I would very much appreciate it if SKS could look up an Obituary for me: Ellen Ryan (Mrs. Mark?) Collins, widowed, lived in NYC, death would have been in 1880-1881, in NYC. I would be grateful. Thank you. L. D. Collins
Does anyone know what ED this address is in and/or what page in the 1880 Census the address appears??
Since many of you have asked -- I ordered the films through Inter Library Loan ($FREE$). It was fascinating to read the articles from the era, too!
** Is anyone familiar with the street/area mentioned in the obituary below? ** Does anyone know the ED? I'm not sure if this is 'where he died' or 'his last place of residence,' but I figure I'll check the 1880 census records... HAYDEN - March 19 [1883], at 627 West 52nd street, NY, Edward HAYDEN, a native of Dublin, aged 38 years.
I found my "needle in a haystack" Edward Hayden in a copy of The Irish American. I thought I'd share the other obituaries that appeared that week: Irish American Newspaper Week Ending March 31, 1883 IRISH-AMERICAN OBITUARY DIED: AIKEN - March 19, in Brooklyn, Mary, the beloved wife of Thomas AIKEN, a native of Newmarket-on-fergus, county Clare, Ireland. Her remains were interred in Holy Cross Cemetery. May she rest in peace. Amen. DUVAL - March 21, at the residence of his parents, 160 Carroll street, Brooklyn, Willim G., son of George and Kate DUVAL, aged 12 years. HI DEB Where can I find out obits for the Irish American. Both my MCDONALD g-grandparent died in NYC 1888, 1892 till now I didn't think any papers listed their obits. Thanks for any help. The answer is yes. Most of the questions seemed to be according to the clerk/Judge sitting at the time. You may get more than you know and theis is nice to have information for your family history even if you do not get any more information. It enhances the paper trail of your family, and are considered prized papers. There are a couple of short cuts you can use, one is to look in FHC files for their film onUS pasports. Many of our ancestors did receive passports after they became citizens. If there is apassport, the INS has all the information regarding when/where of citizenship. Second you can search WWW. jewishgen.org. They have good information on the different courts you can write to in NY to look for citizenship papers. They have very helpful people who answer E-mail questions too. Definitely look for the papers. The cost is but $5.00 when you find which court in NY to write. You can also write to NARA. They are most helpful in making suggestions. Good Luck. I have seen several emails on this list about Declarations of Intent and other Naturalization papers. Some emails have stated that NYC courts in the 1800's did not ask alot of questions of the emmigrant. I have a ancestor that likely was naturalized in the mid 1850's in a NYC court. I am not sure if it will be worth the search not to find much on the papers. What seems to be the general opinion on this? Is it worth the search for naturalization papers in NYC courts in mid 1800's? Don McGovern __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Dear Bob: The area is still there, just north and slightly east of the Municipal Archives a couple of blocks. The area, of course, is nothing like it was back then though. The book I mentioned, which is the basis for the movie, gives a very detailed history of the area. Best regards. Nancy. Hi, I'm looking for a lister who was researching the Woods family of Brooklyn. I was reviewing some old info and was wondering if there would be a connection. Also, I've been in touch with another branch of the Woods family who lived in Brooklyn for a short time around 1850. The father worked as a policeman in Brooklyn. Thanks.
