    1. Surname HANLEY
    2. Roy Michel
    3. I'm researching my wifes, mothers family, HANLEY. Her GGrandfather, Joseph HANLEY, came to America, and married in NYC. His bride was previously married and I have not found out what it was. They had two children that were born in NY, Catherine HANLEY 1863 and Ann 1869. They moved to Cranston, RI, and their son Joseph was born in 1870. Would civil records be created from these births? Where would catholic baptismal records be kept? Thank you...........Roy Michel

    1. Irish Catholics in NYC
    2. Roy Michel
    3. I have a couple questions. First, if an Irish Catholic couple wanted to get married in about 1858 to 1863, would they have to apply to the NYC civil authorities for a licence? Second, where would church records be kept? I was just at the local Mormon Family History Center and noticed that not many Irish are listed in city marriage records. Thank you...........Roy Michel

    3. Hi Marge My Great Grandfather was James McAleer b abt 1847 and I am pretty sure that he had a brother John b abt 1845 and a brother Charles b abt 1856. John & Charles came to live in Belfast. Their father was James McAleer. My Ggrandfather James seems to have been back and forward to the US a couple of times at least in the 1880's and when his twins were born (1882)their birth certificates gave the father's residence as Massachusetts, USA. Occupation "Hackler". I have hunted CofI records looking for births/deaths/marriages but so far have drawn blank. Trouble is I have no information about where in Monaghan so it is a long job! 1. HELP !!!
    2. Thomas Crane
    3. As I slipped and stumbled through the darkness I suddenly felt myself falling. That is when I started to panic. I flailed around trying to grasp for anything that might slow my fall and then out of nowhere a hand caught hold of mine and stabilized what I knew would most certainly be my having been swallowed by the vast pit beneath me. My legs began kicking around as I tried to plant my feet on something solid and then suddenly my foot took hold. The hand held fast to my own and I clung to it praying that it would not let go as it drew me up ever so slowly and it enabled me to began to crawl out of what I considered would be my ever lasting tomb. Once I reached solid ground, a sliver of light shone through the walls of the cavern into which I had stumbled. That is when I caught hold of the shadow of the being that had held my hand throughout my whole perilous ordeal. As the words of gratitude began to stammer out of my trembling lips I tried to give thanks as best as I could to that someone who had given me such great assistance and brought me back to what I had thought would be my most certain doom. That is when the shadowy figure turned and began to fade into the darkness that surrounded both of us. As the figure moved away, I saw it's head turn and the words tumbled back to where I was left standing completely exhausted and shaking. "No problem, Mate. Always glad to help a fellow genealogist." You provide an invaluable service to all of us, and I can't thank you enough. You guys are awesome! I also couldn't agree more that the smallest bit of information can open doors in your research. Sometimes something as seemingly insignificant as what a relative said in passing, can help tumble that brick wall. Or add meat to the bones of your research. I actually began to bring down my own Cassidy brick wall because of something a relative once said that the family never believed. It took me 15 years of genealogy research before I even thought to pursue that avenue, and wouldn't you know, that was the right road to go down! I also love reading everyone's family stories. Please don't feel shy on this list or intimidated. We're a cyber family and a pretty nice list. The Irish are pretty decent people! (So are New Yorkers!) Tipperary and works as a railroad laborer. The other is a carpenter and arrival date looks like 1850 (writing is very small). Do you happen to have anyother clues regarding Patrick that can help me to help you?
