    1. RE: [IRL~ROOTS] byrne
    2. Scheer, James (ott)
    3. You might try looking at the marriage indexes for Ireland in the period when you thought she married. With these indexes, it is possible to cross-reference the groom's name to the bride's. Byrne is a common name and has common variants: the names are not always spelled on records the way the family spelled them. The McGehan name is less common and may be easier to find. When you are looking in the marriage indexes, and you come across a McGehan marriage, note the Volume and Page and District for that marriage; then check the entries for the Byrnes for the same time and see if you can match same volume, page and district. When you have the right combination, you can order the photocopy of the register from Dublin for a small fee (I think last time I did this it cost one punt fifty pence Irish money.) This will give you the location of the marriage, the residence of the fathers of bride and groom, and - perhaps - the age of the parties to the marriage. Then you can look for her in the similar indexes for births. The birth record will give the mother's maiden name as well as the father's name and occupation and residence. The indexes can be ordered in from Salt Lake to any Family History Centre. 1. [IRL~ROOTS] If you don't know where
    2. LEWIS PATRICIA C.
    3. If you don't know exactly where an ancestor came from or what county, a check thru the Griffiths films may help you out.but not always. If they weren't tenants, or listed, you can be just out of luck. I had NO idea and still don't have any knowledge of where one set of my paternal GGparents came from when they were in Cork County.......only know they were born there in 1825 and 1826, because of census. I did luckily find out that my "other set" of GGparents did come from Kanturk and Boherbue areas, and did find them listed in 1804, and have some documentation as to marriage and baptismal from the churches there. It took 35 years to track down but I finally found them. And having no family to ask any questions I was on my own doing all the checking thru everything long before computers and websites and others to help doing "look-ups". All these people were dead long before I entered this world and no one from then on had any info..the Irish were often quite secretive about things ( some still are), for many reasons. BUT, don't let it deter you from looking-as frustrating as it all is, and if you get a clue even the smallest one and would like to see the areas that yor ancestors once lived, by all means go. I finally got the chance in June and am glad I made the trip, despite the rain.It was worth it all and really a thrill to be able to walk the streets/roads they once walked, and lucky for me seeing the houses they lived in back then. Who knows you might just run into someone who can give you information on a family that left the area even tho it was many years ago. And there are phone books to look up names and check and see if someone is related..... so don't hesitate make the trip! Pat

    1. [IRL~ROOTS] new to the list and begging for help!
    2. Lyn
    3. First of all - hi everyone! I am new to this list and desperately in need of help! I am searching for the family of my gr-gr-grandfather Patrick O'Connor who was from Aclare in Co. Sligo. Patrick, and his brother John (at least at the moment we are assuming they are brothers) came over from Ireland to Bradford in the UK sometime around 1870 - Patrick married Bridgett O'Rourke in 1875 and his brother married her sister Catherine soon after. Patrick appears to have been born in 1848 although his death certificate was altered shortly after his death and it could actually be 1843. His brother John appears to have been born in 1855 - the 1881 census shows him as 23/6 - both are listed as masons labourers. I obtained the marriage certificate of Patrick and his father is listed as Michael Connor - Farmer. So, if anyone has a Michael Connor/O'Connor in Aclare who had 2 sons Patrick and John that have gone missing can you please let me know! Thanks in advance Lyn --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Version: 6.0.408 / Virus Database: 230 - Release Date: 24/10/02

This service has enabled me to obtain grave marker photos of relatives` graves thousands of miles from me.           I wonder if there are any volunteers in Ireland that photograph grave markers in their local cemeteries?
