    1. Re: [Irish-Roots] Byrne
    2. Janine H
    3. Hello, I have come upon a brick wall with an ancestor and hope SKS will be able to apply a sledgehammer. Catherine Byrne was born in County Kildare C1820. At the age of 19 after stealing some bed clothes, she was convicted at a trial held in Dublin on 3rd June 1839. She was sentenced to 7 years transportation to Australia. I have been through all the transportation records to see if I can find a town of origin, with no luck - this has become my brick wall. Is it possible someone may be able to find her in the census records?. She married William Reed (another convict) in Australian in 1841 and then between child Number 10 and 11, she changed her name to Sarah Reed (nee Kennedy) I suspect it was around the time when the government introduced registrations of births (possibly to ensure the stigma of being a convict didn't follow her in the records ?) She was still married to William Reed and children born after that date had Sarah Reed (nee Kennedy) as the mother on the records. She died as Sarah Reed.. This begs the question as to whether her parents John Kennedy and Mary McDonald as stated on her death certficate are really John BYRNE and Mary McDonald. I wondered did she just alter her dad's name in keeping with the change of her name or are ALL the names ficticious??. I've tried to find using both sets of names with no luck. And so I open my dilemma to those knowledgeable in this area in the hope that this can be resolved. I have been unable to go back any further as I have no indication of any siblings. Perhaps if I list her childrens' names, these could be also family names. They are: William, Edward, George, Mary, Joseph, Catherine, Maria, Charles, Sarah, James, Henry and John. Any help will be very much appreciated. Cheers Janine South Australia.

    1. MULHOLLAND DOHERTY 1825 > IRELAND NEW YORK PHILADELPHIA
    2. Dave and Cathy Mulholland
    3. Dear Irish ancestors, Looking for any information on a George Mulholland who was born in 1825 in Ireland. Presumably came to the US via Liverpool to New York and later resided in Phildelphia. It is believed he left on the Cambridge Ship in 1845 at the age of 20. His family in Philadelphia includes his wife Isabel(Isabella) Doherty born in 1825) and their 6 children: John, Andrew, George, Mary Ann, James Edward and Joseph - all children were born between the years of 1847 to 1859 respectively in Philadelphia. George worked for the US Mint, however, it is also believed George enlisted in the Civil War in 1861 as the records show that Isabella became a widow around 1863. I am feverishly searching for George's naturalization records, however, if anyone has any information/tips/clues they can provide me regarding where in Ireland George may have come from would be appreciated. I am hoping there are some other Mulhollands out there who are looking for some missing links to this Mulholland family. Over the years, such requests have turned up some miraculous discoveries on other family lines. Other lineage surnames in this Mulholland line include Scully, Steel, Stone. The first name of Winbert shows up quite a few times in this Mulholland line. I have much information to share once George and Isabel arrived to the US that I would be more than happy to share. Thank you, Cathy

I have no idea where he was born but his niece Margaret WATTS daughter of Sara Ann (GREEN) and Elijah WATTS was born in Crumlin in 1871 so ther e may be a slim chance the GREEN family came from that area. 1. Re: [Irish-Roots] Re: money exchange
    2. We are in the Republic at least twice a year visiting family. We no longer use traveler checks and have never had some USA dollars exchanged in advance of our trip. It is just too expensive with the rate and inflation changing on a daily basis. We use our debit card at ATMs throughout the country and one can use their credit card at ATMs too for pocket money. You receive the rate of that particular day. If you MUST exchange a traveler check go to the Bank of Ireland or another bank to do your exchange, not one of those money exchange places. Never go to your local/personal bank to get money in advance. It is expensive. Airports in Ireland have branches of their local banks to get you currency or go to the ATM in the airport. Whenever possible use your debit card or credit card for purchasing articles, paying for meals or accommodations. You will be assured of the rate for that day. Always ask for a VAT receipt for your purchases if you are charged VAT. The night before departing fill in all the receipts and go to the correct window to get your refund. Some companies will only credit it to your card and others will give you a choice and a choice of currency. Don't muddle around at the airport with your receipts, be prepared. Always ask at the store for a VAT receipt because clerks do not automatically give them to you. I ask, no matter how small the purchase, and sort it out the night before leaving. If unsure, the refund company will assist you at the airport. Mary Ellen Chamber Lakewood, OH _Maryln61@sbcglobal.net_ (mailto:Maryln61@sbcglobal.net)

    1. Re: money exchange
    2. Albert D
    3. - Perhaps some people about to travel would benefit from this. I hate to pay all the charges to exchange money overseas. A few weeks ago, my husband happened to casually asked a teller at our bank if he knew where we could get a god exchange rate. The teller told him that the bank would get Euros for us (and other currency) at no charge, no fees, no catch. Just a straight switch of dollars to euros. I almost fell over my own feet getting there with my dollars! They said it would take about 2 weeks, but it came in 3 days time. You have to have over $100.00 worth to exchange, but at the way the prices are in Ireland nowadays, that was no problem. It's worth a call to your bank to save all the extra money you would have to spend on another kind of exchange. Hope this saves a few people some dollars, so they can buy a pint of Guinness or two. Note: The records, where they mention a County in Ireland, means the parents stayed in Ireland or were deceased in Ireland and their sons and daughters came to Montreal, where the marriages took place. 1. Question
    2. Hello: My great great grandfather immigrated from Ireland in 1848-1849. I have recently found out that he immigrated from what I think would now be the Belfast Area. My question is: I am looking for records of his parents, where he was born and exactly when he came across the pond. I know in England they have records going back to the beginning of time (well almost) and I am wondering if the same applies for Ireland. His name was William Hollis born 12-22-1829. His father's name was Mathew (according to the death certificate of William Hollis). William appears in the 1860 census in Lewistown, Mifflin County, PA. He died in 1907. I know of no other Hollis's' that he was related to in the USA. All of the relatives that might have information are now deceased. Does anyone have any suggestions? I look at the Hollis rootsweb list, but that is not any help. Thanks, ginger in Florida

    3. We have a Irish Tombstone list, cemetery and Obits list where this sort of question may receive results Ellen, but of course it will depend upon where or what you may like found for you. I would suggest that the best way to make contact with someone in any of these areas would be to join the rootsweb list for the relevant county that you are seeking and make your request on that list I really dont know of a RAOK list for Ireland, I doubt if one exists.
