I have some Flynns that emigrated to MA and Rhode Island and I had the occasion to be in the Pittsfield MA area where they have a NARA office. I searched all the available Boston records and found there were not many and it was very disappointing. The years I was looking for were among the missing. If you check the FamilySearch.org website, you will find the Family History Library has films for Boston passenger lists for 1848-1891. I haven't checked these films so don't know if there are gaps but assume they are copies of the NARA films. The Suffolk County GenWeb site has some links for passenger lists. I haven't explored them and don't know how informative they are. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ma/county/suffolk/passengerlists.html If they landed in NY in 1850, they didn't come in through Ellis Island which > didn't open till 1892. If they landed in NY in 1850, they didn't come in through Ellis Island which didn't open till 1892. Castle Garden is probably the facility they came through and they have a website at: http://www.castlegarden.org/ The naturalization process depended on what year they applied. One did not become a citizen until they were in the country for a number of years so when they landed in NY, they were aliens. Here's a good site that explains the process: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nynewyo2/naturalization/ Hello, I am new to the list and was hoping someone may be able to help me. > Some of my ancestors came to Ellis Island by way of Liverpool and originally > Ireland. I just put online (the Tipperary section of my website) the 2nd half of 1853. I have the sessions divided by quarter because of the volume of cases. A quarter runs more than 500 cases, many are adjourned to another day, so you will find a some cases repeated often. Since I have not chosen to to sort the data by name, and have kept it by date like what is in the record, if you don't have the time to search by date, use the Google search engine on the Tipperary page. However, the names are listed by last name, first name, so you should put the name in the index as Connors, Timothy not Timothy Connors. One of the cases I found interesting in this group, is how a person was charged for leaving his job before his contract with the employer was up. Again, many were jailed for debts and stealing potatoes.... Oh, I almost forget to mention...if you find a case of interest, check out the film because I haven't listed the charges or outcomes (dismiss, fine, jail...). Also, the clerks didn't know how to spell the townland names and many times the handwriting was so, that I couldn't make out the letters, so I stress check the film.... -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

Carlow R.C. Cathedral Register. 26th September 1778. Churched Mr. Gurley's Milk Woman, 2 shillings and 2pence -offering 4 shillings and 8 pence =Total 6 shillings and 10 pence. ( Note added in 2010. "Churched" was a form of purification ceremony that mothers were to have offered shortly after birth of a baby. This was a practice continued in the R.C. church up to 1970s or 80s. There are many entries in this register for "a Purification" the charge was one shilling and one penny ----one entry reads ; 21st November 1778, " for an Unction and Purification" two shillings and two pence" ===( combined charge for both services, obviously the mother was in danger of death , no mention of a baptism which may indicate that the baby had died ! ). 5th September, 1780. for a Baptism in Leigh and Unctions, 4 shillings and 4 pence, ( may be a case of both mother and baby are in danger of death, the priest first baptises the baby and then administers Extreme Unction to both of them ) Total figures for October 1778. Baptisms and Unctions 2 pounds / 2 shilling. Marriages; 5 shillings and 5 pence. Total ; 2 pounds 7 shillings. 5 pence. For my payment ; 11 shillings and 9 pence. For Mr. Gernon ; 1 pound, 15 shillings and 4 pence. ( Mr. Gernon was the Parish Priest for Carlow, Graigue, and Killeshin, not sure if the Baptisms / Marriages records were entered by a housekeeper or a clerk, but it appears the Mr Gernon did not enter any of them from 1777 to 1782.)
I am at present working on the archive collection known as the Pat Purcell Papers. In this undertaking I am assisted by two part-time volunteers. I am very grateful to Michael Purcell for this opportunity to work on such an important resource. I wish to add the following comment to Carlow / Graigue / Killeshin Baptism and Marriage registers, 1769 to 1811 , photocopied and found in the PPP last week. The photocopies appear to have been done in 1969 by Pat Purcell. The Baptisms / Marriages in the Cathedral Register for Carlow / Graigue / Killeshin were entered by a clerk, who seems more interested in keeping the accounts for 1777 to 1784. The Parish Priest of Carlow -Graigue, Mr Gernon, is paid a fee at the end of each month. Many entries state : "Baptism at (name of street )" , two shillings = two pence. (no name recorded). "for an Unction" one shilling = one penny (no name recorded). "for a Baptism and Unction" = three shillings and three pence (combination of both charges ). " Married at Mr. Gernons House" five shillings and five pence. There are a few entries recorded as "unpaid". All the writing is very clear and readable. Most entries are named with no record of Sponsors for Baptisms but Witnesses are recorded for Marriages. What is really frustrating is when he gives the address, there is no name attached and when he records the names, no address in given . Best Wishes, Jean.
