My late mother in law was born and raised at the tip of the Dingle Peninsula and on a trip with one of my sons in 1999, we visited the area. It was awesomely beautiful and I wondered out loud, why she left to go live in New York, never really getting much above the poverty level. I thought she would have faired better in Ireland. I still think she would have been better off and happier if she stayed put. Poverty in that area of Ireland doesn't seem quite the same as poverty in New York (New Rochelle).
