    1. [IRISH-NYC] Post 1901 Census - Who is my Member of Parliament?
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings all. Judging from the number of messages we receive asking about it, there are a great many people in Canada that do not know who their Member of Parliament is. If you are in this situation check the following URL. http://www.parl.gc.ca/information/about/people/house/PostalCode.asp?Sour ce=SM If the URL wraps around in the message you receive, make sure that you include the whole URL. The end of the line should include everything up to the 'Source=SM' This URL will take you to a Government of Canada website where you can find out who your MP is by doing a search using your six digit postal code, i.e. V3C 2V9. The result when doing a search this way is a picture of your MP with both their Ottawa and Constituency Office addresses. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 1. Re: [IRISH-NYC] Admin Note - Important
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. As I see it there are two different situations here. One where an email message wants you to install a foreign language font. You can pretty well bet that these messages are SPAM, At least in my personal experience every one like this received has been SPAM. As another poster stated, if you click cancel on the box to install the new font it goes away and you can simply delete the message. Receiving a message that has a from address and subject line, and the body of the message is blank, you can pretty well bet that it is the result of someone having your e-mail address in their computer being infected by the Klez virus. The message body is blank because your anti-virus program (in my case Norton) is up to date and has deleted the text that it has determined carries a virus. You can determine this for sure by opening up the full headers of the message. Normally, after all the header information and before the body of the message will be a notation that your anti-virus program has deleted the text message. Delete this message as well and do not worry about it. Because I am a high-profile user of email and my email address is in a great many PCs I get several of these a day, sometimes more than a dozen. Attempting to contact the owner of the infected machine is normally futile because the virus forges the 'from' and 'return to' addresses. Happy Hunting. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Genie Coats" <coatsgenie@hotmail.com> To: <IRISH-NEW-YORK-CITY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, September 06, 2002 8:46 AM Subject: Re: [IRISH-NYC] Admin Note - Important So what are we supposed to do with it? ----- Original Message ----- From: Dora Smith Sent: Friday, September 06, 2002 9:32 AM To: IRISH-NEW-YORK-CITY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [IRISH-NYC] Admin Note - Important I also have been getting this notice and have been ignoring it. 3. Hi I get <I've been getting a number of messages that ask if I want to install Chinese language> also. It's been going on for about a week. First it asks me if I want to download something or other. I click on cancel (that's like in Pronto!) and there is a new message after the download screen goes away. The message appears to be legit but usually has a different font than any other that I get. Who knows? 1. [IRISH-NYC] 9/11 and the Five Points Dig
    2. Hi everyone, Many television shows are now beginning to air with the one-year anniversary of September 11 approaching. I wanted to share some information with you that I learned from one of the documentaries. While we are left breathless and speechless by the loss of human life at the Twin Towers that horrific morning (and rightly so), many of us may not realize that historic documents and artifacts were also lost. We chatted not too long ago about the neighborhood of Five Points - the infamous Irish slum that is now the site of Foley Square. In 1991, an archaeological dig was undertaken there and many artifacts uncovered. These finds were housed at the Twin Towers. Heritage Preservation of Washington DC, estimates that more than one million artifacts from the Foley Square dig were lost. 'One of the most important archaeological finds in the history of Lower Manhattan,' noted the group. You can read Heritage Preservation's article on the lost artifacts, including finds from the African burial ground, at: http://www.heritagepreservation.org/NEWS/Cataclysm.htm You can take a virtual tour of the archaeological dig of Five Points at: http://r2.gsa.gov/fivept/fphome.htm I hope I have not offended anyone by mentioning this loss. I, too, lost loved ones on September 11, and mean absolutely no disrespect to them or their families. Take care, Tracy IRISH-NEW-YORK-CITY list admin

I got a felling that we're gonna find ole Josie Quinn McCarthy Thanks to all Jim McCarthy Upland << Forwarded from cpurcell1@cox.net : Hi Jim; I took another direction trying to get information about your grandmother's career at Gimbel's in NYC. I found a website that collected historical information on the retail industry, especially those well-known store names that fell by the wayside. The person I communicated with could offer no help, but suggested contacting the NY papers, which he thought might have a 'companion' story about your grandmother. I would have to hazard a few guesses about papers that were in business in 1917-19 who are still around, but the NY Times would be on the top of the list. I don't know when the Post and News and World Telegraph were in business, but perhaps there's a repository of stories at the NY Public Library on Fifth and 41st-42nd Streets. I'd even hazard a guess that somewhere there is a microfilm/microfiche if one or more of the papers did a story. I'll keep looking for some thread and let you know what, if anything, I dig up. 3. Hello Tracy, I thought you might want to know that I also got the "Drop Down"-download box to install Chinese Characters. I press Cancel & it goes away. I have had it happened a few times while on this List! It is very strange, if not spooky! :) Bye, Cath

I checked the box that says "don't ask me again" - so maybe it's done. I don't know if that's why you've been getting the odd things. 2. Hi Terry, Are these messages about installing Chinese characters coming from the list? Do they have the Irish-NYC prepend on it? I haven't received any of that. All of my list mail is coming to me in symbols. I thought it may just be another AOL problem, but I'm not so sure. Take care, Tracy

    3. Hi, I've been getting a number of messages that ask if I want to install Chinese language. I've said "No" each time - but can't figure why the Irish list would need Chinese?
