    1. address
    2. Dan Doherty
    3. In March of this year we went to Ireland. My Grandfather was born in Killeagh a little town in County Cork. We stopped at the only catholic church in town and I spoke with the priest and he showed us an old book with my grandfather and his siblings names and dates of their baptism. He had an appointment with a parishioner so I did not get a copy. The church is St John the Baptist in Killeagh, I have written to quite a few web sites in Ireland asking for the address of the church but never get an answer. Does anyone know how I could get the address of this church in Kileagh, County Cork Ireland. Thanks in advance for any help. Dan Doherty

    1. In Memoriam - Historian P. William FILBY/"Passenger and Immigration Lists: 1538-1900"
    2. Jean R.
    3. SNIPPET: P. William FILBY, widely-read historian who gave so much to the world of genealogy, died of a stroke at the age of 90 on 2 November 2002. Born 10 Dec 1911, in Cambridge, England, to William LUSHER and Florence Ada (STANTON), Mr. FILBY's distinguished career included six years (1940-46) in the British Intelligence Corps as a member of the cryptographic team which broke Germany's "ULTRA" code. Husband of Vera Ruth WEAKLIEM, Bill FILBY immigrated to Baltimore, MD, in 1957. Author and co-editor of many volumes on immigration, FILBY for many years was director of the Maryland Historical Society. He has written extensively on heraldry, British and American genealogy and was an authority on the "Star Spangled Banner." Survived by two sons and two daughters, Mr. FILBY was buried in England. For extensive data on worldwide immigration to North America (USA/Canada) look for the 15+ volume set "Passenger and Immigration Lists 1538-1900," Detroit/Gale Research (1981- ) at your local genealogical library. Data for this ongoing series was painstakingly extracted on a source-by-source basis from ship passenger lists, etc. Material is alphabetical by surname, and you will need to check each volume for your ancestor's name. Mr. FILBY also produced reference books specifically dealing with Italian and German immigration to the United States. Broderbund/Banner Blue (www.genealogy.com) has issued the first 15 volumes of "PILI"on a single CD (item number 354). Click on Shop/Data on CD ROM. I believe this data is available at that website by subscription, as well.

    1. info on family
    2. Marie Burt
    3. Wonder if anyone has come across a Washington A. Devaney. Found on 1880 Census for Blount Co. AL at age 54, Born in NC. Suspect he was my grandfather but can find him nowhere else thus far. He was married in 1880 to Annie S. Amerson Cassell. 2nd Husband to Annie with 3 daughters in household by name of Devaney but suspect 2 if not all of the girls belonged to Annie and Calvin Cassell. Believe after the census of 1880 my grandmother, Fayenettie J. Devaney was born. Due to the 1890 census being unavailable and the fact that by 1900 she was married with her first child I am unable to place her in the home of her father. Any info on the family of Washington A. Devaney is desired. My mother knew a lot of Irish folk tales but never imparted any info about her grandpa and since she and her mother died at an early age I am against MY Brick Wall. Marie K. Burt

    1. Re: [Irish-American] ship manifests
    2. Elaine, Thanks for the info. I know that in 1926 that my father's brother and sister came on the same ship but are not listed on the same page. They were both adults. There was a person listed with my uncle who may have been a cousin but I'm not sure (I just found this info). No name listed with my aunt stands out to me. No one listed was from the same area of Ireland as my aunt. Of course, the later the date the better the info. Nora elaine@cyberhouse.org writes: Nora, I filled in the form with as much information as I knew such as names and ages of the family, where they were living and where they were going. I also had an approximate period of years (1885/1887). They found most of the family. The 3 youngest children were not on the page they sent. I need to send another request as we are thinking that the cousins who gave me the information about my grandmother's grandparents emigrating after 1890 may have been incorrect. They may have been on the same ship and the other children may have been listed with them. Someone on another list told me to get the film from the LDS and look at it at one of their libraries and go through the whole manifest as sometimes they did not list all the family together for some reason. That is not so easy for me to do. None of my people can be found at Ellis Island as they all came before it opened.

    3. Here are a few websites with information on Irish naming patterns: http://www.allaboutirish.com/library/gen/namingpatterns.shtm http://ahd.exis.net/monaghan/irish-names-naming.htm http://genealogy.about.com/od/naming_patterns/ http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cregan/patterns.htm http://ralphandsue.com/ChasingOurTales/chasingourtalescolumn/irish_naming_pa tterns.html http://www.janbren.freeserve.co.uk/naming_patterns.htm http://www.ballyd.com/results/namingpatterns.htm There are a whole bunch more, but I think they may all say pretty much the same thing. I just did a google search for "Irish naming patterns" and 85 sites came up.
