Please friends, can anyone tell me how to obtain an Obituary in the NY TImes on a George Benedict Sloan July 15th. 1958. Or would their be a well know Brooklyn Newspaper that I'm not aware of. Kathleen
Hi Nora, It sounds like your ancestors and the rest of the people in those two townlands were in open rebellion against the Tithe in 1834, as was much of Ireland at the time. Using guerrilla tactics, the Whiteboys, Ribbonmen, and Molly Maguires held the countryside by night while the British Army held the countryside under martial law by day. The Tithe went to the Established Church (the anglician Church of Ireland) and had to be collected by force by constables and the British Army. Little wonder that the Tithe was hated by Catholics and Dissenters alike, nearly the entire population. Your ancestors' refusal to pay the Tithe ended the record-keeping you sought. Aided by their resistance and that of their neighbors, the Catholic Emancipation movement and its allies were able to finally abolish the Tithe four years later (1838). thanks to George of the Irish Heritage newsletter...oh, do I remember rhubarb, we grew it in our yard and my mother cooked it and we ate in bowls with lots of sugar, but not in pies or as good as this recipe, plus I thought Amaretti cookies were Italian??? Pat, Good luck with the Tithe records. I had the joy of finding no occupiers listed on the land for the two townlands in Turlough Parish in Co. Mayo that I wanted. I was told at the National Archives in Dublin that not all Tithe records listed the occupiers (thank you very much to the one doing the Tithe records there in 1834!). I thought I was going throw a tantrum then but of course it's not the archives' fault. Nora >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >I'm curious about your comment that your ancestor probably came from Tipperary town because no townland was noted > Yes, Nora, most annoying! Since every single baptism and marriage I obtained for this family had not one townland noted, I am now transcribing the whole Griffiths Valuation (from Otherdays.com) for the civil parishes of the Tipperary Catholic parish and then will look at where the Flanagan and O'Connor names occur...since I didn't get a good baptism for my Timothy, I think he was from out of the Cashel & Emly diocese and moved there because that is where his wife, Catherine Flanagan lived (I have her baptism). I have also started transcribing the Tithes for the Tipperary Catholic parish which were conducted about 20-30 years previously. Hopefully, both of these exercises will give me some clues as to where my great grandfather was born in County Tipperary. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA

Hi JD, sorry I've been out of touch. Michael and Pat had excellent suggestions. Also, the Dáltaí na Gaeilge (Students of the Irish Language) site lists Irish language teachers and classes in the U.S. by clicking on your state on their map at http://www.daltai.com/classes.htm . Unfortunately, I don't see anything listed for Atlanta (which really surprises me). So, as Pat points out, multi-media learning is the next best way to go. The set called IrishNow! about 3/4 of the way down on Pat's webpage ( http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/IrishAmerican/ ) looks good. Also, the company Fios Feasa ('Knowledge of knowledge') has good multi-media learning material at http://www.fiosfeasa.com/script/bearla/products/first_steps.asp and at http://www.fiosfeasa.com/bearla/products.html . Meanwhile, here's a new and extremely interesting development. Tomás de hÍde at Lehman College (City University of New York) has organized unline for-credit classes which will begin June 7. As the Dáltaí information says, "Course makes use of Blackboard on-line software with sound files, two audio cassettes, two videotapes, and weekly conference phone calls. For additional information, contact the instructor at 250 Bedford Park Blvd West Bronx, NY 10468-1589 Phone: (718) 938-1345 Email: tihde@lehman.cuny.edu " Lastly, when I get my computer back up completely (hopefully in about 2 weeks le cúnamh Dé), I'll finish my free on-line multimedia pronunciation guide. And then we'll be able to test your cousins in Dublin! Hi Pat, I'm curious about your comment that your ancestor probably came from Tipperary town because no townland was noted (I'm assuming you mean the church records). I have done research in Ireland in various church records and have found some priests put in the townland and others did not (in the same church records). Very annoying to say the least! I have since paid for research and found James' sister, Catherine's baptism record with the exact date of birth as is listed on her death certificate. James' wasn't found (what else is new?) but I did find they came from Tipperary Parish, no townland mentioned so probably Tipperary Town, and found some of their siblings. I also paid for research and have come up Catherine's parents but Timothy is still up in the air and requires a whole new set of posts to explain him. However, I am happy to know where they emigrated from and will finally put this family aside and work on some of my other families... -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA
