The more I think about it, the more I think it must have been Bay Ridge since he said it was alittle further to the south. (From Red Hook.) It's an interesting story! Thanks for the reminder. Question: I have found an address for a relative on 26th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues. Do you know anything about that area at that time? I believe it is fairly near a major Hospital (Bellevue?) and that his brother was a physician there. Thank you. L. D. Kathleen, St. Vincent's Home data can be found on a Google search. I lived in Brooklyn (born in Red Hook) from 1823 to 1886. All the policemen on NYPD were "Irish" ncluding my uncle, Thomas Francis Walsh. I suggest you obtain a map of Brooklyn (address below). The NY State location is Bolton Landing on Lake George ( spent many summers there with my wife and children). 89th Street is in the Bay Ridge Section of Brooklyn. Fort Hamilton Avenue is now Fort Hamilton Parkway. Hi, Our Lady of Perpetual Help School is located on 5th Ave. between 59 and 60 St. in Bay Ridge Brooklyn. Holy Cross Cemetery is located at 3620 Tilden Ave. Flatbush, Brooklyn. 11203 718 284-4520. St. John's Cemetery is located at 8001 Metropolitan Ave. Middle Village, New York 718-284-4888. Rita
I am wondering where the following cemetaries and school are located. Is St. John's Cemetary? My gt grandfather James J. and great grandmother Charlotte Kerner Creen O'Donnell are buried there. My grandmother Isabell Kerner is buried in Holy Cross Cemetary. She graduated from High School at Our Lady of Perpetual Health parochial school in Flatbush, (Brooklyn) New York. For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed, says the LORD, who has compassion on you. Hi Does anyone have a voter registration record/and or a ward/precinct map for Brooklyn or elsewhere? I'm looking for examples for a talk I'm giving. Many thanks Nancy "In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity"
Erin, The Town of Lismore is in the County Waterford. The organization of Irish records goes from the largest, County, to Barony to Civil Parish to Townland as the smallest political entity. Within the townlands are the specific farms. "Irish Records" by James G. Ryan is a good start. The Townlands of Curraheen North and Curraheen South are in the Civil Parish of Lismore & Mocollop. You are lucky as the County Waterford is part of the ancient lands of the Decies (pronounced Desha). There is great literature and tradition associated with this place. My people are from the same part of Waterford. The Civil Parish of Lismore & Mocollop is in the north-west corner of County Waterford. Within that Civil Parish is the Town of Lismore, seat of the Duke of Devonshire (to this day!). There is a Bartholomew Corcoran listed as a tenant in Curraheen South in Griffith's Valuation of Tenements, the Householder's List which is essentially the only Census substitute for Ireland in the 19th Century. There are no other Corcorans listed in either Curraheen North or Curraheen South. On my Discovery Series #81 map, Curraheen South is just outside of the Town of Tallow on the north bank of the River Bride. There is a little mountain between it and Curraheen North. It must be pretty country. The Waterford Heritage Center in the City of Waterford has all the Catholic records, if your ancestor was RC. They can be contacted through the Internet. They are pretty good, but cost money. But you could probably do a lot yourself with the Civil Registration of Births and Marriages which started in Ireland in 1864. Griffith's indicates Bartholomew Corcoran was a tenant. His landlord was the Duke of Devonshire. The family may have owned land by 1877. The Waterford County Library has a free list of all Deaths and Marriages in the County dating from 1864. Google will get you there. The Library also has Griffith's for the County, including the Ordinance Survey maps created at the time of Griffith's Valuations which was early for Waterford, 1852. Good Luck Sheila MacAvoy Block
I have two questions about a term on Ireland birth records. On my ancestor's birth record (Patrick Corcoran b. 1877) it lists his father's occupation (Patrick Corcoran) as a landholder. I was wondering if this means that he was a land owner or a tenant farmer? Also, is there a way to locate which land he owned or rented? This is in a small village called Curraheen/Curriheen within the town of Lismore, Co. Waterford, Ireland. Thanks very much for any information you may be able to provide. Sincerely, Erin Schuck --------------------------------- Discover Yahoo! Have fun online with music videos, cool games, IM & more. Check it out!

Hi Kathleen, Red Hook is a section of Brookllyn. It lies along the western side of Brooklyn, along the East River. There's a part of it that curves out into the River and resembles a hook. Hence the name. My father once said that there was a section known as White Hook. Has anyone ever heard of it? I am searching for more information of the following ancestors. This is the only information I have on them in New York. By 1870 they moved to Ohio. The 1900 census says that they immigrated in 1859. They had another daughter, Mary, that was born in New York in 1861, so all I know is that they were living in NY between 1859 and 1861 and moved to Ohio before 1864 (son Michael was born in Ohio in 1864) Does anyone have access to a city directory, birth records for Manhattan in 1861 or ship records for 1859 who could do a lookup for me? NO listings in the years necessary in NYC for Mary MEAGHER/MAGHER/MANGHAN. You might also consider MAHER surname.
