    1. GARRY family, NYC 1853 Need help
    2. C Zabel
    3. After reading all the posts for several weeks I am convinced that this is the place that can help me knock a couple bricks out of the wall. Now I humbly ask for help from the generous members who know the ins and outs of the city. I would like to find a birth record for Michael S. GARRY, census and death record (1914) states he was born Dec 1853 in NYC. The death certificate lists parents as Bernard GARRY and Katherine RILEY, both born in Ireland; married, I don't know where. I have searched the Census of New York (the whole state) for 1860 and 1870 many times over and can find no Michael living with a Bernard or Katherine using various spellings. Also searched surrounding states. I believe he was an only child. He moved to Chicago in 1873 and married there in 1874. No further data on birth or parents found in Chicago. Is it possible to get a break-through without mortgaging the farm? Perhaps he lost one or both of his parents before the 1860 census and was living with another family, but I find no census record that fits or that I can verify. I checked the Emigrant Savings Bank and found a Kate Garry in the index but no other records. Online available directories have not produced any clues. Please point me in a positive direction. Any and all help greatly appreciated. Thank you, Carol

    3. New York newspapers on microfilm are available thru Inter-Library Loan. Go to the New York State Library page (sorry, I don't have the url for it). It lists all the info on how to order thru ILL and what info you need to give to your local library in order to order the film. I was able to get a January 29, 1874 edition of the Newtown Register (Queens Co, New York); this helped me narrow down when my 2nd-great-grandfather died. The article, while not stating the exact date, reads: The flag of the Laurel Hill Benevolent Society was displayed half-mast from Sunday to Thursday evening, in respect to the memory of Mr. John McGeough and Mr. James McCormack, members of the Society and residents of Laurel Hill, who died last week." The article was also a bonus as it gave me new info about him, of belonging to the LHBS. 1. Re: Holy Cross Cemetary, Brooklyn, NY
    2. Kathleen, Holy Cross is a Brooklyn Diocese cemetery. I don't believe any New York City cemeteries have a church attached. Chances are she lived somewhere in Brooklyn, (Flatbush) but Brooklyn was the "Borough of Churches". Her church could be anywhere in Brooklyn. As one who grew up in the Bronx, people were buried in St. Raymond Cemetery on Tremont Ave or Gate of Heaven in Westchester. Regarding high school, I'm not sure many women went to high school in that time period. My mother-in-law (b. 1907 and raised in Brooklyn) went as far as 9th grade and then went out to work. 1. An O'Donnell Mystery - we need help!
    2. Kathleen
    3. I met a gal online, Annette who says her mother Isabelle Carberry, who was married to an John (called Eddie) O'Donnell, born in Scotland, is not the same Isabelle Carberry married to my great uncle James George, brother of my grandfather Lester O'D. -- Aunt MaryAnn could you possible ask Aunt Teresa? From what I understand she has a lot of info! She has "Eddie" born in 1899. The father of John would be Frank. This is very curious. Charlotte Vassolo and Grandma Dorothy are the ones who gave me the information. Does anyone know who the real wife of James George is -- or is there a very, very strange coincidence that both married a woman of the same name, birthdate etc... It is possible to have the same name, but all the rest is rather odd- my guess is someone made an error, but why and how? I asked it Isabelle was married twice, even a short time to our James George and she did not think so. The really strange think is that Marilyn Switchkow (Bobby's first wife) had the same info and said she got it was on his Social Security info - application??? Now that is odd! Thanks for any help! 2. To avoid embarrassment it is important to remember that "Scotch" is what you drink and "Scots" are the people. .................. and yet we have the Scotch Guards but the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, not forgetting delicious Scotch eggs (cooked egg in a ball of sausage meat), the beauty and variety of the English (!) language !

    1. Scotch Irish vs. Scots Irish
    2. Barb: I'm no expert but I believe most of us who have a mix of Irish and Scots blood would tell you that, Webster's Dictionary not withstanding, "Scotch Irish" refers to those of us who both trace our ancestors back to Ireland and who also have a great fondness for the distilled whiskey called "Scotch." Scots-Irish on the other hand are those of us whose ancestors either fled Scotland for Northern Ireland during the reign of James II [if I'm not mistaken, he was the king who sought to re-impose Catholicism on a people who were fervent Protestants] or whose parents, grandparents or great-grandparents numbered at least one from Ireland and one from Scotland. In my own humble Scots-Irish case, my father was half-Scots, half-Irish, while my mother was 100% Irish. I'm very proud of both lineages and hereby raise a glass of Glenfiddich to both. G. Alexander
