    1. Re: Tithes Records
    2. Mary, Are you saying there are two lists for the Tithe? I was looking at the Tithe Applotment records. The records I looked at were taken between 1824 and 1832. I have looked at the tithe records in Down, Clare, Limerick, Cork and Mayo. The Turlough Parish in Mayo was the only place that didn't lists the occupiers (tenants). If there are two lists, why didn't the man at the archives in Dublin mention that? He seemed very knowledgeable. Thanks. Nora >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hi All, The Tithe witholders list only listed those people who didn't pay the tithes, but there is also the Tithe Listing which lists all of the people the Tithes were levelled on. All are listed on this one and it also gives acerage, etc. Its was taken, I think around 1824. I know that it exists for County Tipperary, don't know about other counties. Cheers Mary

    3. I also went to OTHERDAYS and had no trouble printing. I then went to Godfrey and had the same trouble others of you had. I believe the problem is that OTHERDAYS only allows its members, who pay a subscription fee, to print the information. I really can't blame them . It is nice that one can access the site through Godfrey but if you want the ease of printing you should really join OTHERDAYS. -- Judy Lamken Kilkee Kerries Chicagoland mailto:kerries@kilkee.net

    1. Ireland of Otherdays.com
    2. Good morning to the LISTSERV: As a vendor I hate to post to these wonderful means of communications and only lurk but I wanted you to know that I have taken note of your problems and have forward this problem back to home office in Bray, Ireland. I am waiting on a conference call this morning from Ireland and should have some up date for you all. Printing should be available for everything except for the maps (Catholic and Civil maps can be printed) and photos. That means the Griffith's can be printed. I noted from the LISTSERV that you all have access from many different sources - Godfrey and individuals as well as DSL to dial up access. This should not make a difference but it helpful to know when back tracking the problem. Once I noticed the problem on the LISTSERV I to tried to print Griffith's with no luck. I am on DSL line with SBC (phone company). I have always been able to print Griffith's as well. I thank the LISTSERV in bringing this to our attention so it may be fixed right away. I will keep you posted to the results as soon as I have that information. Otherdays stands 100% behind their online database and is very concern that this problem has occurred. If you would like to e-mail me personally on this or any other matter you can do so by either kharrison@otherdays.com or harrisonkim@sbcglobal.net. I will also be at NGS conference if any one would like to talk to me - however, I will not be having a booth but could meet you at specific place. Respectfully, Kim S. 3. > > >Are you saying there are two lists for the Tithe? > There are the Tithe defaulters. It is a list of those who refused to pay the tax.. Here's how Grenham describes them in his "Tracing Your Irish Ancestor's Book." An organised compaign of resistance to the payment of tithes, the so called, "Tithe War", culminated in 1831 in large scale refusals to pay the tax...clergymen were required to produce lists of those liable for tithes who had not paid, the 'Tithe Defaulters'. The lists can provide a fuller picture ot the tithe payers than the original Tithe Book, and can be useful to cross check against the book, especially if it dates from before 1831. Of these lists 127 survive...they relate pricipally to Counties Kilkenny and Tipperary, with some coverage also of Counties Carlow, Cork, Kerry, Laois, Limerick, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Waterford and Wexford. I did a quick look on the LDS website to see if I can find their film numbers and couldn't find them. Does anyone know them? -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton

    2. Hi, This hasn't to do with Otherdays but I have the same kind of problem with the Newspapers of Ancestry and maybe someone can tell me what I can do. I had the newspapers from ancestry for a month and found quite a bit on my Fort Wayne people but My cartridge ran out of ink so I downloaded some of what I found till I got to Office max for ink cartridges. The articles are all in my computer and I can read them but when I tried to print them all I got was the header and the writing on the side but the articles won't come out. I have tried everything to get them out but it always comes out blank. Other than subscribing again to Ancestry and using their printer button does anyone know how I can get them out. Beth

    3. Pat, I read your question this am and I immediately went to "OTHERDAYS" and printed off a page with no problem. I just went to file and print. I am on a DSL modem through our local cable company, perhaps that's why I am not having any problems with the printing from the site. I don't do anything special to get the info I want. I am sorry to hear of you and many others print problems. So, if you know the civil parish of your area of interest, put it in a 'place' search and under Land Records, you should find out the film number. If you can't find it, let me know, I have printed out all the tithe numbers for all of Ireland. What you need to know is, that not all are in readable condition. It just depends on the civil parish. I have found some in County Tipperary excellent and others terrible. But, you won't know until you get the film and look. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton

    3. Pat, I subscribe through Godfrey. My main reason for subscribing to Godfrey was access to censuses that I could not get at Ancestry.com and the New England book images. The Otherdays subscription was a bonus. The only thing useful I was able to find on it was the Griffith evaluations. I really have not had the time to do a lot with it. After all the discussion about printing I thought I would check it out again. I could not print the images tonight although I did print them in the past. I am not sure if it was through Godfrey access or when they gave free access direct to Otherdays on St. Patricks day. I do have a few images printed at an earlier time. What I usually do in addition to printing images is to copy and paste the information that comes up on the screen about my search along with the images. I paste this information onto a Word document and save and print it. I could still do that tonight. Most of my ancestors are Irish but I also have some English. It is my English Mansfields who came to MA in about 1635/40 that I search for at Godfrey. By the time the Mansfield family got down to me it was well diluted with Irish. 1. Re: Tithes Records
    2. Jerry, Is that the reason why? That's the first time I heard about this. Now I'm annoyed with my rebel relatives! How am I going to find them if they wouldn't cooperate? I thought the Molly Maguires were in Pennsylvania not County Mayo. Thanks. Nora >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hi Nora, It sounds like your ancestors and the rest of the people in those two townlands were in open rebellion against the Tithe in 1834, as was much of Ireland at the time. Using guerrilla tactics, the Whiteboys, Ribbonmen, and Molly Maguires held the countryside by night while the British Army held the countryside under martial law by day. The Tithe went to the Established Church (the anglician Church of Ireland) and had to be collected by force by constables and the British Army. Little wonder that the Tithe was hated by Catholics and Dissenters alike, nearly the entire population. Your ancestors' refusal to pay the Tithe ended the record-keeping you sought. Aided by their resistance and that of their neighbors, the Catholic Emancipation movement and its allies were able to finally abolish the Tithe four years later (1838). Hope that's helpful, Jerry Kelly
