The family line stops with them, have no idea where to look for anything on them. Everything I have tried has come up blank. Was told the family was suppose to have came from Ireland way back in the 1200's The family name was really suppose to be De Lacy, as you can tell we need help to be able to get the family history correct. We haven't been able to find anything more on the family. If any one knows where I might be able to find something on him would you let me know. Thank you for any help Betty (in Montana. US.)

    1. [IRL~ROOTS] Townlands Pronunciation: closest equivalent to Moohanna
    2. Jocelyn Harvey
    3. Dear List, I've just learned the name of the precise birthplace of my Barrington greatgrandfather through his sister's family's Bible. We knew the Barrington children (born 1828 on) were baptized in the old Ennistymon church and lived in or very near the town of Ennistymon in Clare. The bible records the birthplace as "Moohanna, County Clare". Could anyone knowledgeable about likely pronunciations tell me if this is likely to be Mooghna (about 3 miles south of Ennistymon) or Moananagh (about 3 miles SE)? Your help will be much appreciated! Jocelyn Harvey

    2. If the property is on registered land then the following will be able to help. You will need to give them as much info as possible and there is a charge depending on what you want them to do. Land Registry of NI Lincoln Buildings Gt Victoria Street Belfast You should be able to find phone number and give them a ring first to ascertain what is needed and what you get for the different costs. I think they can give you the department that can help if unregistered. Hope this is what you needed Pam UK

Date: Sun, 2 Feb 2003 17:40:29 -0700 From: "Connect Direct" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> My GGrandfather's name was JAMES HANNAH. I have his marriage certificate giving his parents as JAMES HANNAH & ANN LAUGHRY and his birth as DOWN. I then have his Death Certificate giving his birth as DERRY. He would have been born c1840 and married & died in Ballarat Vic. I have full info on his children etc. just have not been able to find how & when he entered the country and confirm his parents details. An elderly lady (his grandaughter) recalls her father - his son - telling her he was born in NEWTON LIMVARDY LONDONDERRY and that he and his brothers went from Ireland to California for the Gold Rush, later leaving and coming to New Zealand then Australia, again looking for Gold. She said he was the only one to remain in Australia but kept in contact with a brother in New Zealand. I have now found there was a Robert Hannah -a goldminer in New Zealand and also a William Hannah that owned a Hotel during the Gold Rush days. I am trying to attach some one in New Zealand or California to my troublesome James. I have tried the IGI and can find no listing for this family in either Derry or Down and nothing for the parents names. Have also listed on message boards and mailing lists - nothing! Any suggestions anyone as I am getting desperate now? Donna Queensland Australia

    3. Hi Joan Thanks for trying. I have run across in a few case that the name on record was not the person's first name, but rather their baptismal name. Some one said that Marguerite last name was Moffet, but this doesn't make since to me. Since Behan is what they call the real Irish or black Irish and Moffet is a Scotch Irish name. 3. Hello Lorraine I saw your post to the list and I see you're searching the Murphy family from Ireland. I am wondering if your Elizabeth had a brother John Murphy. I am not sure when My Murphy's came to England, John married Mary Welsh in Bradford 1859 they were both aged 20 yrs., all of their children were born in Goole Yorkshire, their daughter Julia was my grandmother she married Thomas Gibbons, the Gibbons family also came from Ireland. I would love to hear from you if our families are linked. 1. [IRL~ROOTS] if you're checking family names
    2. LEWIS PATRICIA C.
    3. If you are checking your family names as possibly living in England by 1901-don't forget to check the 1881and 1891 Brit. census for family then, too! By going to the Family History Center ( run by the Latter Day Saints). I not only found that my family lived in Middlesex ( Harlington & W. Drayton) in 1881, but was able to check for 1871, 1861 and 1851. The following is basically for "newbies" to genealogy. The 1881 census is indexed and threfore many people easily found IF they are there at that time. But remember that ages are not always true. Each census and bit of information for my Gfather has him as born in different years brom 1863 thru 1867, depending on what I have as info for him. He is listed as being 18 yrs. old on several things in different years, ( either he didn't age-he lied-or census counter couldn't subtract). Check as much of census as you can for all the family names especailly "common" names, Maloney/Mahoney ( oftern taken for each other) O'Brien etc. And don't worry/fuss about the spelling I found family of Herricks listed as Horrocks. And after many years had finally found the right ones-before that I was insistent about the spelling. I was lucky that there was a son with an odd name, and that's was how they were found. After 40 years ( I've been at it) you still can learn more tricks. Good luck to all of you!
