Does anyone on the list have a suggestion as to which Rootsweb list is best for researching Ulster genealogy? According to Rootsweb, there is no individual list exclusively for this province. Is there a Scotch-Irish list which would possibly cover this? Thanks, Margery Borger Sacramento, CA
Most people who wished to have full participation in their new homeland, file(ed) for an "Intent to Naturalize" form, which gave information about them, where born, when, all members of family who accompanied them,, wife & children - with same information. A residency period was established at 5 years, and this is still in effect, but intent was filed earlier. I don't know when we started having Naturalization ceremonies as we do now, when the people have completed learning the Consitutution, Bill of Rights, etc. In early County Court records after the Revolutionary War, it is not uncommon for a man's request to give up his allegience to his former country and swear allegiance to America. My Grandfather filed in the Superior Court, in Erie Co., NY, in Nov. 1922, and was accepted in March 1928. These are documents issued by the U.S. Department of Labor, Naturalization Services. You might be able to pull up a web site for your county that would give you the needed information. Duplicates of ALL are filed in Washington at citedlocation. I have found entries for an individual in the early 1800's in the Co. of my residence in TN, which simply stated that the man was from - Ireland, or wherever, and swears to give up fidelity for his former homeland and swears allegience to this country. I really need help! My great grandmother, Mary MURPHY was born c 1827 in Ireland, according to the 1861, 1871, and 1881 Ontario Canada censuses. She married Bryan KILLEN someplace in Canada. He was born in Canada, date and place unknown. They had three children, MATTHEW b. 1852; JAMES b. 1855; MARGARET b. 1858. All born in Merritton (St. Catharines) Lincoln County, Ontario and baptized R.C. at the cathedral in St. Catharines. Any records I can find state Mary was born in Ireland, that's it -- no other information. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I should start my search? It appears she had no parents or siblings in the St. Catharines area. All suggestions welcome!! Mary in Michigan

If your Irish father owns a pub ( in Chicago, Il) named "The Irish Oak" and his son opens a new pub and calls it "The Grafton" would there be any significance to the name? ie: Does the word "Grafton" have a special meaning? I know of Grafton Street in Dublin but I can't think of what Grafton may mean? BTW it is a great pub if you are ever in Chicago. Thanks for your help. Sheila Michigan, USA
I am posting a question for a person who doesn't have Internet access. She is seeking any information on JAMES CONNELLY, born 14 December 1814 in County Monaghan. He and his wife SARAH HARTS had 10 children. In 1852 they went to Wisconsin, and in 1853 purchased a farm in Richmond, WI. One of their daughters, ANNIE CONNELLY, born 1 October 1854, lived in Winona, Minnesota in 1901. She married either McCloski or McCormack, the family isn't sure. Her sons were Henry-4/10/1882, Edward-22/12/1884, John-11/5/1891. The other daughter, SARAH CONNELLY, born 4 December 1856 married at P.W. Hines/Hynes and lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1901 and Chicago in 1928. Thanks for any help with this family, Paula
Hi there I am researching GEBBIE/WATSON/CROTHERS. I have ROBERT GEBBIE b.1837 Ballyblack married to SARAH ANN WATSON of Ballymagow. I haven't found there marriage yet, but working on it. They had the following children JAMES WATSON GEBBIE who I believe was a baker in Belfast and he married ANNIE McLEAN CROTHERS of Ballycastle in July 1905. Two daughters one called MAY and the other called SADIE, I have not been able to find any thing about these two girls at all. I would be pleased to hear from anyone who can help me. Is there such a thing as a 'guild' for bakers, who can I find out about James Watson Gebbie as a baker. It would be good to hear from anyone researching these names. Beryl
