There is a fascinating article online, written in 1862 by James Turner of New York's 'Irish-American' newspaper. Under the pen name Gallowglass, Turner reported on the battle of Antietam for the newspaper. The reprint is courtesy of The Wild Geese, and can be found at: http://www.thewildgeese.com/pages/turnpt1.html You will also find a brief bio on Turner, a native of County Louth. If you are in the area and have the chance this weekend, you may wish to attend the Greater Danbury Irish Festival, in Danbury, Connecticut. The festival is sponsored by the Ancient Order of Hibernians and runs from Sept. 19 through Sept. 22 at the Ives Concert Park at Western Connecticut State University's West Side Campus. Entertainment includes the Tipperary Knights, Eileen Ivers and Andy Cooney. There will also be bagpipes, step dancing, ceilis, cultural exhibits and stuff for the kiddies. You can get more details (including directions) by calling 203-730-8211. If anyone is able to attend, I hope you will tell us all about it! Have a great weekend, Tracy IRISH-NEW-YORK-CITY list admin
Hi Victoria, Where in New York did your Lynchs live? I have two separate Lynch lines in Brooklyn. One line arrived in Brooklyn in 1898 from Pennsylvania. Prior to their immigration (through Canada), they lived in Yorkshire. The other line arrived in NYC around 1883 from Ireland. (County unknown.) By 1888, they had moved to Brooklyn. Do the time frames and boroughs match your Lynchs? Take care, Tracy
Forwarded from irishlass12@juno.com : Dear Listers It has come to my attention that my two uncles John and Hubert Leonard arrived in NY City on Feb 4, 1904 and were going to their sister, Mary Leonard, at 584 5th Ave, NYC. I do not think she lived there but was probably a servant in someone's home. If anyone could look up this address and send me the name, I'd appreciate it. Legend has it that she worked for the Harriman family after arriving in New York. That may be their address. Thanks so much, Mary Sheridan Swatta, Des Moines, IA
My grandmoter was a Donnelly by birth (1894.. I think anyways) in Milltown, Co. Galway, Ire this part I know for sure. Hi Pat; You will probably get an e-mail from my cousin Rose Ann, if she spotted your mention of Mahon in your St. V. dePaul e-mail. We have Mahons and they came from Ireland and they are buried in Calvary Cemetery in Long Island City. St. V. dePaul may not have been (?) their parish, but we certainly had a covey of Mahons. Our Mahons (date of death) are as follows: Martin Mahon May 4 1870 Age 38 Maggie Mahon Oct. 19 1874 Age 8 Annie E. Mahon July 22 1881 Age 20 Ann Mahon May 26 1888 Age 53 I don't know whether this is any help, if there is a connection or what. It is, however, another good opportunity to connect on this thread with fellow Irish. I hope there's a connection and we can trade info. If not, maybe my cousin unraveled the other Mahons when she was looking for our gang and can pass it along. Hi everyone, We've got another run of list posts that have a Chinese character prompt and/or people are receiving blank emails or emails containing symbols. I wanted to let you all know that we know what the problem is and are currently working at the solution. There's nothing to worry about. This isn't the result of a virus. Briefly, what is happening is that an email was sent in the wrong character set. Anyone who responds to that original email (by hitting Reply, Reply All or Reply in Same Format), picks up the incorrect charset. Some ISPs provide a prompt, asking you to download the charset, while others receive blank emails or emails containing symbols. While we are correcting the problem, we ask that no one hit the Reply button on the '19th Ward RC Church' thread. This is the thread where the charset is in Chinese. If you are going to respond on that thread, I ask that you please start a brand new email. I would like to thank all of you for your help and cooperation in this matter. You've been very patient and understanding. Take care, Tracy IRISH-NEW-YORK-CITY list admin
My experiences with St. V. de Paul were very different. Marie was great but had no time to look anything up in the two years that I spent sending money and letters. I have come to the conclussion that I will have to fly out and look myself, which Marie assures me is possible. It is such an old parish it is a shame that someone doesn't help them computer index their records. Pam Jeter researching: KING,MCCUE, BRIDGEWOOD, EGLESTON, McDANIELS all Williamsburgh
Hi Larry Thanks for the note. Maybe we can find a connection. My Mahons are also in Calvary. Patrick Mahon was b. in 1837 in east Galway to Martin Mahon and Bridget Donnellen. I've been there - visited the parish. After serving for 2 years in the Royal Irish Constabulary, Patrick went to someplace in England in the early 1860s. While in England, he and his wife, Mary Ann Murray, had 2 children, Martin and Mary. In 1871 they arrived in Brooklyn and settled in St V.'s parish.... and there they remained. My g'mother, Bridget / Delia, was born in 1872 and married my g'father, James Wood, in 1903 at St. V.'s. Patrick didn't have any brothers. However, when he arrived in Brooklyn he was living in the same building as his Donnellen cousin. Sooooo, there may have been Mahon cousins in the area that I haven't learned of. I find it interesting that we both have "Martin" in the family. Looking forward to hearing from you again. This parish's secretary has a soft spot in her heart for family historians. She is well organized, and on Tuesdays she concentrates on researching the registers and preparing certificates for the good priest to sign. St Vincent's, located in the Williamsburgh section, was established in 1860 and was primarily Irish and German for a good number of years. So, if you have good reason to think that your have records to be found at St. V's, do write to the parish sec'y: Marie Petitto at the parish office: 167 N. 6th St., Brooklyn 11211. If Marie can locate your records, please know that a contribution to the parish would be very much appreciated. Only about 100 parishioners attend Sunday Mass these days, and the future of the parish is not certain. Let's help them out! My Mahon family arrived from Ireland in 1871 and were members of the parish until at least 1914. Pat Wood Fircrest, WA
