Jean, I just found out recently that my wife's gr grandfather, Joseph Heery, was part of the 12th Illinois Regiment that fought in Sherman's March to the Sea. He was also a guard of Confederate prisoners at some point. He came to America in 1849, at the age of 21, enlisted on 13 Jul 1861, and served in the Union Army until his discharge in 1865.
