SNIPPET: P. William FILBY, widely-read historian who gave so much to the world of genealogy, died of a stroke at the age of 90 on 2 November 2002. Born 10 Dec 1911, in Cambridge, England, to William LUSHER and Florence Ada (STANTON), Mr. FILBY's distinguished career included six years (1940-46) in the British Intelligence Corps as a member of the cryptographic team which broke Germany's "ULTRA" code. Husband of Vera Ruth WEAKLIEM, Bill FILBY immigrated to Baltimore, MD, in 1957. Author and co-editor of many volumes on immigration, FILBY for many years was director of the Maryland Historical Society. He has written extensively on heraldry, British and American genealogy and was an authority on the "Star Spangled Banner." Survived by two sons and two daughters, Mr. FILBY was buried in England. For extensive data on worldwide immigration to North America (USA/Canada) look for the 15+ volume set "Passenger and Immigration Lists 1538-1900," Detroit/Gale Research (1981- ) at your local genealogical library. Data for this ongoing series was painstakingly extracted on a source-by-source basis from ship passenger lists, etc. Material is alphabetical by surname, and you will need to check each volume for your ancestor's name. Mr. FILBY also produced reference books specifically dealing with Italian and German immigration to the United States. Broderbund/Banner Blue (www.genealogy.com) has issued the first 15 volumes of "PILI"on a single CD (item number 354). Click on Shop/Data on CD ROM. I believe this data is available at that website by subscription, as well.
