    1. Re: [IRISH-NYC] Patrick Farrington--Needle in a Haystack
    2. Patrick died before wife, so the immigration date in his obit is more likely to be accurate; hers was probably estimated by her children. Do you have his naturalization papers? Do you have the ship he arrived on? Do you have anything besides the obits? If they married 1849-1855, the probably had at least one child born in NYC. Have you checked Emigrant Savings bank for him? Do you know his parents' or siblings names? I wil be sending you a list of Patrick Harringtons for the only years I can access. When you get them go to google.com, and type in the street address like this fabricated one: "29 Mulberry St NY NY" and take it to the Yahoo map. Get the zip code off each map, for each address. The zip code may lead us to churches for marriage or fist child. One step at a time. 3. Being that I am new to the list and an O'Donnell I was wondering about Red Hook?? Where is it? What is it? Sorry for sounding so ignorant. My O'D family was somewhat large -- I know my grandfather Lester had brothers and supposedly Michael and Mary Dineen O'D came over with family ie brothers although I don't know if they were hers, his or both. Thank you! 3. I'll try posting my needle in a haystack once again. Maybe this will ring a bell with someone. My gr-gr-Grandfather was Patrick Farrington, b. abt. 1818 in Ireland (where??) According to his Indiana obit, he came to NYC about 1839 (when, where???) He lived in NYC and married Mary Magher/Manghan/Meagher (b. May 1830-35 Ireland), (when, where??) I have no hints when he/they came to NY, where they lived, when/where they married, or when they left (or why). Does this ring a bell for anyone? Any clues gladly accepted! Bonnie in Chicago

    1. Irish Police in NYC
    2. Kathleen
    3. I was wondering about the Irish in the NYC police department. My grandfather Lester Aloyisius O'Donnell was a policeman for many, many years - a mounty I think they called him. He met my step grandmother from what I understand in Central Park while riding his horse and trying to rescue her from a purse snatcher, although it seems she handled it well enough on her own. Thank you for any help. 1. O'Donnell, Dineen, Harrigan, Kerner, etc.
    2. Kathleen
    3. Greetings from The beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota! I am new to this list but am posting the same thing as on the NYC list so I hope some of you who are on multiple lists don't mind. My name is Kathleen O'Donnell Grone -- I live in Deadwood and live in the midst of the infamous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally or "Bike Week" as they call it here. The bikes have already begun to arrive although the big week isn't until August. I have only lived her since August -- Other names I am researching in relation to the O'DONNELLS are HARRIGAN, DINEEN, KERNER (a german name), CREEN, JAMES, MINER (not positive about this connection to Creen), and WEIR I really want to learn more about my family-- my ancestors. I have been to NY and NYC several times and study maps and such. I love the research and the history. My father Edwin Allen "Allen" who is now a retired college professor in Nebraska still has a lot of relatives in NY. Somewhat Gen related -- looking for family -- My Dad had a brother Eugene who passed away. Eugene had two sons and we believe a daughter. After Eugene died the mother took the kids and literally disappeared. My grandfather Lester and his second wife, Dorothy looked for them for years. They hired investigators, etc. to no avail. They did trace one of the boys to the Navy in Florida years ago. We would love to meet this family so if any of you know of a Vincent or Eugene O'D we would love to hear of them. They were born sometime between 1948-1957. We think their mother's name was Jennie but aren't positive. I have a lot of family pictures, old and new on my myfamily.com site if anyone is interested. Some are of people I am not sure about. Parents of my dad and Eugene (Sr) are Lester A and Isabell M. Creen O'D -- As far as genealogy I will share a little more O'D and others info and if anyone can help that would be great. My outline will be at the end. James J. O'Donnell's second wife was Charlotte "Lottie" Kerner. The Kerner family ran a bakery and pub. A distant cousin of my father's who is still living today remembers seeing a photo of the pub in NYC. I think it was Kerner's pub owned by a Philip Kerner and/or a I am thinking. I would love to see a picture of the pub and or bakery. James J (some say it is Joseph) was a 'pipe closer'. What is a "pipe closer"- ?? From his daughter Lottie (named after her mother). "James attended parachial school until the 6th grade when he went to work for his father in the Asbesto buisness. He was not a very strong Catholic but was a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Health Catholic Church. After Mary Harrigan O'Donnell died James J. married Charlotte Kerner Creen - in 1923. While married to Charlotte, James became more active in community activities. He was an executive board member of the Benevolent Protection Society of Elks i.e. Elks Club (I have had trouble proving this). He also belonged to several Irish secret societys such as the Finnians (I have no way of knowing how to prove this). James died on his way home from work at the age of 51. He is buried in Holy Cross Cemetary in Brooklyn, New York. Information on Mary HARRIGAN- Mary O'Donnell died on Jan 28, 1914 (five days after Leroy was born) at 4:00 p.m. at 216 Hoyt Street, a tenement in Brooklyn, Death Certificate number 2674. An autopsy was performed and the cause of death was asphyxia due to gas poisoning. Details of medical examiner's report not included. No personal information was provided or known to the county medical examiner. She was buried in a pauper's grave at the County Farm on Feb 5, 1914 by the Dept. of Public Charities. (This death was investigated as a murder or suicide but nothing came of it.) Regarding Charlotte Kerner Creen O'Donnell- St John Cemetery - Mrs. Lottie O'Donnell, registered owner of Section 25, Range V, gravet site No. 025, is buried there. During those years they lived on Dikeman, Coffey, Hicks, VanBrunt, Richards, Columbia, Laqueer. John Hope last lived at 379 VanBrunt at the n/e corner of Dikeman in 1900. I was there about two years ago and believe it to now be a vacant corner lot. How far back do your O'Donnells go in Red Hook? Thanks, Mary Ellen

    3. Greetings from South Dakota! My father Edwin Allen "Allen" who is now retired in Nebraska still has a lot of relatives in NY. He had a brother Eugene who passed away. What is a "pipe closer"- From his daughter Lottie (named after her mother) "James attended parachial school until the 6th grade when he went to work for his father in the Asbesto buisness. ( This death was investigated as a murder or suicide but nothing came of it.) Regarding Charlotte Kerner Creen O'Donnell- St John Cemetery - Mrs. Lottie O'Donnell, registered owner of Section 25, Range V, gravet site No. 025, is buried there. I have a copy of the 1920 US Census page for Dwight Street. My uncle and > his wife lived at 67 Dwight Street. The names: O'Donnell, Lynch, Cassidy, > and Lynett lived at 65. Any of them yours? > DO YOU HAVE FIRST NAMES FOR THE O'D's?? My father's family was at 149 Dwight St. right off the corner of Dikeman St. After my mother and father got married they lived over a store on the corner of Dikeman and Van Brunt St then they lived at 23 Dikeman-149 Dwight-54 Dikeman-52 Dikeman-and now my brother lives at 47 Dikeman. I also know O'Donnell's from Red Hook, they lived on Coffey St. the father was Patrick and the mother (who just passed away about a month ago)was Mary. Any connection.
