    1. MALLON Help needed
    2. Erin Mallon
    3. Hello all, I have come to a dead end. I am looking for a MORRIS H MALLON born (somewhere) in Ireland in approx 1860. I don't know if he was in the north or south. He is listed in the English census in 1901 as being an author/ journalist. Morris was married to Frances Mary Conway, they had 5 kids with twins Edwin Hereman Mallon & Edwina Kathleen Mallon. I have married in to the Mallon family, and years ago noticed a funny coincidence that, every generation there was either a MARY MALLON , or a _____ Mary Mallon. Tonight while watching SBS about TYPHOID Mary (also MARY MALLON), I began to wonder if she was also in this line of Mallons. She was born approx 1869 in Ireland. The actress playing her part seemed to have a northern accent, and I noticed on one site that there were a large # of Mallon's in the north. I do believe that they were Catholic, but who knows. I am going to Ireland next year to search a bit, but really have no idea where to start. If anyone has any ideas or contacts, it would be greatly appreciated. Take Care Erin Mallon

    1. Re: FW: Re: [Irish-Roots] DNA
    2. In a message dated 4/13/2005 12:58:03 PM Eastern Daylight Time, swanjane@hotmail.com writes: Every body cell contains 46 chromosomes arranged in 23 pairs, except for mature red blood cells which lose their chromosomes when maturing and the eggs and sperm which both contain half the usual amount ie 23 chromosomes not 46. In the cells with 23 pairs one of each pair comes from the mother and one from the father so that the offspring will end up with 23 pairs of chromosomes. The father determines the sex of the baby. The chromosomes of one pair in both men and women are called by their shape. In men that pair is made up of an X and a Y. In women both of the pair are X ie XX. In men the XY split to go in the sperm so half the sperm are X and half the sperm are Y. In women the XX split so 1 is in each egg, so all the eggs are X. If a womans X + Mans X = XX girl baby a womans X + Mans Y = XY boy baby I hope this helps OK....it's still greek (or is it geek?) to me. So I under stand the XX and the XY theory. I blame all my husband's son's and brother's bad habit on their Y chromosome. But WHY is it, I can't be DNA tested to follow the male line? Or is this another "male myth" so we'll have to keep talking to them? LECTURE WARNING - Pompous know it all butting in! Now, I'm butting in and I know it but since "Roots" Irish or otherwise only come from our family, please folks, don't let too much more time go by without reconstructing at least some of those bridges that seem to have been burned, (based on the posts this last week about who's not talking to whom). Both of my parents are now gone and so is one brother. Believe me, if I could go back in time, I'd re-write the years we all spent fighting/not speaking/ and complaining about each other. Fortunately, I got the chance to "kiss & makeup" before my mother died. And Dad and I always got along. But I still wake up in the middle of the night, wishing I'd done more, been more involved and been more responsive to the brother who died too young and we were both too self-concerned to realize how little time we really had left. 4 years ago, my lovely sister-in-law ditched the family and our baby shower for something else and the next day she had a massive coronary and was gone before the ambulence got to the house. 49 years old. No time for apologies or for goodbyes. So you don't have to get all mushy and sentimental but think seriously about making one phone call (OK, it can be from a pay phone) and saying, "Hey Dad (Mom, Sis,etc. etc) I know we've had our differences, but I just wanted to check in and let you know I'm still alive and to see how you're doing." And do it every 6 months and it won't hurt. It'll hurt more if you find out they died and you didn't. LECTURE OVER! Now seriously, someone please example in words of one syllable, why no one wants to/is capable of paternal DNA testing on women.
