The "jour" probably is an abbreviation for "journeyman", which means that he's been practicing his craft for a good long time. a cooper (one that builds or fixes barrels, tubs, buckets, and other staved containers). Working as a "day" (Jour in French) cooper may not have been as steady work. I just tried the new search engine by typing in only my wife's (uncommon) maiden surname, nothing more. The search engine found her grandfather in the 1900 US census. I was able to easily save the image of the census page. It seems to work fine and I have bookmarked it for future use. Thanks for the info. It's very interesting, and I think I'm going to like it. I input only my family last name and under the birth section, my home county, Alpena, Michigan, United States. Up came a ton of data immediately! Marriages, births, deaths, all listed on the right side of the screen. You then click on any one of those you want, and it leads to another screen holding the data for that entry, plus access to the source of the data, any papers they have scanned into the system. There, you can look at all of it, or as usual, make a copy for yourself of the data page. It's fast (but maybe only because it's beta and not many are using it yet), and clean. However, in looking at my father's birth entry, I note they have the same problem they had with the pilot site at first. Half of a page is shown, and there is no ability to see the next half of the page. There is no 'next page' button to use to see what's on the next page. You are only accessing the page itself, not the collection of pages from which it's taken. I sent them an email with feedback, so here's hoping they correct that immediately. Otherwise, 2nd pages of data will be impossible to get to this way. MYRA HERRON I LOVE MY COUNTRY!! Hello List, I am searching for more information pertaining to a William GRIFFIN, born 1 April 1832 to a William and Ann (maiden name unknown) GRIFFIN in Ireland (location unknown). The family (father, mother and five children) emigrated from Ireland via Liverpool to NYC, arriving on 1 June 1844. William married (time and place unknown) a Honora GARVEY. The family (William, Honora and six children) lived in or near Memphis, TN between approximately 1860 to 1874. He then lived in San Francisco, CA from approximately 1875 to 1884 (enumerated erroneously as John GRIFFIN in the 1880 US Census) and sailed trading vessels between San Francisco and the Sandwich Islands in addition to working as a stone mason. Honora GRIFFIN died about 1885 (time and place unknown). William then lived as a rancher in Ponil Park, Colfax County, NM with his eldest son (John) and daughter (Margaret) from approximately 1885 until his death in 1902 in Raton, Colfax County, NM (enumerated correctly as W.R.GRIFFIN in the 1900 US Census). William was survived by sons John J.GRIFFIN, Maurice S. GRIFFIN, Edward E. GRIFFIN and daughter Margaret H. ASHBAUGH. Any information regarding William GRIFFIN in Ireland and/or the USA would be most welcome. Thank you all for your time, interest and help. John Griffin _GriffInn1@aol.com_ (mailto:GriffInn1@aol.com)

Any suggestions from list as to how I might find a marriage documentation or birth certificate for a gggrandparent She was married in Tipperary to James Shanahan, and all I know is her first name of ELIZA. (I think the townland where James was born was Templederry, although no documentation to prove it, simply the Griffiths Evaluation of that era. I presume she was also from Tipperary, since she was born in 1817 according to US census where she emmigrated in Oct of 1855. I am trying to find her maiden name or place of birth. Thanks to all for your willingness to help. M. Shanahan
Due to the time period, you need to rely on church records. Assuming you Shanahan was a Catholic, you can check what years are available at this site: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/ As you can see County Tipperary is divided by North and South Ridings. So if you are looking for records for Templederry, you need to know what RC parish this is in first. So go to this site and search for the townland: http://www.seanruad.com/ You will find it is in the Templederry Civil Parish in the North Riding. However, the civil parish is not always the same as the RC parish (just to keep you brain in gear). So now I suggest a website that I volunteer to maintain. It has a section on Civil Parishes at: http://www.irelandgenweb.com/~irltip/facts.htm You will find I have a webpage for the civil parish at: http://www.irelandgenweb.com/~irltip/CivilParishes/TemplederryCP.htm Right off you will find the RC parish is called, Killanave & Templederry. So now you go back the Irish Times site and see what records are available for the years you need. Also, since Templederry RC Parish is in the Killaloe Diocese, you can search for records on the Ireland Foundation site: http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/ However, be warned, the site will allow you to search and you may come up with a couple of hits but see all the info in the records, you have to pay and when see the record, they may not be yours. Well, my lesson of the day on how to research in Ireland. Hope it helps. Any suggestions from list as to how I might find a marriage documentation or > birth certificate for a gggrandparent > She was married in Tipperary to James Shanahan, and all I know is her > first name of ELIZA.
