http://www.workhouses.org.uk/ yahoo sent out this link and the description: If you're familiar with the term "workhouse," you most likely read about it in a Dickens' novel in which the workhouse was portrayed as a foul, squalid place run by cruel overseers. This site, however, looks at the workhouse as a fascinating mix of social history, politics, economics, and architecture. Learn how the 1601 act established parish-based relief for the poor, and then read about the "new" poor laws of 1834 that turned the workhouse from a simple place of employment into a serious determent for becoming destitute in the first place. Use the lists and maps of poor-law unions to view photos, floor plans, and links to detailed records of workhouses. Check out the Workhouse Life page for an insightful look into the rules and regulations, daily schedule, punishments, clothing, diet, and types of work found in the houses. The workhouse may have seemed a fate worse than death at the time, but this site brings these institutions and the people who lived in them to life.
My apologies to listowners in advance for posting this off-topic (and sensitive) message to your list. Readers PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS MESSAGE ON THE LIST!! ============================= Greetings All. In the last 24 hours there seems to have been a tremendous upsurge in transmission of virus carrying messages. During that period, at least 40% of the messages I have received have been transmitted by PCs infected by possibly a couple of new viruses currently making the rounds. With the number of email I receive daily, 40% makes for a great number of messages, and an equal number of people whose PCs are infected. Many of these messages will appear to come from a mail list to which you do not belong, or from someone you do not know, or have never communicated with before. Many, but not all, of those I have received seemed to come from overseas mail lists. They may or may not show an attachment. They may appear to contain an incomplete message. For information on the viruses that are currently making the rounds please check the following websites: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.bugbear@mm.h tml http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.opaserv.worm .html http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1105-960139.html If the message you receive wraps these URLs, make sure you utilize the full line ending in .html PLEASE, people. Keep your anti-virus programs updated on a daily basis and do at least weekly scans of your PC to ensure you are not infected. These precautions will greatly reduce the proliferation of malicious viruses. For those using Microsoft Internet Explorer and Outlook or Outlook Express (as I do) I recommend taking advantage of the frequent free security updates available for download from Microsoft. My apologies once more to listowners for posting this off topic message. Listers, PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS MESSAGE ON THE LIST. If you feel an uncontrollable (although unnecessary) urge to respond to this message, please do so privately. Do not feel it necessary to respond to this message -- just take the necessary precautions to protect yourself, and others, by ensuring your PC is not infected. Gordon A. Please feel free to use the site for that is why I built it. the address is http://groups.msn.com/Fullam,Fullem,Fulham,Venners,Stjohn,Miller I am still trying to find information on Robert Fullam or Fullem who was born in County Cork Ireland in 1825 and Imigrated to the United States about 1850 1860 he was married to a Julia maiden name unknown and whether or not she was born in Ireland is also unknown. I can be reached at thetribe@catskill.net my name is TOM
To find an address of someone in another place, you can use a number of different search engines or sites. What I usually do is use GOOGLE for a search like that. Put the name of the person in quotes and then after the name and quotes write the town and the state in the search box, hit enter. It will give you any listed people that are under that name in that town (unless they have listed under initials, etc.) Sometimes you have to play around with the name, using variations in case they listed under the wife, etc.
Hi For genealogy reasons I'm looking for the address in ILL. I have the name and town, zip. but there may be more than one party of that name. I want to write them all to find my connection. Help. Bob McDonald
Hi ...Anyone on this list looking for a Patrick Power(s) born in Ireland, I guess may be 1819?? married Mary Ann Oneil on 9 Sept.1848 in the Church of Notre-Dame-de-Quebec in Quebec city. Mary Ann Oneil was born in Quebec her parents were born in Ireland. After their marriage they lived in St.Roch,12 Park Lane,Quebec and attended St Patrick's R.C.Church. Children were Michael E Power(s) born 1851?, William R.Power(s) born 1852-54?, (may have been a cousin not sure yet) both came to Buffalo,NY around 1869 and 1871, Ellen Born 1853?, Margaret born 1859?, Patrick born 1861? died 1/1864 Mary Power(s) died on18 April 1871. Patrick married Mary Julie Buckingham in the parish of St.Roch,Quebec on 7 Sept. 1872 Mary's parents were Owen O'Neil and Margaret Moran, born in Ireland Patrick's parents were Michael Power(s) and Honoria Hassett, born in Ireland Haven't been able to trace Patrick or 2nd wife Mary Buckingham or siblings Margaret, Ellen, Patrick after 1871 Canadian census.Sibling Michael my gr-grand father came to Buffalo,NY in 1869 died 8/1924. Not sure if William was his brother or cousin, for awhile was almost sure he was his brother.William came to Buffalo,NY about 1871-72 died 1907 married to Mary Gottleman about 20 July 1881. They had 8 kids. Their first daugther Margaret Power was my God-Mother. William's parents may be Robert Power and Mary Morne? The last info I can find of Patrick Power is 1881 Canadian census of a Patrick Power 59 yrs old in the Palais Ward of Quebec City may have been a convent with numerous individuals. As with with all family research I'm not 100 % sure this is all correct. If any one is researching this same line I'd like to hear from you, and exchange info Thanks, Norm Hamilton hamilton50@adelphia.net

Hi again, First let me apologize for my post regarding the Civil War coming to the list late. My mail seems to be on some sort of delay. The Civil War series started Sunday night and continues through Thursday night. Please do NOT delete anything on your computer because an email tells you to do so. Install and run an anti-virus software and be sure to update it regularly. If you receive an email about a virus, please be sure to check it out first. Symantec has a detailed listing of all viruses and virus hoaxes. As Jim stated, this list is presently clean. If you have any questions or concerns regarding a possible virus, please contact Jim or myself off-list. We're here to help. Now, let's get back to business! Thank you and take care, Tracy IRISH-NEW-YORK-CITY list admin
Dear List, A good rule of thumb to follow; first of all, subscribe or run an anti-virus program from a disc that is legitimate. Then, if you have any questions regarding a "new" virus running around, go to the company that provided the anti-virus program and find out what the virus is and how to "cure" it. Don't trust strangers!!! That is like someone getting a call at midnight and having that stranger tell that person to go to their refrigerator and check to see if the light bulb is working. Remember, people on lists are not telling people to delete anti-virus programs. When you are sick, you go to the doctor. When you have a virus, you go to the anti-virus company. Enough said. Best wishes, Tom Crane
The Teddy Bear virus email is a hoax -- it has been around for months. Do not delete the file!
I already did it. How do I fix it. I know you are trying to help everyone, but it is irresponsible to pass this type of information along without checking it out first. There is more on that hoax page and others on this hoax. Let's get back to NYC genealogy. http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/jdbgmgr.exe.file.hoax.html >From the above comes the following: Type: <A HREF="http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/refa.html#hoax">Hoax</A> This is a hoax that, like the<A HREF="http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/sulfnbk.exe.warning.html"> SULFNBK.EXE Warning hoax</A>, tries to persuade you to delete a legitimate Windows file from your computer. The file that the hoax refers to, Jdbgmgr.exe, is a Java Debugger Manager. It is a Microsoft file that is installed when you install Windows. It has a teddy bear icon as described in the hoax: CAUTION: Jdbgmgr.exe, like any file, can become infected by a virus. One virus in particular, <A HREF="http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.efortune.31384@mm.html">W32.Efortune.31384@mm</A>, targets this file. Norton AntiVirus has provided protection against W32.Efortune.31384@mm since May 11, 2001. NOTE: If you have already deleted the Jdbgmgr.exe file, some Java applets may not run correctly. This is not a critical system file. The file version may vary with your operating system and version of Internet Explorer. If you want to restore the file, read the instructions in the How to restore the Jdbgmgr.exefile section at the end of this document.
Do NOT delete the teddy bear icons unless you want your computer to not run properly!!!! It is a hoax!
I found three little teddy bears and followed the instructions and deleted them. I have only been on this list for about 48 hours.
