    3. No I haven't. This is the first I have heard of this. What is it and where would I be able to find it. County offices or churches? And would they have records back to the mid 1800's? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marjory Watts" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, March 08, 2003 5:00 PM Subject: Re: [IRL~ROOTS] McCarthy, Higgins, Hughes, Horan > Have you tried to locate "Intent to Naturalize" papers in Columbia Co., NY? > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Pat & Bob Belterman" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Saturday, March 08, 2003 1:32 PM > Subject: [IRL~ROOTS] McCarthy, Higgins, Hughes, Horan > > > I am fairly new to genealogy so please bare with me. My grandfather was Patrick James McCarthy, born 1887 in Columbia County, New York State, USA. My ggrandparents were James E McCarthy and Jane (Jennie) A Higgins also born in New York State, USA. Now my question, how do I find where my gggrandparents Patrick McCarthy, Catherine Horan, Patrick Higgins and Kate Hughes were born? All the paperwork I have just say Ireland as place of birth. Where do I go from here? Everyone who could answer these questions are deceased. At an early age, I might add. Mother - Jane Mary (McCarthy) Hoffman - d age 51 Ggrandfather - Patrick James McCarthy - d age 32 Gggrandmother - Jane A (Higgins) McCarthy - d age 46 Gggrandfather - James McCarthy - d age 37 Any help would be greatly appreciated Patricia Belterman Stuyvesant NY USA > > > > > > > > ==== IRELAND-ROOTS Mailing List ==== > > Raise both hands and repeat after me: > > We will not initiate or participate in any discussions about any kind of > VIRUS or SPAM messages on this list. > > To do so will result in your removal from the list. > > >

    3. Most people who wished to have full participation in their new homeland, file(ed) for an "Intent to Naturalize" form, which gave information about them, where born, when, all members of family who accompanied them,, wife & children - with same information. A residency period was established at 5 years, and this is still in effect, but intent was filed earlier. I don't know when we started having Naturalization ceremonies as we do now, when the people have completed learning the Consitutution, Bill of Rights, etc. In early County Court records after the Revolutionary War, it is not uncommon for a man's request to give up his allegience to his former country and swear allegiance to America. My Grandfather filed in the Superior Court, in Erie Co., NY, in Nov. 1922, and was accepted in March 1928. These are documents issued by the U.S. Department of Labor, Naturalization Services. You might be able to pull up a web site for your county that would give you the needed information. Duplicates of ALL are filed in Washington at citedlocation. I have found entries for an individual in the early 1800's in the Co. of my residence in TN, which simply stated that the man was from - Ireland, or wherever, and swears to give up fidelity for his former homeland and swears allegience to this country.
