    1. [IGW] Migration, Cos. Longford and Westmeath -- (O'FARRELL, O'FARRILLl)
    2. Jean Rice
    3. Like most of Ireland's counies, Longford has been depopulated by emigration over the years, but the Longford emigration, like that of its neighboring county of Westmeath, differs somewhat in that, as well as the traditional movements to Britain, North America and Australia, there was a considerable migration to Argentina from 1842 to 1860, during and after the Great Famine. The Longford families settled mainly in the province of Buenos Aires, where large tracts of land were being offered to European settlers. Edel Miro O'Farrell became President of the Republic of Argentina in 1914, and a kinsman of an even earlier emigrant, Romulo O'Farrill, is one of Mexico's leading media magnates. -- Excerpt, "Irish Counties," J.
