I've just been given some reliable information regarding my grandfather Harry Connors. Is there anyone on this list familiar with a Nellie Gaffney and her husband Hugh Gaffney - 1906. Hugh had a sister with the last name King who lived at: 456 West 18th St., Manhattan. Hugh and Nellie were married probably in 1905. thanks and regards....Belinda
Hi Barbara, I noticed that you're searching for CORRIGAN and can't remember if I contacted you before. My great-grandmother, ANNE CORRIGAN married STEPHEN CONNORS at Borrisokane, Tipperary in 1845, their son JAMES, my grandfather, was born near there in 1857. He ended up in CT and in the early 1900's his daughter ANN used to visit their CORRIGAN relatives in NYC. By this time CONNORS had been changed to O'CONNOR. Ann's daughted gave me this info and the only thing she knew about the CORRIGAN family was that they were involved with sounding boards.( a structure behind or over a pulpit, rostrum, or platform to give distinctness and sonority to sound) I understand that they were used at the Metropolitan Opera. I also have a QUINN, I found my GGF PATRICK GAYNOR buried at Calvary and in the same plot was a THOMAS GAYNOR and his wife MARGARET QUINN. I have Margaret''s DC, her parents were JOHN C QUINN and NANCY WARD, all were born in Ireland. I'm looking for more info on CORIGAN in Tipperary and NYC and have more data on MARGARET QUINN if it's of any interest to you. Cheers, Ted Schmitz, Las Cruces, NM
what is an ESB Account?---- http://www.genexchange.org/esb/index.cfm I should have explained what it was, sorry, I apologize to all! Barbara : ) Nancy explained it better than I could have: Dear Barbara: You have taken information from the GenExchange ESB database and posted it to the Irish NYC (Rootsweb) list. Please be aware that this is really not a good thing to do. The GenExchange is a copyrighted site. You certainly can extract the facts, but in this case you have used the copy and paste technique (instead of re-typing just the facts) and have also extracted the notes made by Monica Bennett verbatim. In addition, I do not see any credit given to the site (the GenExchange) as a source or information as to where the information originally comes from (the Emigrant Savings Bank Account Records, microfilm and manuscripts held by the NYPL, NYC). A better way to handle this is to refer people to the site directly for the information. It's wonderful that you found your relatives but please be careful about cutting and pasting materials from other sites and re-posting copyrighted material without permission. Particularly without citing your sources. If you have any further questions about this, please contact me off list. Best regards. Nancy. Nancy Coleman NLColeman@worldnet.att.net

The movie, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio is based on the 1928 (yes, 1928) book by Herbert Asbury. It is currently out (reprinted) in paperback by Thunder's Mouth Press (2001). A worthwhile read. Best regards. Nancy. I was at the movies last night and saw a preview for a movie called "Gangs of New York" that I think many of you will want to see. It is a movie about NYC and the 5 points area during the 1840's to the 1860's. It depicts the gang warfare between the Nativist and the Irish gangs for control of the neighborhoods in lower Manhattan. From the shots shown in the preview the depiction of 5 points, the ships and the South Street Wharf's, all seemed very realistic. The move is set for release at Christmas time. I found a website that the film producers have set up talking about the movie. Please look over the site, because it describes the movie alot better than I have. Here is a link to the site: http://www.thegangsofnewyork.com/ Does anyone have any other movies they can recommend about NYC and emigrants in the mid 1800's? I am sure there must be some movies out there. Thanks, Don McGovern researching: McGovern, 4th Ward of Manhattan, 1849 - 1880 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Hi there - the only information I have is that which I posted. Sorry I can't be of more help!
Greetings All. The following is an article regarding our legal efforts to regain public access to Historic Census records. It is published in the Wednesday 31 July issue of the Tri-City News, a community newspaper for my area, that interviewed me a couple of weeks ago. The article as published has a couple of errors in it that I have been assured will be corrected for the next issue. The errors are that the 1906 Census records should have been released in 1998 rather than 1993, and the numbers of signatures sent should be shown as 50,000 instead of 5,000. Happy Hunting Gordon A. Hi Eddie - You helped me earlier with GREENES in Abbeyside. I have a GREENE in Chicago, father from Waterford, who married a man whose mother was a DALY born in the state of Missouri of Irish parents. Is DALY a common name in Waterford? In Abbeyside? It would be fun to learn their families were from the same neighborhood in Ireland and that the couple (b. 1902 & 1906 1800 miles apart in the USA) never knew that. The Irish GREENE family was Thomas F. GREENE, b. Waterford about 1870, son of Margaret McGrath born in Waterford and James GREENE, birthplace unknown. My earliest DALY is Joseph DALY b. in the US state of Missouri about 1868 and his sister Elizabeth DALY born in Missouri about 1872. maureen, I may have told you before,There were lots of Grene's here in Abbeyside. But none that you mention between 1828-1901. Interestingly, Daly's lived across the road from Greene's at Abbeyside. The Daly's that you mention are almost certainly from Abbeyside. Eddie

I seem to remember seeing something about difficulty getting records from Albany - NY State Dept of Health. I need one now - I have exact date of death in 1953. Sent to NYC DoH and got back a form telling me to send to Albany. Can anyone shed any light on this? Also, how much do they charge? Is there a website? Thanks

I have two letters handwritten by Thomas A. COSTELLO (b. ca. 1852) of the William Costello and Sons tobacco company in Galway, Ireland. The letters are dated 1889 and 1907 and written on the business letterhead. The second letter discusses Thomas's son and daughter who have died and his five living children: William COSTELLO (the eldest, in 'America' ), Charlie COSTELLO (working in the family business), Guy or Goy or Gay COSTELLO (an engineer in Athlone), Joe COSTELLO (an MD in Cardiff, South Wales), and Bess COSTELLO (the youngest & only daughter). I would me happy to mail copies of these handwritten letters to relatives who send SASE. Maureen Costello maureen1036@yahoo.comGet more from the Web.
