Dear List, This is my first posting. I am researching the Buttomer family and have seen several references that claim the family is, or was, most numerous in County Cork. However, I presently have no information to verify this. Here is what data I have: JOHN BUTTOMER, was my husband's maternal great grandfather. He claimed to have been born in England in 1855, but I have not been able to verify this. He had at least one brother, JAMES BUTTOMER , who claimed(on census records) to have been born in Ireland about 1850. I have John's death record from the City of Rockland , Maine, USA. His parents are recorded as MICHAEL BUTTOMER, & JULIA MALONEY, both born in Ireland. Thus , it appears to me that the family left Ireland sometime after 1850, and stayed in England at least long enough for John to be born. They do not appear on any English census records. Nor does it appear that the parents ever emigrated to the U.S. Perhaps they returned to Ireland. John and James came to the U.S. about 1872, and John was naturalized much later, in 1904. His naturalization papers do not give very much information, and I suspect that the pair may have entered illegally. John claimed to have entered into Portland, Maine, which makes me think he may have come from Canada. This was a very common trip. So far , I have found no record of the family in Canada, but there is much to search still. I am hoping someone in Ireland may be able to help me find some record of Michael Buttomer and Julia Maloney. Thanks so much for your time and attention. Margaret Oliver South Thomaston, Maine, USA
