DART As on each evening of the working week, people surge forward, climbing the steps to catch the Dart. The carriages are soon crowded, paper headlines prominently display our latest tragedy; briefcases open in the confined space, their owners lose themselves in the foolscap sheets. Others yawn or doze fitfully, heads lolling sideways as straight seats refuse to give comfort, knees rub against one's facing passenger. Suffocating in an airless carriage, as I reach upwards to open a window, passengers stare at me in silence. -- Mary Guckian, "The Road to Gowel," Swan Press/Dublin 2000
Looking for any information re: Patrick DORGAN Born April 26, 1860 in Ballybraher, Ballycotton, Co. Cork, Ireland. Died December 9, 1937 in Cranston, Rhode Island. Married Mary Catherine HARTNETT November 26, 1886 in the Cloyne RC Church, Cloyne, Co. Cork, Ireland. Born May 16, 1869 in Churchtown South, Cloyne, Co. Cork, Ireland. Died November 23, 1950 in Warwick, Rhode Island. Patrick DORGAN was the son of Patrick DORGAN (DARGAN). His mother's name is not known. Mary HARTNETT was the daughter of John HARTNETT and (?) FLYNN Patrick DORGAN emigrated to Ellis Island on October 28, 1869 from Queenstown (Cobh) onboard the Teutonic. He gave his age as 40 which would have him born in 1856! He gave his last Irish address as the townland of Ballylanders in the P.L.U. of Middleton in the civil parish of Ballintemple. Patrick DORGAN may have had a brother named David DORGAN who married a woman named HEALY. They had five children, Elizabeth, John Christopher, David, and Jeremiah and James (twins). They all remained in Ireland and lived in Ballybraher, Ballycotton, East Co. Cork. Mary HARTNETT and their five children (Anne Theresa, Michael Joseph, Patrick Francis, David Andrew, William John) followed Patrick DORGAN, arriving at Ellis Island June 9, 1897 also onboard the Teutonic from Queenstown (Cobh). She gave her age as 28 and last Irish address as Midleton. They settled in Rhode Island. Here are my questions for listers: PATRICK DORGAN: 1. Who is doing research re: DORGAN / HARTNETT / FLYNN / HEALY families of East Cork? 2. Where and when was Patrick DORGAN born? 3. Who were the parents of Patrick DORGAN and where were they born and married? 4. Who were Patrick DORGAN's siblings? MARY HARTNETT: 1. Who were the parents of Mary HARTNETT and where were they born and married? 2. Who were Mary HARTNETT's siblings? Thanks for any information. Bill Dorgan bdorgan@bellsouth.net

NY state library has a new database on line. Here's their blurb: What you will find here Information includes more than 360,000 men who served in New York State Volunteer and the United States Sharpshooter units and the state's three regiments of United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. What you will not find here The database does not contain names of men who served in the United States Army (regulars), United States Marine Corps, United States Navy, Veteran Reserve Corps, or New York State Militia (National Guard) units that were temporarily mustered into federal service during the Civil War. Nora: I guess we will never know their Irish background. My Hogan was born in South Carolina, an only son, and I guess there may be a possibility that your Thomas is a distant relative, since the Hogans were from Illinois, and Harvard is not too far from Chicago. Maybe someday we will find out. Good luck. Marilyn, I'm even more far removed that you. My father's paternal cousin Elizabeth Fahey, married Thomas Hogan in 1923. They had one child, John Michael (b. April 1928). Elizabeth died in 1958. Don't know anything about the husband but the son died November 2000 in Harvard IL. Wrote to an address in Harvard but never received a response. Couldn't tell from where in Ireland the Hogans came because Thomas was born in Illinois. I have just added another 80+ surnames to the Co Tipperary Surname Registries on my website. Please check your entry for accuracy. If you haven't submitted a name, I can't begin to tell you how getting your name out there in as many places as possible to make possible connections. Just two days ago I was contacted by my Flynn 3rd cousin who I didn't know existed. He found a message I posted in the year 2000 on the Rootsweb Flynn Message Board...certainly made my day because now we can exchange family info and maybe break down some of those brick walls. You can access the Co Tipperary Surname Registry by going to the URL under my name. At the top of my homepage, you will find drop down menus. Under Ireland, click on County Tipperary. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton

Hi Dr Jim, Just wanted to say that I have a friend by that name....she is on vacation for the next almost two weeks but I will ask her upon her return. Maureen
Trying to find more information on my McCULLOUGH and McNALLY ancestors. James McCullough and Elizabeth McNally were both born in County Monaghan in 1826 according to family records and death certificates. Elizabeth was the daughter of Arthur McNally. We found a record that shows a James McCullough and wife Elizabeth arriving in Philadelphia on the Ship Superior in July, 1849. There is no information found about them for many years. They had a son born in February of 1863 in Joliet, Will Co. IL. Will Co. had no record when contacted several years ago. They had 2 daughters born in Kellogg, Jasper Co. IA in 1864 and 1866. According to the 1900 census Elizabeth stated she had given birth to 3 children and all 3 were living. The big mystery is where were they and what were they doing between 1849 and 1863???? We also cannot find information on the families in Ireland (James parents, siblings and Elizabeth mother, siblings - their marriage date, etc.) I have fairly good information on their son James and his famiy as he was my grandfather ! (he was in his late forties when my father was born). Daughter Mary Jane married an L. Stoll 26 September 1888 in Polk Co. IA - no other information except that she died in 1902 in Des Moines. Daughter Rose Anna married Philip Streck and they lived in Grinnell, Poweshiek Co. IA. Thank you for any help and suggestions. Elaine
