Mary and Nora, The National Archives will do look ups for you. They found my grandmother and her mother and siblings on a ship list in 1887 and sent me photocopies. I think it cost $17.50 (it was about a year ago). If they don't find the information you do not pay. You can download the forms for requesting a search on the NARA website. THE LOW FIELD Sitting on this smooth well worn granite rock, Where my father and his father before him sat At the foot of Slieve Gullion Mountain Smoking a Players Number Six. I draw in the air of the freshly turned soil, Tracing the straight lines of the drills in my mind Seeing the fertile auburn earth gently parted Lying open, awaiting the life-giving seed. At the foot of Slieve Gullion is my high field And further down the low road, the low field, From this rock I see both, bordered by stone ditches And smooth flowing shucks, just as my forefathers did. In the purple heather breeze I hear their words echo, "Plough high down by the holly trees, watch the rocks, Keep the plough board straight, reins tight. Son, a man's known by the line of his drill." Come harvest time the neighbors will gather, The woman fresh faced with big heaving bosoms In floral aprons, tied twice round their broad waists, Flattened with boned stays and flannel petticoats. They bring tae, buttermilk and soda farls To men with yellow nicotine beards who stop to eat, Smoke and talk, as freckled children chase frogs And collect dawking leaves to cure the sting of nettles. When the mist comes down o'er the mountain Weary workers plod home through ditch lined lonans, Up to half doors, removing dirt stained boots. Women tell the weather by the way the fire lights, The men, bone sore, bathe callused feet in warm salted water, Children, tired from play, fall asleep by the fire. Finally the wearied folks retire to feather ticks Where life is made and life departs. In the high field, surrounded by the mist that caps Slieve Gullion The damp evening air seeps into my bones, I head home, past Chambrey's and the Protestant School, Past white washed-homes with familiar smells, Fresh oven baked bread, churned butter, Turf scented smoke swells to form a nebulous cone. In the evening solitude, life creeps up through furrowed soil And the bells of Dromintee Chapel ring. -- Sheenagh M. O'Rourke (1995) "Irish America" magazine Mar-Apr 1996
I visited the website and cannot access anything on the database section. I did see a notice that they offer a membership for $20-25. Are these databases available only to members, or am I missing something? According to this message (attached) I inferred that it was a site which could be searched without charge. thank you so much for the lookup! leigh
If you give me more info I will help. Age, parents if you know them, location, etc. Arlene
I am researching my gr-gr-grandmother Ellen Marie Sheehan , I found her name in the Irish records extraction database. Is there any kind soul here that has access to this and can kindly email me whatever information is there, if not suggestions. TIA Kevin
Mary, I don't know if all the local National Archives sites have the microfilms. If you're not near a National Archives site, check out the Family History Centers of the Latter Day Saints nearest you. If you go to their website: _http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp_ (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp) you can find one near you and they will order the index for you for $3.75 (US). You can print the info at the Family History Center for a 40 cent fee I don't know about mailing requests. I don't believe the National Archives conducts any research. Perhaps someone else on the list can answer that question. Good luck. Patty, According to my notes the soundex index covers 1895-1952. Good luck. Nora lady.star@charter.net writes: What years did the list cover? My Canada family crossed in the early 1900's.
Jim, The Canadian crossings are indexed by soundex. They were very easy to search. I would imagine they would be at the NYC National Archives site on Varick Street. I haven't been to that site in a few years so I don't know if it has been renovated like the DC site. There were drawers that contained the microfilms and easily identified. In DC, they were located with the passenger ship lists. My great uncle came through the Niagara Falls crossing in 1910. I believe it was the St. Albans grouping. It is indexed (soundex) from 1895-1952 Sorry I can't do better than that. I didn't copy down the title since I was focused on the time frame. I just checked my copy and there is a man listed below my uncle who crossed by Halifax, NS in 1919. Hope I haven't confused anyone.
