Dear Listers, I'm new to this list. I'm in USA, state of California. I have a photograph of the (new replacement) headstone for a James McNally, born abt. 1839 somewhere in Ireland. I found a military listing on ancestry.com that seems to be this James McNally. The military roster shows that James stated that both of his parents were born in Ireland, but counties not listed. My husband and I discovered his grave completely by accident while on a trip this past week to my mother's in USA, New Mexico. While driving a very long scenic route in the New Mexico Gila mountains, we came across a small roadside sign that only said, "Cemetery". I wanted to stop and investigate this SO remote cemetery hidden in the mountains of the southwest US. We discovered that this 1800s cemetery is still being used as late as 2003-2004. This James McNally's tombstone states that he won the Medal of Honor. He served during the Civil War and Indian Wars of the US. His last military rank was Sergeant. He was in the 3rd and 8th Calvary. His marker also notes that James 'Had no identified survivors.' James died November 26, 1904 in Kingston, New Mexico, USA. If anyone knows that this James McNally is theirs, please write me. I"ll email the photos of his tombstone and a history of sorts as where he is exactly buried in this remote mountain cemetery. Jacquie Baral IRELAND-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com MCNALLY-L@rootsweb.com
