Greetings All FYI, the following statement by MP Murray Calder, our champion in the House of Commons, was made during Members Statements on Wednesday, 9 October 2002. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Watts gordon_watts@telus.net Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, BC http://globalgenealogy.com/Census en français http://globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index_f.htm ======================================= Murray Calder, M.P., S.O. 31, October 9, 2002 Mr. Speaker, there are about 7.5 million Canadians engaged in genealogy. This is one of our most popular hobbies. Thousands of genealogists, historians and medical researchers have asked the House to allow access to post-1901 census records. I was delighted last week to hear the House Leader say that the government plans to introduce legislation this fall to allow researchers access to these records after 92 years. This move is very welcome. I note that 162 members of this House are now on record as supporting their release. The census records up to and including 1901 have been a very valuable source for researchers. These are available on microfilm through archives and libraries across the country. I urge the government to ensure that later census records be just as accessible to researchers.
Thanks Tracy... I'll keep that in my files for reference... Cheers, Jan(patches) This! is my site: http://www.citlink.net/~coral4
If you are having problems locating an individual in the Irish Civil Registration Indexes, you may want to keep the following in mind: 1. Place names listed in the indexes are for districts. A city may be divided into several districts, while in the countryside, several villages may belong to one district. 2. Some events simply were not registered, even though it was required by law. 3. The years 1864-1870 have separate supplemental indexes for births and deaths. 4. Late registration of a birth or death will be found at the end of the index. (A separate section.) 5. There was no common spelling of surnames, so be prepared to search for different spellings. Also, surnames with prefixes (such as 'O' or 'Mc') may be indexed without the prefix. 6. These indexes were hand-written and do contain spelling and/or transcription errors, not to mention missed entries. 7. The events are indexed by the date they were registered, NOT by the date the event took place. So a birth that took place in December, may not have been registered until January. Be sure to search forward. 8. Some marriages are indexed only by the name of one spouse. 9. In the marriage index, a woman's surname may be the surname from a previous marriage, NOT her maiden name. 10. If the family provided the information, such as the age at death, it may be incorrect. 11. Many deaths were simply registered as 'unknown.' 12. If a child was born before the parents married, be sure to search under the mother's maiden name. 13. Some children were not named by the time their birth was registered, so they may be listed as either 'male' or 'female.' If you still can't find your ancestor in the indexes, then you may need to contact the church they belonged to. On another note, the LDS in Salt Lake City has the following on microfilm: 1. Marriage and death certificates for Ireland and Northern Ireland prior to 1871. 2. Birth certificates for Ireland and Northern Ireland from 1864 through March 1881 and from 1900 through 1913. 3. Birth certificates for the Republic of Ireland from 1930-1955. 4. Birth certificates for Northern Ireland from 1922-1959. Hope this helps! Take care, Tracy
Hi Tracy... I would be interested in receiving your tips...Thank you for the info posted earlier... Cheers, Jan(patches) This! is my site: http://www.citlink.net/~coral4
Tracy, Thank you for the information on the maps of Ireland. I look at them and found Drumhome in County Donegal. My grand father was born there. He was born in 1864 to Thomas MULLEN and Bridget TRAVIS. I have not been able to locate any records so far. But am very happy to locate the area on the map. Thanks again. Nan
You can view Lewis' maps of 1839 Irish counties online. The maps are quite large, so it will take some time to download. There are also a few maps of 1920 Belfast. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/tomals/Irish_maps_of_S_Lewis_1839.htm Take care, Tracy
This is probably more than you ever wanted to know about Irish Civil Registration (LOL), but here goes: The government began registering all non-Catholic marriages on April 1, 1845. ALL Irish births, deaths and marriages were registered beginning on January 1, 1864. Prior to these dates, records of births, deaths and marriages were kept by the church. The indexes prior to 1878 are arranged alphabetically by year. After 1878, they are alphabetical, but divided by quarter. The index will give you the following information: individual's name, district, volume and page number for the registration entry. (Death indexes list the age at death.) Birth indexes for the Republic of Ireland after 1927, also give the mother's maiden name. The Civil Registration Indexes can be found at the LDS. (They go up to 1958/1959.) I have a list of 'tips' for searching the indexes that I'd be happy to send to the list if interested. Take care, Tracy
I have seen birth records for Ireland for the 1880's. The ones that are divided into the four quarters. What is the earliest Irish birth and marriage records that exist? Thanks Mario
I have a Mary Maher married to John Walsh.Only have info on her descendents. They arrived late 1850's .Lived Manhattan on lower East side. Gloria
Please send all replies to teresatichy@hotmail.com I am looking for info on My Great Grandfather's family. The last name is Meagher(Irish spelling) Maher(American spelling) . Any info would help. My e-mail address is teresatichy@hotmail.com Thank-You
Did you check to see if the manifest that came up was actually for the ship and the dates it said it was???? That ia a major problem with Ellis Island. They mix up the manifests and what you see is not what you think you are getting. Greetings All. Ronald J. Duhamel: b. 2 March 1930, d. 30 September 2002 It is with regret that we have learned of the recent passing of Senator Ronald J. Duhamel. We ask that those seeking access to Post 1901 Census records refrain from sending further requests for support to his email or snail mail addresses. His name will shortly be removed from the Senators Scoreboard and his position will be shown as vacant. Gordon A. Greetings All. Some might wonder with the announcement on 3 October 2002, regarding the intention of government to bring down legislation dealing with public access to 92-year old Census records, if we will be continuing with our legal action. The answer to the question is a quick, resounding YES!! While the intention to bring down legislation has been announced, it remains to be seen if it meets our requirements and expectations. Senator Lorna Milne continues to work to see that it does, however our legal action is necessary to keep those drafting the legislation 'honest'. What we seek is the SAME UNRESTRICTED ACCESS to Post 1901 Census records that we currently have for records up to 1901. NO STRINGS ATTACHED. We have tried at every opportunity to convey this to the powers that be. Our legal action will continue! Our Applicants' Records has been filed. The Respondents' Records are due on or before Oct. 19 or 20. As soon as Lois receives both Records from the opposition, she will requisition a hearing. It is then up to the Court as to when that hearing will be scheduled. We will continue to keep you posted on anything that happens. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Hello Everyone, After determining at the Ellis Island Site that my grandmother arrived there (from Ireland).. when I attempt to view the "actual ship manifest," the pages for my grandmother & family are not there! (On numerous occasions I have searched many, many pages before & after the pages in question). Would anyone have a suggestion as to how I might obtain the actual ship manifest, with my missing pages? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cath

Greetings All. With a letter from Patricia Sears, MP Scott Reid (Lanark - Carleton) loses his Red X of opposition and is awarded a Gold Tick of Support. Scoreboard totals currently stand at: House of Commons For: 162 Against: 3 Non-committal: 60 No answer: 74 Senate For: 36 Against: 3 Non-committal: 18 No answer: 40 With the long awaited announcement that the Government will introduce legislation regarding access to 92-year old Census records we have taken a giant step forward. Our job, however, is not yet completed. We need to continue to write low-key letters to our elected and appointed officials requesting, and encouraging, support for legislation that gives us exactly the same unrestricted access to records after 1901 that we currently have for those up to 1901. Additionally, we do not wish to see on the schedules of future Census any check-box option that would create a very fragmented history for those seeking information in the future. Before writing, check the Scoreboards to learn the position of those to whom you write. Thank those with Gold Ticks for their past support and request that they continue that support. For the others, politely and respectfully request that they give full consideration to the issues relating to Census and seek their supportive response. Do not forget to forward to me any responses received that differ from the positions shown on the Scoreboard. Without your input I have no way of updating the information shown there. Thank you all for your support. With your continued support we will achieve the goal we seek. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. MILNE DELIGHTED AS GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES IMMINENT RELEASE OF POST-1901 CENSUS RECORDS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Ottawa - October 3, 2002 Senator Lorna Mine (Lib - Peel County) was pleased and relieved this morning at the government's announcement that it will introduce legislation this fall to allow for the release of historic census records. "The years of hard work by thousands of grassroots Canadians has finally paid off," she exclaimed. "The government has listened carefully to the arguments that the Canada Census Committee has been making for four years and has come to the same conclusion - that historic census records are a fundamental part of Canada's historic record that must be made available to the public." The government's announcement came at the National Press Club this morning when Government House Leader Don Boudria laid out the government 's legislative agenda. Minister Boudria stated that the government will be introducing legislation to allow for the release of 92-year old census records for historic research purposes. Although the announcement was made by Minister Boudria, Milne was very quick to give all the credit on the file to Industry Minister Alan Rock, who is responsible for Statistics Canada. "From the first day of his appointment as Industry Minster in January, Minister Rock has taken this issue very seriously and has devoted an enormous amount of time to the file," Milne explained. "The government would not be in any position to make this announcement today if it wasn' t for the fact that he cares as much about this issue as I do, and he was willing to take the fight directly to the cabinet table." The government has not yet released a draft of the legislation, but that is not normally done until it is introduced in the House of Commons. "Sometimes the devil is in the details," Milne noted. "But I am confident that the major barriers to the release of post-1901 census information have been removed. I intend to work closely with Minister Rock over the next few weeks to ensure that the details are worked out properly." For more information, please contact Jeff Paul, Policy Advisor to the Hon. Lorna Milne at 613-947-7695. - 30 - Gordon A. Greetings All. Let the bells ring out and the banners fly! It's too good to be true, I know, but... ...our efforts are starting to pay off! I received a wake up call from the Honourable Senator Lorna Milne this morning. She called to advise me that the Federal Government of Canada hs finally recognized the concerns of genealogists and historians insofar as regaining public access to Historic Census records is concerned. It is OFFICIAL. The Honourable Don Boudria, Minister of State and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons made an address to the Newsmakers Breakfast this morning (3 October 2002) at the National Press Club. The topic of his address was "The Government's Fall Legislative Program". On page four of an eight page summary of notes, Mr. Boudria noted, in relation to the coming months... "Other legislation will also be introduced respecting: -- The release of 92-year old census records for historical research purposes -- which responds to recommendations and work done by parliamentarians in the House of Commons and Senate such as MP Calder and Senator Milne;" Finally!! We are pleased that in making this announcement, Mr. Boudria saw fit to recognize the work of our champions in the Senate and House of Commons, Senator Lorna Milne and MP Murray Calder. A word of caution. Our work is not yet finished. Nor will it be finished until such time as the legislation referred to has been introduced, gone through the hoops in the House of Commons and the Senate, and has received Royal Assent to be passed into law. We have made a giant step forward in our effort to regain access, and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel. We look forward to viewing the legislation mentioned by Mr. Boudria and hope that our concerns do not get lost in the details. We must be vigilant to ensure that such legislation meets our concerns and provides the same access to Post 1901 Census records that we currently have for records up to 1901. Senator Milne assured me that she will continue to work on our behalf in this regard. Take a breather. Savour the moment. Then send a low-key message to your MP and Senator seeking their support for this legislation when it is introduced. Stress that you seek the same access to Post 1901 records that we currently have for earlier Census, and that we do not view (as indicated by another Minister there may be) a 'check-box option' on the Census forms as desireable. Our thanks to all for your past and future support. Without the support of all of you, nothing would be happening. Have a GREAT day!!!!!!! Gordon A.
