Greetings All. Since my earlier posting on this, about an hour ago, I have received more than 60 responses. (I wish that my Post 1901 Census postings got this reaction - <]:-) ) Most of these response are of the opinion that the message referred to was a scam, and one suggested that it was not. Some of those responding indicated that they had forwarded the message to a number of security agencies, including the FBI and the Security Section of the US Immigration Services, or suggested that I do so. My thanks to Barney Kaufman, Penny Nicol James, Kelvin MacKavanagh and Kelvin Kean for the following informative URLs http://travel.state.gov/visa_bulletin.html www.us-immigration.org/gclot.htm http://www.ins.usdoj.gov http://www.ins.usdoj.gov/graphics/services/residency/divvisa.htm Whether or not the message I received was (or is) a scam, my earlier caution regarding responding to messages of this type remains in place. Before providing large amounts of information to anyone sending you a similar message do some checking to ensure that the offer it provides, and the source from which it originates, is legitimate. Greetings All. On checking my email this morning I received the following message which I find suspicious. I have no proof that this is a scam, however I feel that if this were a valid message it is unlikely that the US Immigration Services would be using a Hotmail email address. I feel certain that they would be using an address that clearly indicated that it was a valid US government address. For the US Immigration Services to be contacting me directly I feel that I would have had to make prior representations to them myself, which I have never done. I have never had any contact with them. I urge anyone receiving a similar message to use extreme caution in responding to this, or similar messages. They are not only asking for a $25.00 USD processing fee, but are asking for a great deal of personal information that might be used to the detriment of those responding. Happy Hunting Gordon A. Hi Don I have booked marked your e-mail, so I can get the book when I get the chance. My people came from St. Mary's parish (Grand/Attorney sts.) not sure what ward it is in. Maybe the 4th ? all I know is the Williamsburg bridge is in that area now. If you know the correct ward please let me know. I am now reading the "Abandon children of Eve" at the moment. Not sure if I like it yet. The book is historical fiction, was published in 1967, and is available from Barnes & Nobles in the Out of Print books for anywhere from $6 to $40. Not sure why the difference in price... maybe has something to do with the condition of the book. I got a copy for $10 that was an old copy from a library. Had no trouble reading it. I enjoyed the book very much and would recommend it to anyone with ties to the 4th Ward. The book revolves around a young Scottish Sailor named Gavin McInness arriving in NY in 1875. The boat he is on is to stay in NY for only one night, leaving early the next morning. Gavin goes out for look around NY the evening before leaving, gets in a bit of a brawl, and ends up missing his ship. Gavin stays in NY and spends the rest of the book living in the 4th Ward area. I especially liked the books description of South Street and the warf area, the cellar life some immigrants had to suffer, and the gang tensions that existed at that time. Hi , I have launched a new free website containing census records, valuations, and town directories listing all the people who resided in the Lurgan area, including Shankill, Seagoe and the Montiaghs parishes from the 17th century right up to the 1901 census. The site has a search engine in it to ensure quick and prompt research. It also gas many photos old and new of the area and maps giving the old townlands of the area. You can find the site at the address below www.lurganancestry.net Many Thanks, Martin McGoldrick
All: I have been inundated with requests for information about the Irish American Newspaper, but I am certainly no expert on it. I saw it mentioned on a message board some months ago and when I ran into a dead-end trying to learn more about my "Edward Hayden," I figured "it can't hurt to try." In addition to the obits, the articles are well-worth reading. ** I do not have access to the films any more. They had to be returned. ** I would suggest trying any local library -- if they have an Interlibrary Loan Program they can get the films for you. ** The librarian can do a lookup in their system for libraries that carry the films; they can also determine if the dates you need are available and thereby which films to order. ** I don't know what years the paper is available for; I was focused on a particular time period. (Sorry) Next time I will pay more attention to the details! Good luck in your quests!
Hello All......... Some years ago I extracted a series of obituaries from The Irish-American newspaper....they are viewable at the URL below: http://www.nycgen.com/irishobits1.htm I accessed this newspaper (a weekly, by the way) at the New York Public Library on 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue......They have the paper on microfilm, but they do not participate in interlibrary loan......I believe that the New York State Library has some of the films for loan, however---not sure if they have the whole run, though... It should be noted that this newspaper seemed to "skip" posting obituaries for years at a time......that is what I recall, anyway......then, all of a sudden a bunch of obits would be published over a period of time. I have no idea why they followed this practice, but apparently they did! It's a tough paper to read, and the obits were often scattered in all different parts of the paper, so one really has to visually "scan" every page of an issue to make sure that nothing is missed...... Perhaps someday I will continue the project, if time ever permits........
