cross-examination by Justice Canada lawyers comes a suggestion for another step in our campaign. As indicated in my recent posting regarding my cross-examination, my impression was that the lawyers from Justice Canada felt that anyone wanting access to the 1906 Census records should be making Access to Information Requests to Statistics Canada and/or the National Archives, and when we are refused we should submit a complaint to the Information Commissioner. Our suggestion at this time is that we should accomodate these learned individuals. We should do so by having everyone interested in genealogical or historical research submit an Access to Information Request for the schedules of the 1906 Census of the Western Provinces to Statistics Canada and/or the National Archives of Canada. Having made this suggestion I must now advise that anyone submitting such a request is required by the ATI Act to submit with each request a check for five dollars (Cdn) made out to the "Receiver General of Canada". At the discretion of the department to which the Request is submitted this check may, or may not, be returned. The ability to submit an Access to Information Request is limited to permanent residents of Canada. Unfortunately this requirement eliminates the participation of our many supporters from outside of Canada. An Access to Information Request may be made simply by writing a letter, or by downloading forms (in Word, WordPerfect, or Adobe PDF formats) from a Government of Canada website at http://infosource.gc.ca/Info_4/atip/Request-Frms_e.html Your message need not be lengthy. Use your own words to say something like the following: "As a family historian and genealogist I have a requirement to view and obtain information regarding my ancestors from Historic Census Records. The Privacy Act of Canada, and Regulations attached thereto, provide that information from Census may be made available to any person or body, for purposes of research, 92 years after collection. This message is to be considered my Request, under the Access to Information Act, for access to schedules of the 1906 Special Census of the Western Provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba). Thank you." Adjust the wording to suit your personal circumstance, but be specific about needing to view the records for the 1906 Census. Address your requests to Statistics Canada ATIP Co-ordinator, Pamela White R.H. Coats Building, 25th Floor Tunney's Pasture Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0T6 National Archives of Canada ATIP Co-ordinator, Bill Wood 395 Wellington Street, Room 349 Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0N3 Departments receiving ATI requests are required by law to respond within thirty days of receipt of your request. When you receive their official denial of your request, and we know that it will be denied, you are then entitled to complain about this denial to the Information Commissioner of Canada. It is important that in addition to making the ATI Request you follow through with a complaint when it is denied. There is no charge to make such a complaint. Address your complaint to: Mr. John Reid Information Commissioner of Canada Place de Ville, Tower B 112 Kent Street, 22nd Floor Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 1H3 So that we might be able to have some idea of how many ATI requests are made for the 1906 records I would ask that you send me a copy of your Request. These may be sent to me by fax at (604) 942-6843, or by snail mail to Gordon A. Watts 1455 Delia Drive Port Coquitlam, BC V3C 2V9 Thank you all for your continued support. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 1. [IRISH-NYC] Fw: Post 1901 Census - The legal case
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. On Friday 10 May 2002 our lawyer, Lois Sparling was in Ottawa to cross-examine representatives of Chief Statistician Ivan Fellegi (Mary Ledoux) and National Archivist Ian Wilson (Greg Eamon). It would appear that our expectations of a straight forward question and answer period dealing with the issues was not to be. Lois indicates that Justice Canada lawyers stone-walled much of her line of questioning and refused to allow the witnesses to answer many of her questions. Simple questions such as when the 1906 Census returns were micro-filmed, and by whom, were not allowed to be answered. The witnesses had obviously been coached on what they could or could not say and were prevented from answering many of the questions posed by Lois. A possible surprize in these cross-examinations was the lack of response from the witness representing Ian Wilson who, we know from personal conversations with him, supports our efforts to regain public access to the Post 1901 Census records. It is presumed that a reluctance to cooperate by this witness was once again directed by the Justice Canada lawyers. Professor Bill Waiser of the University of Saskatchewan, and myself were cross-examined Tuesday 14 May 2002, in Lois Sparling's Calgary offices. As we were questioned separately, I cannot say what Professor Waiser was questioned on. My own questioning was a surprize, and not what I had expected. I had thought to be questioned on some of the legal points of our arguments but such was not the case. The thrust of the questions asked of me had to do with whether or not I was a professional genealogist, and whether or not I had personally made an Access to Information Request for access to the 1901 Census records. While Lois made no objection to any of the questions asked of me by the Justice lawyers, they refused to allow me to answer some questions she asked in re-examination. My impression, from their line of questioning, is that they expect anyone seeking information from the 1906 Census to submit an Access to Information Request for that information, and when that is refused, to submit a complaint with the Informations Commissioner. It would appear that their line of thought is that if we did not follow this route, then we have not availed ourselves of alternate methods of obtaining information from Census. My own response to their question on this was that I had not personally made an ATI Request for access to the 1906 Census Record. I had not done so because I was aware of Professor Waiser's application, and refusal thereof, and that it was well known that Statistics Canada would not honour such a request. I noted also, that while the intent of the Access to Information Act was to enable easier access to information, it was more often than not used by the governement to exclude or exempt the information requested. Professor Waiser and myself were the only plaintiffs to be personally cross-examined by Justice Canada. The remaining plaintiffs were sent written interogatories, the thrust of which were also questioning whether or not they had personally made ATI Requests for the 1906 Census Records to either Statistics Canada or the National Archives. Lois indicates that she will likely have to bring an application in Federal Court to compel answers to her questions, and may have to bring another court application to compel timely compliance with the undertakings they did give. She may also have to make more court applications to get answers to the next set of questions and timely compliance with the next set of undertakings. All in all it would appear that the main objective of the Justice Canada lawyers is further delay. It is well known that the positions of Chief Statistician Ivan Fellegi and National Archivist Ian Wilson are diametrically opposed. Dr. Fellegi opposes access to the records while Ian Wilson supports it. We do not see how lawyers from Justice Canada can represent the positions of both defendants. In our opinion this is a clear case of conflict of interest. There are set time limits for each stage of our application. This has been only one stage of the proceedings and we will keep you informed of our progress though each stage. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 1. [IRISH-NYC] Origins - Census
    2. Census Can the federal census be helpful in determining the county of origin in Ireland? Indirectly. It can definitely give you the tools to find more records. The federal census asks for country of birth. Well, we know its Ireland. But it also gives the year of immigration, number of years the person has been in the US and in the case of a naturalized individual, the year of naturalization. (I'll go into naturalization records in detail in a later post.) However, the 1925 New York State Census can be even more helpful. This census specifically asks naturalized individuals for, not only the year of naturalization, but where! From the census pages I've viewed, the name of the court is usually given, ie: Kings County Court, Brooklyn City Court, etc. The 1925 NY State Census is *not* surname indexed. In order to properly search the schedules, you will need to obtain the Assembly and Election Districts. This is usually done by obtaining an address, then checking the ad & ed maps. If you are unable to determine an address but know your ancestors lived in a specific neighborhood during this period, you can locate the Assembly District for the neighborhood and search the schedules page by page. There is one big drawback to any census: it is only as accurate as the person giving and/or recording the information. In other words, you will find lots of discrepancies in the censuses for one family. It's best to use the census information as a guide. I have a copy of the 1925 Kings County (Brooklyn) Assembly District map. I would be very happy to search an address! I only ask one thing - if possible, please try to give a house number with the address. Many streets ran through more than one Assembly District. This map does *not* break down into Election Districts. Take care, Tracy

    1. [IRISH-NYC] Cemeteries
    2. Country of Arrival Records Before you bring your search back to Ireland, it's important to exhaust your resources in the United States. Various agencies and institutions did a fairly good job of record-keeping, and in most cases, these records still exist. Searching all US sources becomes even more important when you take into account that many Irish records haven't survived -- for example, the various censuses from the 19th century. Cemeteries Tombstone inscriptions and sexton's records are usually the best sources for determining the county of origin in Ireland. You are more likely to find this information if the cemetery is attached to a specific church. For example, tombstones for Irish-born in Roman Catholic cemeteries are famous for stating for the birthplace in Ireland. Even if the tombstone does not give a place of origin, it (or an internment list) may give clues to other relatives whose origins can be traced. Be cautious though. Tombstones and sexton's records are only as accurate as the person giving the information. While sexton's records can sometimes give you a county of origin or direct you to relatives buried nearby, they can contain mistakes. Tombstones have always been expensive. Many poorer Irish were buried either without a headstone or with one that may simply state the last name. If your Irish immigrant family was poor, don't be too surprised if there isn't even a headstone on their grave. There have been some wonderful books written where Irish tombstones have been transcribed: "Old Calvary Cemetery: New Yorkers Carved in Stone" Rosemary Muscarella ISBN: 0788404539 http://www.readthemovie.com/rootsbooks/amazon.cgi?0788404539 "Tombstones of the Irish Born: Cemetery of the Holy Cross, Flatbush, Brooklyn" Joseph M. Silinonte ISBN: 0788400770 http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/BookStore/ShowProduct.cfm?PRODID=266 NOTE: These books only list tombstones where a location in Ireland is actually listed on the tombstone. I can personally attest to Mr. Silinonte's book. Surnames are listed alphabetically and cross-referenced. Would be very grateful to hear of similar books for other cemeteries in the NYC area! If you obtain an internment list, be sure to try and research the other people buried in the grave. Usually, but not always, they were relatives. By researching these relatives, you may just uncover your county of origin! Take care, Tracy

    1. [IRISH-NYC] County of Origin
    2. Trying to research your ancestors in Ireland without a specific county of origin is usually futile. Some researchers may already be blessed with this knowledge. It may have been discussed often in their family. Then there is the rest of us who are just stuck. When I first started researching my family history, I had the opportunity to sit down a genealogist who specialized in Irish research. I took many notes and learned a lot from him. I'd like to pass along my notes, in the hopes that it may help you discover where in Ireland your family hails from. The notes are broken down into two parts: country of arrival records (in this case, meaning the US) and country of origin records (meaning Ireland). I'll start with the country of arrival records, and discuss them in alphabetical order. A quick note: these records are not guaranteed to give you the county of origin in Ireland, but are the most likely. Take care, Tracy

    1. [IRISH-NYC] Vir*s Hoaxes
    2. There are as many vir*s hoaxes as there are vir*ses. There are several new ones making the rounds at the moment. A good rule of thumb is to simply delete any email that tells you to remove a specified file from your hard drive. This is your red flag that it's a hoax. Symantec has an alphabetical listing of vir*s hoaxes that is very helpful: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/hoax.html However, we are in the midst of a very real vir*s that is a major pain in the neck - Klez. I hope your virus software has been updated with current definitions and you are running frequent scans. Klez is VERY difficult to remove and is wrecking havoc on a number of lists. Please remember that Klez forges the From address, so you may not be able to tell who the infected party really is. If your computer should become infected, please contact me off-list and I would be happy to help as much as I can. Take care and be safe! Tracy IRISH-NEW-YORK-CITY list admin

I received the following from a friend of mine. I checked and did, in fact, have the virus. When I searched my C:\ drive looking for jdbgmgr.exe, the file did not pop up, but when I searched looking for *.exe, I encountered a long list of .exe files and did find the virus there. I'm not sure if this is one of those cases in which all we are doing is deleting an unimportant file, but I don't think it is worth the possible disaster NOT to follow the instructions. Sorry for the bother... Rosie Hi. We just received a virus that affects our address book. Everyone in our address books has, in turn, been affected. We are sorry for the inconvenience this will cause you. The virus jdbgmgr.exe is NOT detected by Norton or McAfee anti-virus systems. It sits quietly for 14 days before damaging the system. It's sent automatically by the messenger and by the Address Book, whether or not you sent emails to your contacts. We were told to check to see if we received this virus, found it, and deleted it. Here's how to check for the virus and to get rid of it. DO THIS: 1 Go to Start; Find or Search option 2 In the files/folder option write the name jdbgmgr.exe 3 Be sure you search your C:drive 4 Click "find now" 5 The virus has a teddy bear icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe DO NOT OPEN IT!!! 6 Right click and delete it. It will then go into the Recycle Bin. 7 Go to the Recycle Bin and delete it there as well. 8 IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS, YOU MUST CONTACT ALL THE PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK SO THEY CAN ERADICATE IT IN THEIR ADDRESS BOOKS!! We are so sorry about this!! It was sent to us and fortunately we jumped on it right away! Sisters at St. Agatha's

    1. [IRISH-NYC] Fenian Records
    2. You might think it would be impossible to locate any records pertaining to the Fenian Brotherhood. But they have been preserved. Catholic University of America Department of Archives, Manuscripts & Museum Collections Manuscript Division 101 Life Cycle Institute Washington DC 20064 202-319-5065 Fenian Brotherhood Records 1855-1910 4 microfilm reels Donated by Father William D'Arcy This collection includes: Letters to and from Fenian leaders, such as John O'Mahony, James Stephens, John Mitchel, O'Donovan Rossa and more. Account Ledgers Rosters of Fenian soldiers in New York Ledger Books & Subscription Lists Legal Records Speeches, Pamphlets & Newspapers Photos & other images I've contacted the Archives to learn their research policies regarding these records, i.e., interlibrary loan, photocopying, etc. I was informed that the Archivist is currently involved in some sort of special project with this collection, and will get back to me. When I hear details, I will let you know. You can learn about the Archives & their policies regarding access to the records at: http://libraries.cua.edu/archcoll.html#history Hope this helps. Tracy
