    1. Re: [IRISH-NYC] Memorial Day
    2. Carolyn & Steve Henkel
    3. Thank you for remembering what Memorial Day should be about - not as a holiday to "officially start summer", but, in reality, as a national day of mourning when those who made the untimate sacrifice and those who served honorably but have now passed away are remembered. That said, the official Memorial Day is not Sunday but, by law, the last Monday in May. That is also the day in which the United States Flag should be flown at half-staff until noon and at full-staff thereafter. Memorial Day was traditionally observed on May 30 before Congress moved it to the last Monday to create a three-day weekend which has helped lead it to be "just another holiday" in many people's minds. A bill to restore Memorial Day to May 30 was filed but is languishing in Congress. Please write your Senators and Representatives if you believe this is a just bill. Finally, please observe the National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 PM Monday. Thanks again for doing something to remind folks of the meaning of Memorial Day. My daughter and I are off to plant flags at the graves of Veteran's in our town. I hope everyone on this list will find their own way to remember and honor our deceased veterans. ----- Original Message ----- From: <GaelEire@aol.com> To: <IRISH-NEW-YORK-CITY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, May 25, 2002 12:22 AM Subject: [IRISH-NYC] Memorial Day > Here in the States, we will be observing Memorial Day this weekend. > Originally called Decoration Day, the last Monday of May is reserved so we > can honor those who gave their lives in the service of their country. > Although Sunday is officially Memorial Day, it is observed on Monday. > > I remember when I was little, Memorial Day was a big deal. 1. [IRISH-NYC] Memorial Day
    2. Here in the States, we will be observing Memorial Day this weekend. Originally called Decoration Day, the last Monday of May is reserved so we can honor those who gave their lives in the service of their country. Although Sunday is officially Memorial Day, it is observed on Monday. I remember when I was little, Memorial Day was a big deal. There were parades that everyone came out for. Everyone flew their flag. Veterans would set up tables along the sidewalks the week prior, selling red poppies. My father was a commander in the VFW. Every Memorial Day, he took us to the local monument for the laying of the wreath. In recent years, Memorial Day has come to symbolize the official kickoff to summer. Stores run big sales and the malls and beaches are packed. We seemed to have forgotten what the day was all about. I think the horrors of September 11 have changed that. Every day, approximately 1,000 W.W.II veterans pass away in this country. There are few W.W.I veterans still with us. Veterans of the Korean and Vietnam Wars are succumbing to cancer and heart disease. Our men and women in uniform are again in harm's way, protecting our cherished freedom. There are the horrific numbers of dead from September 11 - the first victims of this new war. Please take some time out this weekend to remember what Memorial Day is really about. Honor the men and women who have laid down their lives so we can remain free. Visit a National Cemetery to lay a wreath; wear a red poppy; fly your flag. If you know or see a veteran, take the time to thank him or her for all they've sacrificed for us. If you will be flying your flag this weekend, and I hope you will, here are the official guidelines: the flag is to fly at half-staff on Sunday until noon. It is then to be lowered and raised to full-staff. I will be spending Memorial Day at the cemetery, laying a wreath on my father's grave. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. And to all the veterans on our list, I'd like to say, Thank You! I owe you everything. Take care, Tracy

    1. [IRISH-NYC] Origins - Immigration Records
    2. Country of Arrival Records -- Immigration Records Passenger lists vary in content, depending on the time period. Early lists usually do *not* mention a town of residence in the old country, while late 19th/early 20th century passenger lists (in this case Ellis Island) do. If the lists don't give a place of origin in Ireland, they may at least mention the last known residence prior to emigration. This is helpful because it takes your research overseas and into a whole new set of records. What do you do if you don't know the exact date of immigration or your ancestors came into Castle Garden - whose records are *not* indexed? Where do you begin? Usually, the naturalization records will give a date of immigration. Using this date, you can then search the list of vessel arrivals. These arrivals were recorded by the Harbor Master and copies can be found at the LDS, the National Archives and the New York Public Library - just to name a few repositories. The 'Register of Vessel Arrivals at the Port of New York from Foreign Ports' is kept in two separate listings: chronological by date of entry and alphabetical by name of ship. The information it contains is the date of arrival, nationality of the ship, port of departure and sometimes the captain's name. NOTE: The 'Register' is a listing of *all* vessels that sailed into New York Harbor, whether they carried passengers or not. What if you don't have a date of immigration or a ship name? Locating the records isn't impossible, but it will take some time. Work off all the census information you have regarding the year of immigration until you have a window of time to work with. Your ancestor came from Ireland. You will now need to familiarize yourself with the different ports of departure for Irish emigrants for the time period you're interested in. This is where it can become complicated. The major port of departure for *all* of the United Kingdom was Liverpool. Many Irish moved to England seeking employment, so your ancestor could have left directly from Liverpool. Also, by the mid 1880s, most steamships leaving Liverpool stopped at Belfast or Queenstown to pick up passengers. However, if you go to search the 'Register of Vessel Arrivals' for NY Harbor, the list will only tell you the original port of departure. It doesn't list any stops made along the way. You need to view the actual manifest for those details. NOTE: Most of the steamship landings in New York Harbor for the late 1800s are listed as leaving Liverpool! I just want to prepare you for the sheer number of ships you'll face. The major ports of departure for Ireland were Belfast and Queenstown (Cobh). Ships left from other ports in Ireland also, but not on as regular a basis. Once you've strained your eyes and brain and have discovered (hopefully) the correct ship, date of arrival and have checked the corresponding passenger list, then you can order the actual manifest. You will need to send your request to the National Archives - Northeast Region in New York City. When you request a copy of the manifest, be sure to request the entire manifest, rather than just the page your ancestor appears on. This way, you can check to see if other family members emigrated with them! IMPORTANT: The National Archives will *not* undertake a search of passenger lists for Castle Garden without a ship name and date of arrival. The records for this time period are numerous and none of it is indexed. What if your ancestors arrived in New York prior to 1820? Unfortunately, those records no longer exist. The federal government did not require passenger lists to be kept until 1820. There are some pre-1820 passenger lists around for other US ports, but according to the National Archives, none have survived for New York. You will then want to consult the following works - which can be found at the LDS: Filby, William P. "Passenger and Immigration Lists Bibliography 1538-1900." Detroit: Gale Research, 1988. FHL Book # 973 W33p 1988. Filby, William P. "Passenger and Immigration Lists Index." Detroit: Gale Research, 1981. FHL Book # 973 W32p. Passports will be discussed in a later post. Take care, Tracy

    1. [IRISH-NYC] Post 1901 Census - More on ATI Requests
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. My apologies once again for the length of this posting. In the 12 years that I have been coming to Calgary to visit my son and his family, I have managed only once to be here when it did not snow, regardless of the time of year that I was visiting. This trip has not been an exception as on waking up this morning the ground was white. I have had a good reaction to my posting of 18 May 2002 that suggested everyone interested in regaining public access to Post 1901 Census records send Access to Information Requests to Statistics Canada and the National Archives seeking access to the 1906 Census of the Western Provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba). All responses I have had to that posting have been positive. It appears, however, because of some questions asked that some clarification is needed. The reason for making these requests is that Justice Canada lawyers, in their cross-examination of plaintiffs in our Application for Judicial Review, have concentrated their questions on whether or not ATI Requests have been submitted to Statistics Canada and the National Archives for the 1906 Census, and if so, have complaints been submitted to the Information Commissioner when those requests were refused. The impression given by this is that anyone seeking information from these records should be doing so through Access to Information Requests. We wish to accomodate the Justice Canada lawyers by making the requests they seem to think we should be making. The legislation specifies that to be eligible to make a request under Access to Information you must be a resident of Canada. ATI requests may be directed to either Statistics Canada or the National Archives. Preferably both. Each department handles their own ATI requests. As such, each must receive an original request -- not a copy of one sent to the other department. They may, however, be worded similarly. Addresses to send them to are shown below. Each request must be accompanied by a check for $5.00 made out to 'The Receiver General of Canada'. Requests may be made simply by letter, or by using an Access to Information Request form downloadable from http://infosource.gc.ca/Info_4/atip/Request-Frms_e.html Your message need not be lengthy. Say something like the following: "As a family historian and genealogist I have a requirement to view and obtain information regarding my ancestors from Historic Census Records. The Privacy Act of Canada, and Regulations attached thereto, provide that information from Census may be made available to any person or body, for purposes of research, 92 years after collection. This message is to be considered my Request, under the Access to Information Act, for access to schedules of the 1906 Special Census of the Western Provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba). Thank you." Adjust the wording to suit your personal circumstance, but be specific about needing to view the records for the 1906 Census. There is no requirement in the legislation to specify a reason for making an ATI request. At this time we are seeking general, not specific, access to the 1906 Census, so your request should not seek access to any specific individual or family. If you specify an individual name you are likely to be advised how to make a 'Census Pensions Search' at a cost of about $48.00. Because we are seeking general access to the records you need not actually have an individual or family from Alberta, Saskatchewan or Manitoba to make this request. The legislation specifies that you are required by law to receive a response within thirty days of receipt for any ATI Request submitted. Some readers may be deterred by the requirement for submitting a $5.00 check with each request. We expect each and every request for access to the 1906 Census to be denied. My own experience with a denied request was that my check was returned with that denial. My expectation is that with the refusal of our requests, all checks will be returned. I cannot, however, guarantee that this will happen. On receiving a refusal of your request for access to the 1906 Census, a complaint regarding that refusal should be sent to the Information Commission (address below). That complaint should make reference to the Report of the Expert Panel on Access to Historical Census Records, and to a legal opinion of Ann Chaplin of Justice Canada in August 2000. I will post further information regarding this later. It is our hope that those seeking access to Historical Census records will flood Statistics Canada and the National Archives with ATI requests for the 1906 Census. The addresses to send these requests to are: Statistics Canada ATIP Co-ordinator, Pamela White R.H. Coats Building, 25th Floor Tunney's Pasture Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0T6 National Archives of Canada ATIP Co-ordinator, Bill Wood 395 Wellington Street, Room 349 Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0N3 So that we might be able to have some idea of how many ATI requests are made for the 1906 records I ask that you send me a copy of your Request. These may be sent to me by attachment to an email, by fax at (604) 942-6843, or by snail mail to Gordon A. Watts 1455 Delia Drive Port Coquitlam, BC V3C 2V9 Thank you again for your continued support. Gordon A. 1. [IRISH-NYC] Origins - Court Records
    2. Country of Arrival Records -- Court Records Court records can be enormously helpful in determining a county of origin in Ireland due to the fact they often list place of birth, family members and/or property holdings in the old country. If you believe your ancestor may have been a plaintiff, defendant or witness in a court proceeding, then it's worth searching the old records. Court records prior to 1900 are generally not indexed well, while those pertaining to the colonial period can be fairly easy to search. If your ancestor was a laborer or farmer, then the chances of finding him in court records diminish. If your ancestor was professionally employed, your chances of locating information improve. The reason is the same as it is today -- it takes time and money to go to court. If you should locate an ancestor in court records, be sure to review all the documents. The case file, known as the packet, contains the depositions, affidavits and testimonies. It is in the affidavits and depositions that you will find the most useful information, i.e., where are you from/where were you born. Some court records have been microfilmed and can be found at the LDS or ordered through your local Family History Center. For more recent records, you will need to contact the courthouse directly. Take care, Tracy

    2. Daily Star - 23 July 1898 - School News [Teacher appointments] Full List of Those Appointed at Last Meeting. Generous Increase of Salaries Made All Along the Line, and Some Transfers. The school teachers appointed for the Borough of Queens and their salaries for the coming year are given below. The list of names is practically the same as last year, but there have been some transfers. A generous increase in salaries is the principle change. There were some vacancies after making the arrangements, and Superintendent STEVENS made nominations for these at the meeting at Seaside Hotel on Wednesday afternoon. 1. [IRISH-NYC] THE IRISH CHRONICLES - New Newsletter
    2. Good morning..... With the kind permission of your listowner, I am posting the following. New Free Online Newsletter - THE IRISH CHRONICLES I am the listowner of the IRL-CAVAN mail list on Rootsweb. I am also the county coordinator for Irelandgenweb.com for Counties Cavan and Longford. The urls for those counties are in my signature line. I am designing a new FREE online Irish research newsletter dedicated to Irish research anywhere in the world - THE IRISH CHRONICLES. As our Irish ancestors traveled world-wide in their quest to find new homes, this newsletter will be addressing those issues that most of us face when trying to locate where and how and why they left Ireland. The types of work that they did. Where to locate their records, and how to use those resources, etc. There are many things we don't know about them, but with the help of published and new authors who will be submitting articles to the newsletter, we can learn the things we need to know to ferret out that illusive great grandfather, etc. Our early family members traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United States, and South America, to name just a few of the areas they immigrated to. If you would like to subscribe to this new newsletter (first issue will probably be posted about July 1), I have posted subscription information on my two Irish webpages. They are located at: County Cavan, Ireland - http://www.irelandgenweb.com/~cavan/cavan.html County Longford, Ireland - http://www.irelandgenweb.com/~longford/longford.html Scroll down the page until you reach the information about the Newsletter. Just click on the SUBSCRIBE link and an email will pop up addressed to me. Send the email and you will then be subbed to the new newsletter. My goal is that it is published in text format, with a possible website to follow in the future, where you will be able to find past newsletters, along with other interesting tidbits of information, and other articles and links. ADDITIONALLY - I am seeking new authors and already published authors who would be interested in contributing articles with their expertise, knowledge and finesse of Irish research to this newsletter. It will be a great place to forward your writing if you are a new author (along with getting your name recognized as an author and possible future genealogy speaker - one never knows where one can go or where one will end up when doing this genealogy thing we are addicted to - along with some roving reporters to report about Irish websites and write reviews of those sites. IRISH POETRY and IRISH HUMOR and TIPS & TRICKS - I'm also looking for someone to locate and transcribe some of the wonderful Irish Poetry that abounds from our present and latter day ancestors hailing from Ireland. Poetry must be transcribed exactly as it appeared in the publication, and include the name of the author and the date and place of its publication. We don't want to infringe on any copyrights, but we do want to share what great poets we have with Irish heritage. And a wee bit of IRISH HUMOR never hurt anyone. So, I'm also looking for someone to assist me in that area.... good, clean Irish humor, mind ye! If interested in writing for this new newsletter, THE IRISH CHRONICLES, please respond to me privately. If interested in subscribing to the newsletter, please go to the websites listed above to subscribe. I hope you decide to join me in what I'd like to see become one of the premiere free online newsletters dedicated entirely to Irish research. Thanks for your patience in reading this email, and I look forward to meeting each of you online. Sincerely, Denise A.
